- Why PACKER was started:
- -----------------------
-
- Packer was originally started when Kenneth Wall switched to RemoteAccess
- to control the deleting of the message base. Packer has since grown
- into a full message base utility giving control to all users of the
- Hudson style message base. Now I have taken over the Packer project,
- with lots of new changes. But a special thanks still goes out to
- KENNETH WALL for getting all this started.
-
-

-
- PACKER MUST NEVER BE RUN WHILE ANYONE IS ON THE BBS
- OR WHILE YOU ARE EDITING MESSAGES.

-
- [ PACKER.DOC vs 3.40 ] page 1
-
-
-
-
-
- What is PACKER:
- ---------------
-
- PACKER is a Hudson Message Base Packing Program that will read a
- defined control file and the message base to determine what form
- or if any packing should be done. Note: Packer will pack the message
- base without any additional files, but this is not the prefered method
- of packing. Current BBS Programs that Use the Hudson Message Base
- and Packer will function with: Quickbbs, RemoteAccess, SupperBBS,
- MajikBoard, BostonBBS & anyone else who I may have forgot, that
- uses the Hudson Style of Message base.
-
-
-
- What are the PACK UTILITIES:
- ----------------------------
-
- PACK UTILITES are small programs that were written to better support the
- Packing control files for PACKER. You will be able to input the required
- information, and determine just how PACKER will treat your particular
- Hudson Style Message Base. Please read thru these doc's for more
- information on these utility programs.
-
- PACK-RA is a small utility provided for the RemoteAccess sysop that
- reads the message base information in your Messages.RA file and puts the
- message base data into Packer2.Dat. This way you will not have to enter
- in all the info concerning each individual message base area.
-
- PACK-QBB is a similar utility to PACK-RA, except it reads the info from
- a Quickbbs MsgCfg.Dat file instead of a RemoteAccess file. This util
- also creates the Packer2.Dat file that PACK-SYS and PACKER will use.
-
- PACK-SYS is a small utility provided for the sysop to enter the Key
- information that is needed by PACKER. This information is required
- to process your registration key. In PACK-SYS you also enter the path
- to your message base files, and the kind of logging you would like.
-
- PACK-MSG is a utility to input the packing information that is used by
- PACKER to address items like: Days Old, Days to Keep, Number of
- Messages to Keep. This utility will be used by Quickbbs 2.66 and
- previous versions or SuperBBS users.
-
-
- ShareWare Concept:
- ------------------
-
- Well everyone says they will not try out a program that doesn't let them
- test it first without delays. So I have decided to take a step back in
- ShareWare, by not having any delays, or noises. ShareWare means that you
- have the right to test the product for a period of no more that 30 days.
- At the end of Thirty (30) days you must either stop using the product or
- Register your copy. It's that simple, and hopefully people will register!
- Registrations lead to more programmers turning to the ShareWare concept.
-
-
- [ PACKER.DOC vs 3.40 ] page 2
-
-
-
-
-
- All of you by now know that most people do not beleive in ShareWare.
- Because of this, most programmers have gone to great lengths to try and
- get the users of their product to register. Because of the nature of this
- please just register this program. That is a simple request.
-
-
- * Packer Must be run in Your Quickbbs, RA or SBBS Directory.
-
-
-
- This Package contains:
- ----------------------
-
- PACKER.EXE: Exe Program used for all options.
- PACKER.DOC: This file you are currently reading.
- PACKER.REG: Registration form for Packer.
- PACK-SYS.EXE: The conversion program to create the "SYSPACK.DAT"
- PACK-MSG.EXE: The conversion program to create the "PACKER2.DAT"
- BETASITE.TXT: List of current Packer beta sites and thank you's.
- PACK-RA.EXE: Util to update PACKER2.DAT file from RemoteAccess
- PACK-QBB.EXE: Util to update PACKER2.DAT file from QuickBBS
- PCONVERT.EXE: Util to change "SYSPACK.DAT" into "PACKINFO.DAT".
-
- Now for the begging:
- --------------------
-
- PACKER is Copyrighted by Peter Kling, who maintains sole ownership of
- all unregistered copies. PACKER has been released as a ShareWare version.
- ShareWare means that you are legally allowed to use PACKER for an
- evaluation period of 30 days (and no longer please.) After that time you
- must register your copy or Stop using it. You are free to distribute
- PACKER as long as you do not delete or add anything to the original archive.
- When you discover how easy PACKER is to use, you will want to register it.
- After many weeks of programming it would be great to get rewarded for my
- efforts. The number of hours spent writting, updating, and debuging; not
- to mention beta testing, should be worth a whole lot more. Please send
- your Registration of only $20.00 to the address below:

-
- Getting ready for PACK UTILITIES:
- ---------------------------------
-
- For QBBS 2.66/earlier versions and SBBS Sysops:
- Print out a copy of your Areas.BBS file. This file is the list of all
- Message Boards on your system. Additionally you will need to enter
- your paths and system title.
-
-
-
- 1) Your Name
- 2) The System Name
- 3) FidoNet Number
- 4) Phone Number
- 5) Message Path
-
- and these individual items
-
- 6) Message Board Name.
- 7) Days to Keep Old Messages.
- 8) Days to Keep Received Messages.
- 9) Number of Messages to Keep.
-
-
- These questions are for each message area. With the use of PACK-SYS you
- can now keep your messages by all of these specifications. No longer do
- you just have to keep a maximum or minimum amount of Messages in your
- message base.
-
-
- HOW TO USE PACK-SYS:
- --------------------
-
- PACK-SYS.EXE is really sort of self explanatory. After the introduction
- screen you will be presented with a menu of obtions.
-

-
-
- Notes in General
- ----------------
-
-
- * PACKER is fast.
-
- * PACKER will handle an unlimited number of messages.
- (limited only by Pascal)
-
- * PACKER repairs the lastread.bbs file on every run.
-
- * One of the last things PACKER does is erase the original message
- base files, so you're safe if the computer resets up until that
- point which lasts only 3 secs.
- (As long as you're not using the write in place mode (-w switch).)
-
- * PACKER will first check to see if there is more than 20k free on
- the HardDrive, if not PACKER will abort.
-
- * When ran, PACKER will check to see if there is enough disk space to
- create a new copy of the message base. If not it will switch to
- the write in place mode.
-
- * PACKER now has better error trapping! If an error is detected and the
- log option is used the the error will be written to the log file.
- If the log option is not used PACKER will create and write to a file
- named PACK_ERR.LOG.
-
- * PACKER maps out the msgtxt file before that file is packed, this
- will stop the crosslinks that pop up when first used by new Sysops!
- This also gives the power for PACKER to pack message bases sorted
- by other utilities.
-
- * PACKER now writes to a choice of three different Log formats.
- RemoteAccess (RA.LOG), Quickbbs (SYSTEM.LOG) or Packer.log
-
-
-

-
- PACKER MUST NEVER BE RUN WHILE ANYONE IS ON THE BBS

- TECH NOTE:
- ----------
-
-
- PACKER will not run :msghdr.bbs, msginfo.bbs, msgtoidx.bbs
- unless these files :msgidx.bbs, msgtxt.bbs, lastread.bbs,
- are present in :SYSPACK.DAT, PACKER2.DAT
- the same directory.
-
-
- Packer requires about 260k ram.

- Common Errors & Complaints
- --------------------------
-
- USER: MY KEY DOESN'T WORK.
-
- Answer: You may have to change one tiny piece of information in the
- PACK-SYS after you have mailed in you registration.
-
-
- USER: I GET A ERROR AT STARTUP FROM PACKER OF "FILE NOT FOUND".
-
- Answer: Either load the path statements into PACK-SYS. Or move PACKER
- to the Husdon Message Base directory...
- Note: If you are using a separate message base directory, you must
- use the path statement, and keep PACKER in the directory
- with the User files.
-
-
- USER: I'VE GOT ALL THE COMMANDLINE SWITCHES SET AND STILL I GET AN ERROR.
-
- Answer: Remove the -I for re-index which is only used when reindexing
- the message base.
-
-
- USER: I USED THE PACKER OPTION FOR -I REINDEX AND IT DOESN'T REINDEX.
-
- Answer: Add the -P with the -I command. (IE: Packer -P -I)

-
- UpDates:
- --------
-
-
- -Version 1.1
- Fixed minor bugs.
- PACKER would leave msgtxt.tmp on the drive, if there were no
- messages to pack. Fixed write in place mode so that it would be a
- lot faster. Added error trapping: PACKER writes a file called
- errors.log, which now writes the reason for the error. If the
- error was a diskfull error PACKER will delete its temp files before
- exiting. Added a few extra messages on screen during run-time for
- clarity on use.
-
-
- -Version 1.2
-
- Minor wording improvments:
- Added wording to error messages instead of just code.
- Changed wording on run-time screen.
-
-
-
- -Version 1.3
-
- Bug Fix:
- Packer would change the msgto field to * Received * in public
- message areas when the message was received, this should only happen
- in private areas. Problem fixed.
-
-
- -Version 1.4
-
- Added switch:
- Added the -c switch for users of the Message.ra within different
- directory other than the one that contains RemoteAccess.
-
-

- Code and Switch Added:
- Changed some code to use Julian dates (Much Better!)
- Added the -rt switch for ReTearing EchoMail.
- Improved speed of overal program (including write in place mode.)
- Fixed many bugs dealing with Packer's packing procedures.
- Message bases that were not renumbered before.
-
-
- -Version 1.51
-
- Bug found with extended messages of greater than 25k.
-
