  7. NOTICE TO SYSOPS:  If you currently run OMK and wish to make this reader
  8. available to your users, RENAME OMKRD201.ZIP to OMK_READ.ZIP and place
  9. it in your OMK upload/download directory.  In other words, replace the
  10. current OMK_READ.ZIP with the OMKRD201.ZIP -- you need to rename it in
  11. order for it to show on the FILES.BBS.

  15. Quick start:
  16.  
  17. Just unzip this file into your current reader directory, if you are
  18. already using OMKREAD.  Make a backup copy of everything in that
  19. directory just in case!!!  Then call OMKREAD without -r on the command
  20. line if you have messages waiting to be unbundled.  This will cause the
  21. reader to delete all those little .MSG files when it unbundles.  From
  22. then on you can use -r to retain messages if you wish.  If you do not
  23. have any waiting messages to  unbundle you can call OMKREAD and do
  24. D)elete from the main menu to get rid of the .MSG files.
  25.  
  26. If this is your first time using OMKREAD please read the manual!!!  The
  27. quick start is to create a directory for OMKREAD and unzip the file, or
  28. copy it into that directory.  Do a CD to that directory and call the
  29. program...it will step you through the install process.  I STRONGLY URGE
  30. YOU TO READ THE DOC FILE FIRST!!  You'll need to make sure of such
  31. things as the directory(s) where your inbound messages and outbound
  32. replies are to be placed, which archive program you'll use for OLD
  33. versions of OMK (if any), and that PKZIP/PKUNZIP is either in your path
  34. or in the same directory as OMKREAD.

  37. Revisions for version 2.01 -- 12/19/1991
  38.  
  39.         o       Added QWK capability to reader.  This is tranparent to
  40.                 the end user.  You use OMK as you would any other QWK
  41.                 reader - downloading messages from the QWK bundler for
  42.                 the BBS you are using, and uploading replies (*.REP) to
  43.                 the same QWK facility on the BBS.  Do NOT upload QWK
  44.                 *.REP files to OMK on a BBS.  YOU CAN STILL USE THIS
  45.                 READER WITH ANY OMK BBS for OMK type bundles and replies
  46.                 the program automatically senses QWK and OMK.  We have
  47.                 tested with many different implementations of QWK and
  48.                 OMK seems to work with all that we've tested.  If you
  49.                 find a version of QWK OMK does NOT work correctly with
  50.                 we would appreciate hearing about it in DETAIL.  As of
  51.                 this version you cannot auto add/drop areas using
  52.                 OMKREAD.  We have discovered that BBS implement the more
  53.                 advanced features differently and need more time to
  54.                 decide HOW we will do this.  For the most part QWK in
  55.                 OMKREAD works exactly like OMK.  You need not be
  56.                 concerned with which type of BBS you are using.  OMKREAD
  57.                 will handle those details.

  59.                 MATRIX mail is not available in QWK.

  62.         o       SCROLLING added - you can now use the up and down arrows
  63.                 as well as the PGUP and PGDN keys to scroll through your
  64.                 messages.  The return key functions like page down until
  65.                 the last screen is displayed and then bring back the
  66.                 menu.

  68.         o       NO MORE LITTLE FILES -- this version of OMKREAD abandons
  69.                 Opus way of storing messages as one file per message.
  70.                 Instead messages are now stored in a file called
  71.                 MESSAGES.DAT for each area, with each area being in a
  72.                 separate directory.  There is also an MESSAGES.NDX for
  73.                 each message area.  This makes for more efficient use of
  74.                 disk space and faster searching and bundling/unbundling
  75.                 of messages.  While the inbound messages and outbound
  76.                 replies for OMK and QWK type messages are totally
  77.                 different the messages stored in your reader are exaxtly
  78.                 the same format for each type.

  80.         o       We now use Ralf Brown's SPAWNO library to conserve
  81.                 memory use when shelling to DOS or when running other
  82.                 programs.  This assures you that if you have enough
  83.                 memory to run OMK you will not run out of memory when
  84.                 shelling to PKZIP to zip or unzip your messages.  You
  85.                 should also be able to use almost any editor with the
  86.                 extra memory made available by SPAWNO.  SPAWNO copies
  87.                 OMK to EMS, XMS, or disk depending upon what is
  88.                 available.  If is is swaping to disk you may notice a
  89.                 delay.

  92. OMK 1.18 ** Old version....

  96. COMMAND LINE OPTION -r = placing this option on your command line will
  97.                          cause OMKREAD to retain your messages.  It will
  98.                          no longer delete old messages when unbundling
  99.                          a new packet.
  100.  
  101.                          Because of this new feature OMK handles your
  102.                          messages and message directories a little
  103.                          differently - a change you may notice.  When
  104.                          OMK begins to unbundle messages for an
  105.                          exisiting BBS on your reader -- it marks ALL
  106.                          the existing message areas with a special flag.
  107.                          If the reader either unpacks messages for that
  108.                          existing area, or senses that you still have
  109.                          that area selected on the BBS even though there
  110.                          may have been no message, the area and messages
  111.                          are retained.  If AFTER all the messages for
  112.                          that BBS have been tossed, and an area with
  113.                          that special flag exists the reader knows that
  114.                          you no longer have that area selected on the
  115.                          BBS.

  117.                          To avoid having messages from some new area (at
  118.                          some future time) tossed into that area OMK
  119.                          deletes the messages in this unused area and
  120.                          then deletes the directory.
  121.  
  122.                          You may notice that you see the "Creating Area"
  123.                          message more often than you did with the old
  124.                          version.  That is due to the above feature and
  125.                          is normal.
  126.  
  127. PKZIP                    OMK now uses PKZIP as its default archiver.
  128.                          You will still need either ARC/PKARC/PKPAK for
  129.                          BBSes using the old version of OMK.  Version
  130.                          1.18 will automatically detect which version of
  131.                          OMK messages it is packing/unpacking.
  132.  
  133.                          NOTICE -- the file exetensions have changed.
  134.                          Instead of .OKO and REP the extension for
  135.                          messages and replies for version 1.18 are, OKZ
  136.                          and REZ.  If you are using scripts in uploading
  137.                          and downloading messages you should REMEMBER TO
  138.                          CHANGE THE EXTENSIONS in your scripts.

  140. MATRIX MAIL              If your sysop has allowed access to Net Mail
  141.                          you should be aware that you may REPLY to a
  142.                          message.  If you attempt to W)rite a message
  143.                          you will be permitted to do so, but you will
  144.                          NOT be allowed to specify a NET/NODE number.
  145.                          That message will only be sent to the host BBS.
  146.                          It will be up to the Sysop to determine if
  147.                          she/he will forward it to your desired
  148.                          destination.
  149.  
  150.                          NET MAIL IS A PRIVILEGE RARELY GRANTED TO
  151.                          NON-SYSOPS!!  If you are fortunate enough to be
  152.                          given such access DO NOT ABUSE IT!!!  Long
  153.                          distance calls cost your sysop Money.  You
  154.                          should probably consider offering to send
  155.                          financial assistance to your sysop if you are
  156.                          granted NET MAIL access.
  157.  
  158. APPENDING EXPORTS        If you specify and existing file name on an
  159.                          Xport OMK will append the message you are
  160.                          exporting to that file.  If the file does not
  161.                          exist OMK will create it.  This will allow you
  162.                          to have a file of messages in text for grouped
  163.                          in some order you determine.  For instance, I
  164.                          keep a text file call CECHO.TXT that has
  165.                          messages I've saved from the C_ECHO.  I can
  166.                          then do a text search on that file for subjects
  167.                          I want/need to refer to.
  168.  
  169. READER MENUS             You should notice a difference in the way the
  170.                          reader's menus operate.  Now all the menu
  171.                          options, except Next and Prior on the main
  172.                          message reading screen, will return the menu to
  173.                          Next when finished.  Next and Prior are
  174.                          'sticky' and will remain selected until you
  175.                          change them.

  181. sysop if she/he would carry the OMKIT echo.  It will allow you to
