  19.             This FSC is being distributed to members of the FidoNet(r)
  20.             community in order to solicit their reactions to the
  21.             proposals contained in it.  While the issues discussed may
  22.             not be directly relevant to the problems of FidoNet,  they
  23.             may be interesting to implementers.  Distribution is
  24.             unlimited.

  30.          0.0) A QUICK INTRODUCTION AND STATEMENT OF INTENT
  31.  
  32.          The request for a gateway between WWIVnet and FidoNet through
  33.          a program called  NetSEX was sent in  to Randy Bush (1:105/6)
  34.          approximately a  month ago. During that  time there have been
  35.          many questions pertaining to NetSEX  that I feel are relevent
  36.          to the proposed gateway between WWIVnet and FidoNet.
  37.  
  38.          The major questions that I feel needs to be dealt with are:
  39.  
  40.             Will it  be possible for  WWIV Technology Networks  to use
  41.             the  NetSEX gateway,  and if  so: will  a seperate gateway
  42.             agreement be necessary?
  43.  
  44.             Will  it  be  possibile  for  WWIV  BBSes  that are not in
  45.             WWIVnet  or  WWIV  Technology  Networks  to  use NetSEX to
  46.             interface their BBS with FidoNet?
  47.  
  48.          The  current gateway  proposal that  I have  sent in pertains
  49.          only to WWIVnet and FidoNet. What  I would like to do is have
  50.          that policy  be between FidoNet  and a "NetSEX-Project"  that
  51.          will keep  a list of  who's using NetSEX,  what their FidoNet
  52.          address is, what their  WWIV Technology Network addresses are
  53.          (for the NetSEX node and BBS  node), and if they gateway to a
  54.          WWIV Technology Network: which one.
  55.  
  56.          To support  my reasoning I  will discuss each  question a bit
  57.          and explain my proposal.
  58.  
  59.          1.0) WILL IT BE POSSIBLE  FOR WWIV TECHNOLOGY NETWORKS TO USE
  60.          THE  NetSEX  GATEWAY,  AND  IF  SO:  WILL  A SEPERATE GATEWAY
  61.          AGREEMENT BE NECESSARY?
  62.  
  63.          There have been several proposed-alternatives to WWIVnet that
  64.          be  WWIV  Technology  Networks.  Various  planners from these
  65.          networks have asked whether or not  they would be able to use
  66.          NetSEX  to   gateway  between  FidoNet   and  their  proposed
  67.          networks, and if so what steps would need to be taken.
  68.  
  69.          These proposed networks would be using BBSLIST.NET (a list of
  70.          all nodes in the network,  similar to FidoNet's NODELIST) and
  71.          CONNECT.NET (a  listing of all nodes  in the BBSLIST.NET file
  72.          and how they  connect to one another-- a  topology map) files
  73.          that are  independent of WWIVnet.  They would be  using their
  74.          own nodenumbering schemes (however still be restricted to the
  75.          65k maximum).

  77.          There were  various possible things  offered by these  people
  78.          that would possily work, but in  the end my response has been
  79.          that the current proposed  policy between WWIVnet and FidoNet
  80.          is between  those two networks,  and if they  were to gateway
  81.          between their non-WWIVnet WWIV Technology Networks they would
  82.          need to approach the FTSC for an agreement.

  85.          1.1) WILL THERE BE ANY  POSSIBILITIES FOR WWIV BBSes THAT ARE
  86.          NOT IN WWIVnet  OR WWIV TECHNOLOGY NETWORKS TO  USE NetSEX TO
  87.          INTERFACE THEIR BBS WITH FidoNet?
  88.  
  89.          There  are   several  WWIV  BBSes  that   are  interested  in
  90.          connecting  with FidoNet  but are  not interested  in joining
  91.          WWIVnet (which  is the only network  currently operating with
  92.          WWIV Technology).  Of the several people  who have asked, all
  93.          of them are  running FourDog but would like  to get the speed
  94.          of NetSEX  and the correct placing  of Netmail into mailboxes
  95.          as opposed to the method FourDog uses.
  96.  
  97.          It is possible to run NetSEX on a non-WWIVnet BBS by creating
  98.          the  data files  for a  WWIV Technology  Network that contain
  99.          their  NetSEX  node  and  their  "WWIVnet"  node.  They would
  100.          essentially be  faking out the software  by running a network
  101.          consisting of two nodes.

  103.          This  question I  have  been  unable to  sufficiently answer.
  104.          While this situation would  involve someone that only belongs
  105.          to  FidoNet, it  would still  be using  software designed  to
  106.          gateway and it would be gatewaying messages from FidoNet to a
  107.          WWIV Technology Network that consisted of one node.

  110.          2.0) MY PROPOSED AGREEMENT
  111.  
  112.          What I  would like to do  is provide all sides  with the best
  113.          possible solution that will privide  all sides with that same
  114.          solution. As  it stands now, the  proposed gateway is between
  115.          FidoNet  and WWIVnet.  What I  would rather  see is  a policy
  116.          between  FidoNet and  an entity  called "The  NetSEX Project"
  117.          that  would  keep  track  of  where  NetSEX  is being used to
  118.          interface and/or  gateway with FidoNet. To  be more specific,
  119.          and entity that would do the following:
  120.  
  121.             a) keep  track of all WWIV-BBSes  running NetSEX simply to
  122.                interface with FidoNet. These would be systems that are
  123.                not in WWIVnet or any  other WWIV Technology Network. A
  124.                listing of their FidoNet  address, node number used for
  125.                the BBS,  and node number  used for the  NetSEX address
  126.                would be kept.

  128.             b) keep  track of all  WWIV-BBses running NetSEX  that are
  129.                connected to  a WWIV Technology  Network. A listing  of
  130.                their FidoNet address, the  name of the WWIV Technology
  131.                Network they  belong to, what  address they use  in the
  132.                WWIV Technology  Network, and the  address in the  WWIV
  133.                Technology Network they are using for their NetSEX node
  134.                would be kept.
  135.  
  136.             c) do monthly or bi-monthly  tests of all NetSEX nodes and
  137.                create a conference (EchoMail for FidoNet, Sub for WWIV
  138.                systems) to support and discuss NetSEX.
  139.  
  140.             d) have  a reserved range  in the WWIV  Technology Network
  141.                for  NetSEX  (and/or  other  gateways)  nodes, and have
  142.                someone in  that network serve as  a liason between the
  143.                "NetSEX Project" and the WWIV Technology Network.

  145.             e) upload all of the files  on one or more FidoNet systems
  146.                where  the various  members of  the FTSC  who work with
  147.                gateways can track down information they may need.
  148.  
  149.          Given   these  actions,   the  following   is  hoped   to  be
  150.          accomplished:
  151.  
  152.             a)  permit  non-WWIV  Technology  Network  systems  to use
  153.                NetSEX  while  being  covered  by  an agreement between
  154.                FidoNet to do so.
  155.  
  156.             b) permit  non-WWIVnet yet still  WWIV Technology Networks
  157.                to  use  NetSEX  while  being  covered  by an agreement
  158.                between FidoNet and the "NetSEX Project" to do so.
  159.  
  160.             c) keep an  index of all systems using  NetSEX, and keep a
  161.                listing of what WWIV Technology Networks are accessable
  162.                through FidoNet.
  163.  
  164.             d)  offer   an  easy-access  place   for  people  to   get
  165.                information  pertaining  to  NetSEX,  FidoNet, and WWIV
  166.                Technology Networks.

  168.          This proposed entity, the "NetSEX Project" would be an entity
  169.          existing  off of  FidoNet. I  offer  to  do all  of the  data
  170.          collection and  send the information to  the people who would
  171.          like it (providing  it is of reasonable cost  phone the phone
  172.          connections).

  174.          There are many benefits, and no drawbacks that I can see.

  177.          3.0) AN END NOTE
  178.  
  179.          I am expecting that  this will be approved, or  even if it is
  180.          it will not be without some form of modification. It seems to
  181.          me  that this  would be  the best  way to  handle the  NetSEX
  182.          gateway  without  spending  a  great  deal  of time approving
  183.          individual networks  that are based  around the same  network
  184.          technology. This proposal was made  from the point of view of
  185.          someone that are working from within FidoNet.
