  4.                  Uniform EchoMail Quoting Style

  9. As more and more new software appears on the network, it has
  10. become evident that we need a universal method for quoting text
  11. of previous messages in replies.
  12.  
  13. Because of the way quoted text must appear, it is necessary to
  14. format said text with "Hard" <CR> characters, in order to keep
  15. the block from drifting should the new text itself be quoted.
  16.  
  17. The following method should allow current and future programs
  18. to properly identify and handle previously quoted material.

  21. Newly quoted text should be preceeded by the a single space,
  22. a greater than symbol ('>') and another space.
  23.  
  24. Optionally a field of initials may appear in front of the
  25. greater than symbol, like this:  " MR> ".  If you allow the
  26. initials to be inserted, they should only be inserted into
  27. lines which have not been previously quoted.  (in other words,
  28. don't add initials to anything already quoted)

  30. Successive quotes of previously quoted material should only add
  31. a single ">" in front of the existing text, which may eliminate
  32. the leading blank space.

  34. Blank lines in quotes should remain blank (no '>' or initials).
  35.  
  36. Kludge lines, including tear lines and origins lines are not
  37. normally quoted, but when they are - they must never be quoted
  38. exactly - this definitely causes problems with other software!
