  15.         ABOUT THIS DOCUMENT
  16.         ===================
  17.         This  is  a  user's  guide to AreaFix.  If  your  echo  feed  has 
  18.         installed  AreaFix on his system and given you a  password,  this 
  19.         tells  you  how  to take advantage of  his  AreaFix  installation 
  20.         remotely.  This  does  not describe how  to  install  AreaFix.  I 
  21.         created this document to allow echomail hubs with AreaFix to pass 
  22.         simple instructions around to their nodes.

  24.         In  order  to  keep things simple, I will refer  the  guy  you're 
  25.         getting  echomail  from who just installed AreaFix,  whomever  he 
  26.         happens to be, as your Hub.
  27.  
  28.         WHAT IS AREAFIX?
  29.         ================
  30.         AreaFix  is a slick program that allows sysops to remotely  alter 
  31.         their  echomail  hubs' distribution files without  bothering  the 
  32.         hubs' sysops. In other words, if I want to pick up a certain echo 
  33.         from my host, and he has AreaFix installed, I just send a special 
  34.         message  and the linking is handled automatically. My  host  does 
  35.         nothing once he is set up.
  36.  
  37.         SETUP
  38.         =====
  39.         This  is  mostly  your Hub's responsibility. He  has  to  install 
  40.         AreaFix on his system and install your password. You should  pick 
  41.         a  password  to  use  in your  AreaFix  messages.  Remember  this 
  42.         password! It may be from 1 to 30 characters long and may  contain 
  43.         any printable characters except spaces.

  45.         TALKING TO AREAFIX
  46.         ==================
  47.         To  invoke AreaFix you must send a netmail message to  your  Hub. 
  48.         The  message  will  be private, addressed  to  AreaFix,  and  the 
  49.         subject will be your password. Case is not important.

  54.         AreaFix  will also allow psuedonyms. Your Hub may have a  special 
  55.         name he wants you to send to instead of "AreaFix". If so, he will 
  56.         tell you. For my examples I will use "AreaFix".

  66.         AREAFIX TALKING TO YOU
  67.         ======================
  68.         Any  time it replies AreaFix will send you a  message  explaining 
  69.         what  action it took (if any) and giving you a list of echos  you 
  70.         are currently receiving. If you are first on your hub's list  for 
  71.         a particular area, AreaFix will put an asterisk next to the  echo 
  72.         name with a note that says you are your hub's feed for that echo.

  74.         TURNING ON ECHOS
  75.         ================
  76.         Turning on an echo is easy. Send a message to AreaFix with a list 
  77.         of  echos you want. Case does not matter. The names may start  in 
  78.         any  column, and you may string them out on a line (separated  by 
  79.         spaces) or put them on separate lines.

  90.         Notice Tom put a tear line at the end of his message. That's  the 
  91.         three  dashes on the line after "mtask". This tells Areafix  that 
  92.         there is no more information for it in this message. If he wants, 
  93.         Tom  may now write comments to his Hub Sysop, or just  notes  for 
  94.         himself. It's a good idea to add this tear line even if you  have 
  95.         nothing  more to say, in case some garbage gets tacked on to  the 
  96.         message during processing.

  131.         a minus sign (-) when you send the message.

  163.         OPTIONS
  164.         =======
  165.         There  are  several useful options available. Each  of  these  is 
  166.         invoked  by  adding  a command to your  subject  line  after  the 
  167.         password. Note that any of these options can be disabled at  your 
  168.         Hub Sysop's discretion.
  169.  
  170.         -R is a rescan command. This causes AreaFix to force a rescan  of 
  171.         the echo area by removing the high-water mark. The next time  the 
  172.         area  is  scanned,  any messages in that area that  you  did  not 
  173.         receive will be packaged up and sent to you.

  175.         -L sends you a list of echo areas. The Hub Sysop may make a  list 
  176.         of available areas in a file; if he has done this, the -L command 
  177.         will cause AreaFix to send it to you.

  188.         -Q  also sends you a list of echo areas. However, unlike  the  -L 
  189.         command, it will scan through the Area Control files to see  what 
  190.         areas  are available and send a list back in a  message.  AreaFix 
  191.         will  put  an  asterisk  (*)  next to  each  area  that  you  are 
  192.         receiving.

  194.         There  is one thing to remember when using these  switches:  they 
  195.         may  not  work  unless there is some text in  your  message.  For 
  196.         example,  the -Q option will not send back a list if you  send  a 
  197.         blank message. However, just having the tear line will be enough.
