-
- 1. Early releases of the "System Operator's Guide to ROS" incorrectly stated
- on page 1 that "DOS version 3.0 or later is required." The statement should
- have been "DOS version 3.3 or later is required."
-
- 2. SAMPLE.DAT contains sample setups for several archive programs, file
- transfer protocols, and doors. These setups should be modified for your
- particular application and installed using ROSSETUP.
-
- 3. The ROSSETUP.EXE program was not properly handling additions/deletions to
- the control file. This has been corrected.
-
- 4. ROS uses several external programs to handle the serial port, perform
- file transfers, process compressed files (archives), and manage the doors:
- The following list are programs that ROS has been tested with and been found
- to be compatible. This list is in no way an endorsement of any particular
- product. All of these files are available from The Albuquerque ROS at (505)
- 299-5974 or from hundreds of other online services and bulletin board
- systems.
-
- FOSSIL drivers:
-
- BNU170.ZIP
- X00V122.ZIP

-
- Doors:
-
- Just about any door that uses DORINFOx.DEF or DOOR.SYS since ROS creates
- both of these files. This includes most doors that are compatible with
- RBBS-PC, QBBS, and many other bulletin board systems.
-
- 5. The following table defines the user flags as they will be shown on the
- Sysop <U>ser <E>dit screen. "1" indicates the flag is set:
-
- Bit Position Name Keys to change from Setup Menu
- 0000000000000000
- | |||||- Shiftlock <S>hiftlock

-
- 1. The user is now given the option of performing an automatic logout after
- a file transfer completes. A ten second timer is displayed after the
- transfer before the logout actually takes place. The user can interrupt
- this timer with an "H" to hangup immediately or any other key to remain
- online.
-
- 2. Minor changes were made to the format of the information displayed before
- a file transfer starts.
-
- 3. The registration procedure in an open system is considerably "friendlier"
- now since the user can make changes to the registration information before
- its filed away. In conjuntion with this change, two screens displayed to
- new users have changed names and two screens have been added. NEWINFO has
- been changed to REGINFO1 and REGISTER has been changed to REGINFO4. REGINFO2
- and REGINFO3 have been added. The screens are displayed at the following
- times:
-
- REGINFO1 The first time a user calls
- REGINFO2 Each subsequent time a user that hasn't registered calls
- REGINFO3 When the system detects missing registation information
- REGINFO4 When the user has successfully complete the registation
-
- Short sample sceens are included in DISPLAY.ZIP.
-
- 4. The ANSI and lower case settings for an unregistered user are now
- correctly maintained from call to call.
-
- 5. Memory requirements for ROS have been reduced by over 40 k-bytes. Many
- doors that formerly required "SWAP" to be on can now be run with it off for
- faster loading and unloading.
-
- 6. ROS now ensures that DOS version 3.3 or later is being used.
-
- 7. ROS now reads the transfer log file instead of the display screen to
- determine the characters per second for the transfer. If you're using DSZ,
- use the environment variable "DSZLOG" to set the file name and use a
- different file for each node, e.g. node one might use "SET
- DSZLOG=DSZ-1.LOG". Note that as of this writing, MPt (formerly Puma) and
- Super8k will both write to the DSZ log file in a compatible format. These
- drivers can also create a seperate log file for each node.
-
- 8. The default lines-per-page for new users has been changed from 23 to 24
- lines.
-
- 9. When adding new users from the <S>ysop <U>ser screen, the default color
- was being set to green on black instead of the color set in ROSSETUP. The
- color for new users added to the system through the normal login/register
- sequence was being set correctly.
-
- 10. The <S>ysop <U>ser screen no longer erases the right column as changes
- are made to fields in the left column. ^K (erase to end-of-line) when
- entered locally, will still do so however.
-
- 11. When Extended Display Codes (EDC) 004, 005, or 006 are used, blank lines
- will no longer be exanded into the field width but will instead be sent to
- the remote system as just a CR/LF pair.
-
- 12. In the "Control" screens of ROSSETUP, F3 now wraps around to the last
- record in a set if there is no previous record. F4 still wraps around to
- the first record if there is no next record.
-
- 13. After <L>oading a message, ROS is now left in edit mode instead of
- automatically saving the message.
-
- 14. The colon (":") after the line number on messages has been eliminated to
- allow the full message line to properly display. Previously, a long (76
- character) line caused an extra blank line to appear.
-
- 15. The editor now consistently renumbers lines after every insertion or
- deletion. Previously, lines were renumbered only after an insertion and
- deleted lines were left as apparent "holes" until the message (or macro) was
- stored away.
-
- 16. A memory allocation bug in the editor was corrected.
-
- 17. A flag is now set when the sysop <V>alidates a user. This flag, the
- second bit from the left in the "Flags" field, can be tested and reset by
- external programs to create lists of newly validated users.
-
- 18. Corrected several display problems in ROSSETUP.
-
- 19. Corrected a bug in the catalog editor. <S>electing a new file name
- would not work correctly until an area had been selected by <A>rea change,
- <F>orward, or <B>ackward.
-
- 20. The name of the file DISPLAY.ZIP has been changed to ROS-SYSM.ZIP to
- better indicate its use.
-
- *21. Message and file areas can now be set to "free" in ROSSETUP. When a
- free message area is entered, ROS will display the message "Time accounting
- suspended" and allow the user to spend as much time as desired in this area.
- When a user tries to download a file from an area marked as free, ROS will
- allow the transfer even if the user does not have sufficient time remaining
- and will display the message "Time accounting suspended" before the transfer
- starts and "Time accounting resumed" after the transfer ends, much like it
- does for uploads.
-
- *22. Message areas, file areas, and doors can now be controlled by age.
- ROSSETUP allows the sysop to enter a lower and upper age limit. If the user
- is younger than the lower limit or older than the upper limit for an area or
- door, no access will be allowed. By default, new entries will be created
- with 0 for the lower limit and 255 for the upper.
-
- * Items 21 and 22 use previously undefined fields in the ROS-CTRL records.
- To set all records to "not free", "0", and "255", run the program SET402.
- Although you will probably only need to run this program once when you
- first install ROS version 4.02, it can be run at any time to reset these
- fields. BUT CAUTION, SET402.EXE SHOULD ONLY BE RUN ON ROS 4.0x FORMAT
- FILES.

-
- 1. Keyword searches on the file catalog are now supported. Using the text
- file "CATALOG" that ROS creates from its catalog data base, users can search
- for just about any keyword or phrase at very high speeds (approximately 500
- k-bytes per second on my test system). To make these searches meaningful
- and timely, you should have ROS build a new catalog daily.
-
- 2. The CATALOG and LEADERS files are now created in the ROS "home" directory
- rather than in LOGIN. While this ensures the CATALOG will be available for
- keyword searches, it does mean that to make them available to users, you
- will have to move these two files explicitly, e.g. during your daily event.
-
- 3. The text file "ROS-CAT.HDR", created by the sysop, replaces the
- automatically inserted system name in the header of the CATALOG file. ROS
- will still insert the creation date. The header file should be placed in
- the ROS "home" directory, i.e. the directory in which ROS will find its
- other data files. The following is an example of this header file:
-
- The Albuquerque ROS
-
- Master File Catalog
-
- This is a complete list of files for The Albuquerque ROS except for
- the PC-SIG Library and the adult file areas. File areas with "$" in
- the header are available only to subscribers.
