  1. PROBLEMS (Q) AND ANSWERS (A) FOR SRE!

  3. Q.  SRE says "Out of time", when the user really isn't.
  4. A.  SRE's time-limit feature is experimental.  If it doesn't work,
  5.     edit SETUP.SR and change the time-limit line to -1.

  7. Q.  SRDOOR doesn't read the door file correctly.
  8. A.  We have tested SRDOOR for DOOR.SYS and DORINFO1.DEF.  If you are
  9.     unable to use these, you may be able to experiment with the formats
  10.     for other BBSes.  Unfortunately, we have not fully tested the other
  11.     BBS formats.  If you have any information about the door file
  12.     produced by your BBS, please send us a letter!

  14. Q.  SRDOOR makes a "Run-Time Error".
  15. A.  We are working on this.  We lost the source to SRDOOR in a hard
  16.     drive crash, so we have to reconstruct it.  SRDOOR is reading
  17.     a 38400 baud rate in the door file.  We don't currently have a good
  18.     solution for this.  If you have the PC-Magazine "CHANGE" utility,
  19.     you can change the 38400 to 19200, and then run SRLOCK.  Sorry!

  21. Q.  I get an error message about running SRDOOR!
  22. A.  Run SRINSTAL to install the correct BBS type for your system.

  24. Q.  SRE doesn't read the ANSI status of the user.
  25. A.  SRE currently ignores the ANSI status, even though it's in the door
  26.     file, so that users can play black and white if they'd like.

  28. Q.  I can't figure out what to put in my batch file to run SRE.
  29. A.  Run SRINSTAL to set up a batch file automatically.

  31. Q.  I don't know how to set up my BBS software to run SRE.
  32. A.  Consult your BBS manual for more information.  Look for information
  33.     on running DOORS.  You also need to produce a DOOR FILE when running
  34.     SRE.  Select a door file format that is compatible with the options
  35.     listed in SRINSTAL.

  37. Q.  I have a high speed modem running at locked baud rates.
  38. A.  Use SRLOCK.  It changes the door file to have the correct baud rate.

  40. Q.  I get ANSI trash locally.
  41. A.  Run SRE without the /LOG option - edit the batch file.

  43. Q.  I want a bulletin with the instructions for the game.
  44. A.  Run:
  45.        SRE INSTRUCTIONS /ANSI=0 /LOG
  46.        REN SRE.LOG SRETEXT.TXT
  47.        SRE INSTRUCTIONS /ANSI=1 /LOG
  48.        REN SRE.LOG SRETEXT.ANS
  49.     Then SRETEXT.TXT & SRETEXT.ANS will have the (long) instruction
  50.     file for SRE.  For the short instruction file,
  51.        SRE DISPLAY SREHINT.TXT /ANSI=0 /LOG
  52.        REN SRE.LOG SREINTRO.TXT
  53.        SRE DISPLAY SREHINT.TXT /ANSI=1 /LOG
  54.        REN SRE.LOG SREINTRO.ANS
  55.     The reason these files aren't included is that the SREHELP.TXT file,
  56.     when ZIPped, is 14k, and including it three times (the normal one,
  57.     the ANSI version, and the non-ANSI version) isn't good for long
  58.     distance callers trying to download SRE!

  60. Q.  I have Telegard and I don't know how to set it up to run SRE.
  61. A.  Set up the option for "Command Execution Keys" to "DG" and
  62.     the MString to "SRE.BAT".  Then create an SRE.BAT with SRINSTAL's
  63.     Set up batch file option.

  65. Q.  I'm running TAG.
  66. A.  Switch to Telegard.

  68. Q.  I have TAG and I don't know how to set it up to run SRE.
  69. A.  Set up the option for "PKey" to "=" and the "PData" to "SRE.BAT".
  70.     Then create an SRE.BAT with SRINSTAL's Set up batch file option.

  72. Q.  I have Spitfire and I don't know how to set it up to run SRE.
  73. A.  You need to set up a door in the batch file (SF.BAT).  What you
  74.     can do is run SRINSTAL and create SRE.BAT, then insert SRE.BAT
  75.     into SF.BAT in the appropriate place.  The SF.BAT file has comments
  76.     indicating where to insert commands for each door.  Also, you need
  77.     to edit your SFDOR.MNU to add an entry for SRE.  If you have not
  78.     done this before, consult your BBS documentation (SPITFIRE.DOC) for
  79.     detailed step-by-step instructions.

  81. Q.  I get snow on my CGA monitor.
  82. A.  Use the /BIOS switch when running SRE to remove snow.

  84. Q.  SRE runs too slowly.
  85. A.  If you have a fully compatible COLOR monitor, you may use
  86.     SRE /FASTWRITE to speed up screen writes.  (Opposite of /BIOS)
  87.     SRE's file routines have been re-written to get a very high speed;
  88.     however, if you still need more speed, try running a small disk
  89.     cache.  SRE's data files are *.SR (rarely over 64k) and are
  90.     accessed often.  (Try to use a read-only disk cache; some caches
  91.     don't write to the disk when SRE wants them too; if SRE crashes,
  92.     you may lose important game data!)

  94. Q.  I am using DesqView and running SRE produces trash on my screen.
  95. A.  Use the /BIOS switch to ensure compatibility with DesqView.

  97. Q.  I have a monochrome monitor.  How can I play locally without color?
  98. A.  Use the /ANSI=0 switch to turn off ANSI color.  Also use /BIOS
  99.     to make sure SRE is compatible with your monochrome display card.

  101. Q.  My modem buffer causes the pauses and Yes/No prompts to be
  102.     extremely slow on the remote side.
  103. A.  Use the /NOSPECIALEFFECTS switch to turn off the special effects
  104.     at the pauses and Yes/No prompts.

  106. Q.  I want to know what the users have done in SRE.
  107. A.  Use the /LOG option to write all output to the file SRE.LOG.  Note:
  108.     this file is overwritten every time SRE runs.

  110. Q.  I want a separate file to contain the scores.
  111. A.  SRE automatically creates SRESCORES.ANS (ANSI file) and
  112.     SRESCORES.MSG (non-ANSI file) when it runs.  You can modify
  113.     the batch file to copy these files to your BBS's bulletins
  114.     or any other place you may need the files.

  116. Q.  I want to be on the SRE mailing list without paying $15!
  117. A.  Fill out the form SREINFO.TXT and you don't have to pay $15!
  118.     In our reply, we also will tell you the latest versions of our
  119.     programs.

  121. Q.  I want to register but I don't want my name to appear.
  122. A.  Your name will appear at the end of the game in the registered
  123.     version.  We do not register to your handle for legal reasons.
  124.     (A handle is not a legal recipient of registration benefits.)

  127. Q.  I hate that annoying *UNREGISTERED* beep!
  128. A.  Run SRE with the /NOBEEPS switch to disable the beeps locally
  129.     (when a remote user is playing).  The beeps still occur remotely,
  130.     but you won't have to lose any sleep over it!

  132. Q.  I want to register but I don't want my name to be added to
  133.     junk-mail mailing lists.
  134. A.  Don't worry!  All registerers of SRE will NOT be added to any
  135.     junk-mail list.  Our list is used ONLY for notifying registered
  136.     users of updates and/or bulletins.

  138. Q.  I'm running OPUS.
  139. A.  Switch to Telegard.  Actually, in our experience, no one has been
  140.     able to run SRE on OPUS.  Remote Access, Telegard, Spitfire, TAG,
  141.     Searchlight, and Wildcat are able to run our games.

  143. Q.  My computer is an oldie 4.77 mhz 8088 with CGA...
  144. A.  Don't worry!  It'll be an antique worth millions of dollars in
  145.     70 years!  And besides... SRE was written on a 4.77 mhz CGA computer!

  147. Q.  I don't have enough money to register.
  148. A.  Just send in the SREINFO.TXT form and you'll be officially
  149.     on our list of Sysops Running SRE!  You'll be on the list of
  150.     registered users here at the Solar Realms, but you won't receive
  151.     a registration number.

  153. Q.  SRE locks up occasionally.
  154. A.  We're working on this, but it is hard to track down.

  159. Q.  I need to delete a user.
  160. A.  Use SRE EDIT to delete a user, change his/her/its handle, or
  161.     change the name of the empire.

  163. Q.  I've received my registration numbers and I want to know how
  164.     to get the registration benefits.
  165. A.  Type SRE REGISTER and enter your registration numbers.

  167. Q.  Why is there no full editor in SRE?
  168. A.  Many sysops want a full editor; many more users don't.  They are
  169.     afraid that the temptation may be too great for sysops to give themselves
  170.     extra money.  However, we are planning to make the mini-editor
  171.     a little more powerful.

  174. A.  Delete STATUS.SRE.  It won't display "Registered to Joe Bloggs" anymore.
