- -1-
- WHAT IS QUICK TERM?
-
- Quick Term is a stand alone term program that is meant to be associated with
- the live game, Super Two Card Poker. This optional term program opens up a
- whole new world in live game play offering instant pop-up screens, graphics,
- and cards. You'll be amazed at how the screens and graphics instantly appear!
- The game play speed is signicantly increased. Please note however, that Quick
- Term is for use ONLY with the live game Super Two Card Poker. Quick Term
- will not do this with any other live games, though all future games written
- by Steve Barber will probably use Quick Term or something similar.
-
-
- DISTRIBUTION
-
- This game has been donated to the Public Domain as FreeWare. You may use this
- program as long as you like without any required registration. You are greatly
- encouraged to distribute this program as freely as you like as long as the
- contents of this archive are NOT modified in any way. You may also download
- the latest version of Quick Term and/or Super Two Card Poker from The Gamer's
- Connection BBS (615) 391-4807. Although this is FreeWare and no Registration
- is required to use or continue using this product; Quick Term and Super Two
- Card Poker have been the subject of many, Many, MANY hours of long strenious
- work. I would gladly appreciate any donations if you enjoy these programs,
- and would defintaly encourage me to continue work and enhancement on these
- and future programs. I plan to start working on another term program
- similar to this one for use with Super Two Card Poker that will take advantage
- of Tandy, EGA, and maybe even VGA graphics. Also, any programmer who would
- like to have the complete source code package to Quick Term version 1.0,
- you can purchase this package for $75. There is more information on this
- subject in the latter part of this document.
-
-
-
- WHAT QUICK TERM DOES
-
- Quick Term communicates with Super Two Card Poker by sending and receiving
- special codes that allow almost unlimited results. I won't go into detail
- about how it works, it is quite complicated, but nevertheless, it offers
- you the user, a whole new invovated and enhanced way to play Super Two Card
- Poker. All Screens and Cards will "Pop-Up" INSTANTLY without the game taking
- 25-45 seconds to draw each screen. Also, almost all graphics used by
- Super Two Card Poker will have a slight increase themselves (anywhere from
- 3% - 7% increase). Thus, providing you a FAST and NEAT way to play.
- And what's nice about all of this, it's VERY EASY to set up and install.
- Once you install it, it's as easy as pressing F6 before you go into the game.
- I have provided detailed and easy instructions that both beginning and
- advanced users can follow to set up and use this program. And one of the
- best things about this, Super Two Card Poker will automatically detect
- if you are using Quick Term and will go into "Enhanced Mode". You can also
- toggle it on/off within the game if you need to. Also, Quick Term will
- automatically exit itself and return to DOS or your Terminal Program when
- you finish playing Super Two Card Poker. This is all very easy to use.
-
-
-
-
- -------------------------------------- 1 --------------------------------------
- -2-
- HOW TO INSTALL QUICK TERM
-
- You might be saying by now, "this sounds all too complicated for me!". Well,
- don't worry! Once Quick Program is installed correctly, all you have to do
- is press a key you assign (any key) to activate Quick Term, and the rest
- is AUTOMATIC!! Super Two Card Poker and Quick Term will take care of
- Everything! I have provided instructions for installing Quick Term on four
- communication programs. These are all very popular and widely used and simple.
- If you by chance don't use on the three specfic programs (Telemate,
- Telix, or Procomm), you can still set it up. I have provided instructions
- on setting Quick Term on any Generic Comm Program. Most term programs allow
- a simple drop to DOS command that will allow you to run any external program.
-
-
- INSTRUCTIONS FOR TELEMATE:
-
- Load TeleMate as you normally would. It doesn't matter where you start at
- when TeleMate loads (either at the dialing directory, or terminal mode).
- Press Alt-M twice. (Mouse users can click the Macro menu twice.)
- You will now be at the macro menu. Select the type of key you want to
- press in order to run Quick Term. (For simplicity, you might want to choose
- the function keys). If you want to run Quick Term by just pressing a function
- key like F3 or F6, all you have to do is hit enter then. If you want to
- select a different key type besides a function key, move the highlighted bar
- until you are on the type of key you want. Regardless of which type of key
- you want, you will now see a box with the keys you can select. Select any
- vacant slot by pressing the up or down arrow until you come to it. If the
- key you want to use already has some characters by it, press your END key
- when you are on the line and backspace until the line is empty. Now, this is
- the hard part heh heh: Type in the following line when you are at the function
- key you want to use...
-
- ^= QuikTerm 2 ^M
-
- (Substitute 2 for your com port) For example if you use Com 1 then type:
-
- ^= QuikTerm 1 ^M
-
- Then all you have to do (if you haven't already), is press enter twice.
- Remember to save your changes by selecting Save Macro at the Macro Menu.
- Save it in the file called ANSI.mac (should be in your Telemate dir).
- Simple huh! That's all there is to it, except that if you don't have the
- file called QuikTerm.exe included in this archive in your Telemate directory,
- you will need to move it to your Telemate directory.
-
- In Short, this is what you should have done:
- 1> Load Telemate
- 2> Press Alt-M twice
- 3> Select the type of key to want to press to run Quick Term.
- 4> Select a vacant key or erase an existing one.
- 5> Type the line in according to the above examples.
- 6> Press Enter Twice
- 7> Select Save Macro at Macro Menu.
- 8> Save changes in file called ANSI.Mac.
-
- For information on running Quick Term, skip down to the section titled
- RUNNING QUICK TERM.
-
-
- -------------------------------------- 2 --------------------------------------
- -3-
- INSTRUCTIONS FOR TELIX:
-
- Load Telix as you normally would. You will be automatically placed in
- terminal mode. Press Alt-O. You will see another menu with several options.
- Next press P. Here you must select a vacant letter. Select Q if it's open,
- otherwise, pick any letter that is open. Type in the following information
- so that the box has this information filled in exactly:
-
- Protocol Upload Download Bat or DL
- Key Name Filename Filename Script Name
- ---- -------- --------- --------- -------- ----
- Q QuikTerm QT QT Batch N
-
- Once this information has been filled in, exit that menu and remember to
- save the changes to disk. (It's the last menu option when you press
- Alt-O.)
-
- Now, there will be a batch file in the Quick Term archive named QT.Bat.
- This batch file is set up to run Quick Term for COM 2. This is what
- QT.Bat should look like:
-
- QuikTerm 2
-
-
- If your modem does not use COM Port 2, you must change the line to read like
- this:
-
- QuikTerm 1
-
-
- If you wish, you can specify a baud rate. This is optional:
-
- QuikTerm 3 9600
-
-
- This would tell Quick Term to use COM 3 and to lock the baud rate at 9600
- if available. Remember to put this file and QuikTerm.exe in your Telix
- directory. That's all there is to it!
-
- In Short, this is what you should have done:
- 1) Load Telix
- 2) Press Alt-O
- 3) Press P
- 4) Select a vacant letter
- 5) Fill out the exteral protocol box as mentioned above
- 6) Exit the current box/window
- 7) Save changes to disk
- 8) Configure QT.Bat as mentioned above.
-
- For Information on Running Quick Term, skip down to the section titled
- RUNNING QUICK TERM.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- -------------------------------------- 3 --------------------------------------
- -4-
- INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROCOMM PLUS:
-
- Place all contents of QuikTerm.Zip into your ProComm directory. If you
- use a COM PORT other than Com 2, you must edit the file QT.Bat included
- in the archive. To set Quick Term up for Com 1, change the line in the file
- to read like this:
-
- QuikTerm 1
-
- If you use a com port other than 1 or 2, change the number to your com port.
- Uses who wish to lock the baud rate, you may also specify the baud rate.
- Example:
-
- QuikTerm 3 38400
-
- Quick Term would use COM 3 and lock the baud rate at 38400. But if you are
- using 38400 speeds, why are you setting this up in the first place <grin>?
- Once you have configured QT.Bat to your needs, load ProComm Plus, from the
- terminal screen, press ALT-S. You will see a few options. Select file/path
- options. Note at the end bottom of the list, you will see User Hot Key
- Options, F and G. Note the user hot key corresponding to the option (F or
- G) that you select. F = ALT-J G = ALT-U.
-
- Select either one using the F or G key, type in QT and smash Enter. Crush
- Esc to return to the Setup Utility Main Menu than press S to save the Setup
- Options to disk. That's all you have to do. Please refer to the section
- HOW TO RUN QUICK TERM for further instructions on how to run Quick Term.
-
-
-
- OTHER GENERIC COMMUNICATION PROGRAMS INSTRUCTIONS:
-
- If you do not use Telemate, Telix, or Procomm Plus, don't worry.
- All term programs allow something as basic as a Drop to DOS procedure.
- By Droping to DOS, you can run the file called QT.Bat that will run
- Quick Term for you. The only thing you need to do is to find out what
- key you have to press to Drop to DOS, and also to setup the QT.Bat batch
- file. On some term programs, you press Alt-D to drop to DOS, on others,
- it's Alt-J, and on others you can drop to DOS from selecting an option
- on a menu. If you know how to drop to DOS from your term program, you
- have accomplished the hardest part in this easy installation. Once you
- know how to drop to DOS, you need to place the file QuikTerm.exe and QT.bat
- in your term directory or where your path reaches. Next, edit the file
- QT.Bat. QT.bat is already set up for COM 2. If you use COM 1, change the
- one line batch file to read:
-
- QuikTerm 1
-
- If you use a COM port other than 1 or 2, change the number to your com port.
- You can also lock the baud rate by putting the baud rate after the com port
- number. Example
-
- QuikTerm 2 9600
-
- This would tell Quick Term to use COM Port 2 and lock the baud rate at 9600.
- That's all there is to it. For instructions on how to run Quick Term using
- a Generic Term Program, read the following section.
-
- -------------------------------------- 4 --------------------------------------
- -5-
-
-
- RUNNING QUICK TERM
-
- The following section instructs you how to run Quick Term on the
- four selected term programs.
- Please Note: Whichever term program you are using, you must run Quick Term
- before the game loads. Super Two Card Poker will automatically detect
- that you are using Quick Term when program starts. If you don't load it
- in time or before the program loads, you can still run Quick Term within
- the game if you haven't already. Then, you can toggle Quick Term on or off
- when you begin to play the game by hitting T.
-
-
- TELEMATE:
-
- Brief: Hit your assigned macro key to run Quick Term. When Quick Term loads,
- run Super Two Card Poker by pressing the number or letter on the BBS
- Menu you saw before you ran Quick Term. Quick Term will automatically
- exit to Telemate when finished.
-
- Detailed:
-
- Before you load Super Two Card Poker, hit the key you selected to run
- Quick Term. (Example: F6) If you have set everything up correctly,
- Quick Term will load just by pressing that key. You will probably have
- a near blank screen when it starts and Quick Term will notify you when
- it has loaded. You are still on-line with the BBS you were on, you're just
- using a different term program at the moment. Next, do whatever you have
- to do to run Super Two Card Poker. This might confuse some of you.
- I will try to explain this: For example, say you are on a BBS at the main
- menu. You hit O for On-Line Games or whatever the key is to enter the Live
- Games or Door Menus. You notice that Super Two Card Poker is door #1.
- Next, you hit F6 or whatever your macro key is to run Quick Term.
- If set up correctly, Quick Term will say:
-
- Quick Term Active! Press Alt-X To Exit...
-
- This means you are now ready to run the game. You've got to remember you
- are still on the BBS in the SAME PLACE you where before you loaded Quick
- Term. So, next you hit 1 or whatever the number or letter was on the
- BBS Menu to run Super Two Card Poker. If everything works correctly,
- Super Two Card Poker will automatically detect you using Quick Term and
- Quick Term will say:
-
- Extended Connection Established!
-
- Then, about a second later, the title screen for Super Two Card Poker will
- POP UP INSTANTLY!!! Neat eh! Play the game as you normally would.
- You will notice all screens and cards and some graphics poping up instantly.
- Quick Term will automatically exit and go back to Telemate when you finish.
- If per chance, it does not, hit Alt-X to exit.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- -------------------------------------- 5 --------------------------------------
- -6-
- TELIX:
-
- Brief: Hit Pg Down (Page Down). Hit Q or what ever key Quick Term is
- assigned to. Run Super Two Card Poker after Quick Term has loaded
- by pressing the letter or number on the BBS Menu you saw before
- loading Quick Term. Quick Term will automatically exit itself after
- you finish playing, and go back to Telix.
-
- Detailed:
-
- Before you run Super Two Card Poker from the BBS, load Quick Term by pressing
- the Page Down key and then pressing the key you assigned Quick Term to in the
- installation. If set up correctly, Quick Term will load and say:
-
- Quick Term Active! Press Alt-X to Exit...
-
- Now, this may seem a little weird, but you are STILL on the BBS at
- THE EXACT SAME PLACE you where before you loaded Quick Term. So, when Quick
- Term has loaded, press the number or letter to run Super Two Card Poker that
- was on the BBS Menu before you loaded Quick Term. Super Two Card Poker will
- run and automatically detect if you are using Quick Term and if everything
- has been set up correctly, Quick Term will say:
-
- Extended Connection Established!
-
- A second later, the title screen will POP UP INSTANTLY! Play the game as
- you normally would. If you forget to run Quick Term before Super Two
- Card Poker starts, you can still run Quick Term and toggle it on or off
- when you play the game. You will notice that all screens, all cards, and some
- graphics will pop up instantly. When you finished the game, Quick Term
- will automatically exit and go back to Telix. If per chance, Quick Term
- does not exit automatically, you can press Alt-X to exit.
-
-
-
- PROCOMM PLUS:
-
- Brief: Hit Alt-J or Alt-U according to how you set it up previously. Run
- Super Two Card Poker after Quick Term has loaded by pressing the
- letter or number you saw for it on the BBS Menu. Quick Term will
- auto exit after you have played Super Two Card Poker.
-
- Detailed:
-
- You should load and run Super Two Card Poker as you always have by pressing
- the letter or number you see on the BBS menu. However, before you load
- the game, make sure you hit Alt-J or Alt-U to run Quick Term. If you have
- everything set up correctly, Quick Term should load and you should see:
-
- Quick Term Active! Press Alt-X to Exit...
-
- Please be aware, you are still on the BBS and are STILL in the exact same place
- you were before you ran Quick Term. Therefore, if you were at the Doors or
- Live Games Menu, you are still there, so all you have to do is enter the
- number of letter that the menu said for Super Two Card Poker.
-
-
- -------------------------------------- 6 --------------------------------------
- -7-
-
- When Super Two Card Poker loads, Quick Term should display the message:
-
- Extended Connection Established!
-
- A second later, the title screen will pop up INSTANTLY! You will notice a
- <SLIGHT> increase in speed <grin>. Actually, all screens, and cards, and
- some graphics will pop up instantly. If per chance, you forget to load
- Quick Term before entering Super Two Card Poker, you can still run Quick Term
- by pressing Alt-J or Alt-U. Then, toggle it on or off within the game by
- pressing T at the game screen. After you quit, Quick Term will automatically
- exit and go back to ProComm. Incase it doesn't or you want to prematurally
- exit Quick Term, hit Alt-X and you should return to ProComm.
-
-
-
- OTHER GENERIC COMMUNICATION PROGRAMS:
-
- Brief: Before running Super Two Card Poker, shell to DOS. Then type in QT
- and Quick Term should load. Then run Super Two Card Poker as you
- normally would. Quick Term should kick you back out to DOS after
- playing Super Two Card Poker. Then type EXIT to go back to your
- main terminal/communication program.
-
- Detailed:
-
- Before you run Super Two Card Poker, drop to DOS and type in:
-
- QT
-
- This will load Quick Term according to how you set it up earlier. If you have
- set everything up correctly, Quick Term will load and you should see:
-
- Quick Term Active! Press Alt-X to Exit...
-
- Ok, Quick Term is loaded, now all you have to do is run Super Two Card Poker
- from the BBS. Remember, you are still on-line on the same BBS at the exact
- same place you left it. Do whatever you normally do to run Super Two Card
- Poker (usually pressing a letter or number and then enter).
- When Super Two Card Poker loads, it should auto detect Quick Term and kick
- Quick Term into extended mode. If so, Quick Term will say:
-
- Extended Connection Established!
-
- You will then see the title screen "pop-up" INSTANTLY! All screens, cards,
- and some graphics will pop up instantly. If you forget to load Quick Term
- before entering the game, you can still load it by shelling to DOS and
- typing in QT. Then, hit T to toggle Quick Term when you have begun playing.
- Quick Term should automatically exit after you have finished playing. If not,
- hit Alt-X to exit at any time. Type Exit to return to your main comm program
- after you have returned to DOS.
-
