- --------------------- Labyrinth Instructions -------------------------
- ======================
- OBJECT: The object of the game is to be the first player to earn
- 150,000 points. This can be done by traveling through the
- labyrinth, getting treasures that are found, battling other
- characters to improve experience, selling treasures for gold,
- buying armor to improve defense and drinking potions to improve
- strength.
-
- THE DIGITAL BULLY: This Labyrinth is owned by the Digital Bully.
- He is a flat-topped tough guy who occasionally runs around the
- maze and steals the posessions of the players after beating them
- up a bit. However, he can sometimes be stopped. You can use a
- bomb against him but it would sometimes be wasted if he is just
- running by. Sometimes you get lucky and his mugging attempt will
- fail. If so, he'll drop 1-10 of every item, except bombs, into
- the room. If you win the game, by reaching 150,000 points, the
- Digital Bully will get upset and cry.
-
- MOVING: To move around the labyrinth, the directional commands of
- N,S,E,W are used. If you would like to move north, simply type
- "N" and hit return. Of course, there must be an exit in that
- direction for you to go that way. If you are unsure of the exits,
- use the "L" command to Look at the room.
-
- MAPPING: Mapping is done for you as you go from room to room. To
- see the map of where you've been so far, use the "M" command.
- If you are chased into an unfamiliar part of the maze, the rooms
- will not be mapped.
-
- TURNS LEFT: The number of turns left lets you know how many more
- times you can move. The only action that will decrease your turns
- left is a move. The number of turns left can be increased by
- drinking potions. (see POTIONS for more) If you run out of turns,
- you can't move any more. You also won't be able to play again
- that day. If you quit before you run out of turns, you may log on
- again the same day and use the rest of your turns. However, you
- get a maximum of 3 plays per day, regardless of how many turns you
- have left.
-
- YOUR STATS: If you would like to look at your personal statistics,
- use the "Y" command. This action will give you a display of
- information about Yourself.
-
- TREASURE: As you move from room to room you are likely to find some
- treasure. To pick the treasure up, use the "G" command for
- Get treasure. The treasure will be removed from the room and
- added to your posessions. You will want to "T"rade your treasures
- in for gold when you find a MERCHANT so that you can improve your
- armor and strength. One treasure you may find is a POTION. You
- may either drink the potion or sell it for the displayed price in
- a merchant's room. (see POTIONS for more) Another treasure you
- may encounter is a BOMB. (see BOMBS for more)
- Also, if a player retreats in a battle, he/she may drop some
- treasure and the victor of the battle can gain posession of it.
- Treasure can be dropped with the "J"unk items command. This would
- be useful for gaining the more valuable items or to keep the Digital
- Bully from stealing what you have.
-
- MERCHANTS: Some of the rooms in the labyrinth will contain MERCHANTS.
- These are non player characters who will buy your treasures and
- sell you armor and potions if you desire. The prices are displayed
- when you activate the "L"ook command. The prices change at the
- start of each day and remain the same until the next day. Whether
- you buy or sell Potions, the price will be the same as the price
- that is posted. One tip may be to sell when the price is high and
- buy when the price is low. Armor can not be sold.
-
- POTIONS: Potions are very helpful. You can obtain potions either by
- buying them from a merchant or finding them during your travels.
- However, finding potions is a rare occasion. To use a potion, simply
- press "P" and hit return. You will then be asked how many potions
- you would like to drink. You have the option to choose 0 if you
- change your mind about drinking them. When you drink a potion, there
- is an 80% chance that you will gain between 1 and 10 hit points per
- potion. Each potion will have a 20% chance of adding turns instead
- of hit points. You never know how many hit points or how many turns
- will be added. Each potion will add one or the other, not both.
- You can also sell your potions if you are trying to earn enough gold
- to improve your armor. You can drink ALL your potions with the
- "P!" command.
-
- ARMOR: The only way to obtain armor is to buy it from a MERCHANT.
- To buy armor, use the "U" command for Upgrade armor. If you
- have enough gold and there is a merchant in the room, you can
- upgrade your armor. Your gold will be decremented accordingly.
- The price can range from 3000 to 8000 gold pieces. Armor is needed
- to help defend against attacks. The higher your armor, the lower
- your opponent's chances of hitting. The only way you can lose
- armor is to have a bomb explode on you. (see BOMBS for more)
- Armor will protect you against bombs as well. When a bomb explodes
- on you, you will lose (50 - ArmorType) percent of your hit points.
- You will also lose 1 armor type every time a bomb explodes on you.
-
- STRENGTH: Your strength is determined by your number of Hit Points.
- Strength can be improved by drinking potions that add hit points.
- Strength can be decreased by getting hit in a battle, by getting
- tired in a battle, or by having a bomb explode on you. Each time
- you get hit in a battle, you will lose 1 hit point. Every time
- you get tired in a battle, you will lose 1 hit point. If you have
- a bomb explode on you, you can lose up to 50% of your hit points. Your
- strength is calculated as (Hit Points/20). Strength improves your
- chances of hitting an opponent in a battle. If you reach 0 hit
- points, you will die. If you die you can play again the next day
- and revitalize your character.
-
- EXPERIENCE: Experience is very important in this game. Experience
- improves your chances of both hitting an opponent and avoiding
- an opponents hit against you. Experience is hard to earn but you
- rarely lose it. You earn experience through battling with other
- players. The amount of experience you earn is determined by how
- hard it is to hit your opponent. The number of hits you earn is
- calculated by:
- (Opponents Experience + Armor) / (Your Experience + Strength)
- If you miss you are awarded 1/2 of what you would earn for a hit.
- A retreat attempt will earn you 1/4th of what you would earn for a hit.
- Experience is calculated by (Hits/50).
- The only way you can lose experience is by attacking a player whose
- score is more than 20,000 points below your own or by being chased
- if you are the bounty target.
-
- BOMBS: Bombs are a very nasty treasure. They are activated by a
- player entering a room that contains a bomb. If you activate a
- bomb, you are instructed to choose a number from 0 to 7. If you
- guess the right number, you will deactivate the bomb and you can
- carry it around with you. To drop the bomb, use the "!" command.
- However, if you guess wrong, you will lose up to 50% of your hit
- points and up to 2 armor. You can NOT be killed by a bomb. If you
- only have 1 hit point, the bomb will deduct 0 hit points from you.
- The reason for having bombs is to try to keep some players from
- becoming so huge, nobody can touch them. If you are lucky enough
- to log on and see a bomb already in your room, you can pick it up
- without having to deactivate it. You may also use a bomb in a
- battle if you have one. When you are about to engage in battle and
- before you exit the game, you will be prompted as to whether or not
- you wish to use a bomb in a battle. If you say yes, as soon as a
- battle starts, you will drop the bomb and your opponent will have
- to deactivate it. The only player affected by the bomb is the one
- that activates it. Bombs can also be used to scare off the Digital
- Bully if he is about to mug you.
-
- DESCRIBING PLAYERS: If you enter a room that has another player in
- it, you can describe him/her. Simply use the "D" command and you
- will be shown the first player in the room. If there is more than
- one player in the room, you will be prompted to hit RETURN for the
- next description. You will get a description of Strength and
- Armor. You will not be informed of their exact number of hit points
- or what their experience is. You can compare their stats to your
- own to determine if you want to ATTACK this player or not. If there
- is a dead player in the room, it will simply tell you that the
- player is dead. You will also be told about how many treasure items
- the player is carrying. The number could be off by two because it's
- hard to know exactly how many items a player has. Gold is not
- included in this number.
-
- ATTACKING: If you are in a room with another player you have the option
- to attack that player. It would be wise to first do a DESCRIBE of
- that player or to check the RANKS to determine your chances against
- this particular opponent. If you choose to attack a player that is
- in the same room as you, select the "A" command and hit return.
- You will then be asked to verify your selection with a "Y" or an "N".
- Of course, if the opponent attacks you as you enter the room, you
- don't have the option to attack, you must do battle. If you have a
- bomb in your posession, you may use it against your opponent. (See
- BOMBS for more info.) You will be warned if attacking a smaller
- player will cause you to lose experience.
- You can also attack a player who enters the room while you are
- offline. See QUIT for more information on this.
-
- BATTLE: A battle between two players involves many things. First,
- one of the players must have initiated an attack. The attacking
- player gets first swing. Both players take turns swinging at each
- other trying to score a hit. To determine if a hit has occured,
- the following aspects are considered: The strength of the player
- making the swing, the experience of the player making the swing, the
- armor of the player defending against the swing, the experience of
- the player defending against the swing, and both player's luck factor.
- Luck factor is a random number from 1 to 20 given to each player for
- every swing that is initiated.
- Once a player reaches his/her retreat number (declared before the
- battle), he/she will try to retreat. (see RETREAT for more infomation
- on retreating.
-
- RETREAT: A retreat is when a player reaches his/her declared number
- of hit points and elects not to take any more damage. However, a
- retreat attempt is not always succesful. A direction to run: North,
- South, East or West, is selected at random. However, if that exit
- does not exist, your opponent swings again. This will continue until
- a player succesfully retreats or is killed. Once a player starts
- retreating, he/she will not be able to swing back at the opponent.
- When a player quits the game, he/she will be prompted for a retreat
- number in the event that he/she is involved in a battle while offline.
- If a retreat number of 0 is selected, the player will fight to the
- death. A player may also drop some treasure while trying to retreat.
- If an offline player retreats into a room with treasure in it, he/she
- will pick it up. If there were any potions, he/she will drink them
- to gain hit points. Bombs will not be dropped during a retreat.
-
- HAPPENED: The "H" command will remind you what happened to your
- character while you were offline. The list of what happened is
- displayed when you first log into the game but this command will
- show it again. You will be told the results of any battles that
- you were involved in. A number in parenthesis at the end of the
- of the line tells how many times in a row that event happened.
- Example: "You chased John Doe. (3)" means you chased him 3 times.
-
- RANKS: The ranks can be viewed by selecting the "V" command for
- "View Rankings". The rankings will show where each player is
- compared to the other players. A score is also given that will
- help to determine a players standings compared to other players.
- The points are scored by considering Strength, Armor and
- Experience. The better the player, the higher the score. The
- player that is in first place at the start of the day will have
- a bounty placed on him/her. (see BOUNTY for more info.)
- If a player has a score reading "R.I.P.", that player is dead.
-
- BOUNTY: The bounty is a reward for killing, injuring or chasing
- the player that was in first place at the start of the day. To
- see who the bounty is on, select the "X" command for eXtra info.
- This will show you who the bounty is on (The Bounty Target), and
- how much the bounty is worth. The player who initiates the
- bounty target to retreat will get 50% of the bounty. Any player who
- causes the bounty target to continue retreating will earn 1% of the
- bounty. If a player kills the bounty target, he/she will earn
- 100% of the bounty. The bounty for causing retreat or killing is
- rewarded in experience. The bounty for chasing an already retreating
- target is gold.
-
- QUIT: Quitting this game is not as easy as most. First you must
- verify that you really want to quit by responding with a "Y".
- You will then be asked if you wish to use a bomb if you are become
- involved in a battle. You may choose "Y" even if you do not have
- a bomb. If you happen to get a bomb, you will use it, otherwise,
- the battle will resume without you using a bomb.
- Next you must set up your player as to how it will respond
- to other players while you are offline. If a player enters the
- room you quit in, you may attack. However, you probably don't
- want to attack players that are very strong so you must determine
- the most powerful player that you will attack. You will be
- prompted for the maximum number of hit points the player may have
- for you to attack. You will be prompted for the maximum armor
- type that the player may have for you to attack. You will also be
- prompted for a retreat number. (see RETREAT for more info)
- Afterwards, while you are offline, if anyone enters your room with
- strength and armor lower than you declared, you will attack.
- If you are involved in a battle while offline, you will fight until
- you or your opponent reach the declared retreat number or dies.
- If you do reach your declared retreat number, you will no longer
- attack anybody..
- Some defaults have been set up to make quitting a little easier
- for you. The defaults will cause you to attack a player who has
- fewer hit points than should penetrate your amor, and has armor equal
- to or less than what you can hit.
- The default for retreating will allow you to lose 20% of your
- hit points before retreating.
- If you want to take all the defaults, you can quit much faster
- by using the command "Q!". This will give you all the defaults
- and quit the game faster and easier.
-
- RESTOCKING: When a player quits the game, the labyrinth will be
- restocked according to the stock percentage that is set by the SysOp
- and the number of turns that the player has used. The greater the
- stock percentage, and the greater the number of turns used, the
- greater the number of rooms that will be stocked. Each item also has
- a stock percentage that will determine how often an item is to be
- stocked. Some items are more rare than others and are usually worth
- more. This restocking is why the labyrinth never runs out of treasure
- and you never know where the treasure will be when you log on.
-
- HALL OF FAME: If a player reaches 150,000 points his/her name will be
- sent to the people at Spectral Computer Systems by your SysOp and
- will be added to the Labyrinth Hall of Fame. Reaching 150,000 points
- is basically considered winning the game. A picture of the Digital
- Bully crying will show up as your reward for beating him and his
- Labyrinth. You can view the Hall of Fame by entering the "Z" command
- for Ze Hall of Fame.
-
- TIPS: The most important strategy behind this game is to play every
- day (or as many days as possible). Any day that you don't play,
- other players who do play, will gain points while you are unlikely
- to. It is also important to play smart. Fight the big guys
- occasionally but don't overdo it. If you are fairly weak, set your
- retreat number high so you'll always run away. Set your attack
- codes to attack people who are smaller than you, but to retreat soon
- if you start to lose. Buy potions when the prices are low and sell
- when they are high. If you chase a player, watch what happens in the
- next room. You'll know if it's safe to go that way. If you're
- weak, quit in a room with 4 exits. That way, you'll escape on the
- first try. If you're big, quit in a room with only 1 or 2 exits
- because your victim may have a hard time escaping and you may get
- a few extra hits on him/her.
- Read and print out these instructions, the better you know how the
- game works, the better your chances of doing well.
