- The Bookie Joint - questions - and answers:
-
-
- (Q> Will it work with a (GAP, PCBoard, Wildcat, Spitfire, etc.) system?
-
- (A> As far as I know it'll work with any BBS. The Bookie Joint is written
- using the GAPQBDR library and as such will run with GAP or PCBoard as
- is. Other systems can use one of the many conversion utilities that
- are available. Also, you need a copy of BRUN45.EXE which is the
- QuickBASIC runtime module. It need not be patched.
-
-
-
- (Q> Are the schedules accurate?
-
- (A> To the best of my knowledge. Double check them each week against a
- newspaper. Sometimes the NFL changes starting times or moves a game
- due to a schedule conflict.
-
-
-
- (Q> I want the Bookie Joint for pro games only - no college. Well?
-
- (A> Simply enter a zero "0" in the BOOKSTUP file. Line #2 is the current
- college week. Line #3 is the current Pro week. Entering a zero for
- either will shut that portion down.
-
-
-
- (Q> What keeps a user from betting on games after they've started?
-
- (A> The Bookie Joint compares the system date/time to the game date/time.
- Users may bet 1 o'clock games until 1 o'clock - 4 o'clock games until
- 4 o'clock, etc. They can call back on Monday and bet the Monday Night
- game up until it's starting time.
-
-
- (Q> Does the Bookie Joint collect "vigorish"?
-
- (A> Yes. Vigorish, juice, whatever you call it. It's the 10 per cent
- that's added to all NON-WINNING bets when they are collected. If a
- user bets $100 on a team and they lose, the Bookie collects $110. If
- the same $100 bet TIES the spread, the Bookie collects $10.
-
-
-
- (Q> I need hard copy to work from each week. Does the Bookie Joint print
- out a list of games?
-
- (A> Yes. In the SysOp Utilities there is a printer utility that will let
- the SysOp print out weekly schedules and betting stats to be used as
- a work sheet.
-
-
- (Q> Where's the best place to get the point spreads and scores each week?
-
- (A> I use USA Today. They publish point spreads as early as Monday. I
- prefer to use Tuesday's point spreads as they seem to be more accurate.
- Finding final scores sometimes can be a bit tricky. If there's a late
- night game, sometimes the papers don't publish the scores until the
- following day (Tuesday for Sunday night games). I just watch the
- sports report the following morning (unless I stay up and watch the
- games).
-
-
-
- (Q> Can I change the point spreads after I've entered them initially?
-
- (A> Yes, but I don't recommend doing it. When you collect bets each week
- the collection is determined by the spreads at that time. If a user
- bet a team even and you change the spreads later in the week, that
- user's bet will be collected using the last spread you entered.
- Not fair to the users. Enter the spreads early in the week and leave
- them alone unless you've made a BIG mistake entering them.
-
-
-
- (Q> Can you make The Bookie Joint do (this, that, thus, etc...)?
-
- (A> I'd love to make it do EVERYTHING. And someday maybe it will. Writing
- this door has been a labor of love for me (I'm a footbal freak) and
- I want to include all requests for enhancing it. In time, I'll try.
- I'd like to get a full season in to see what and where changes can be
- made, however.
-
-
-
- (Q> How do you write a door?
-
- (A> Got a minute?
