- ┌─ WHAT IS BID? ─┐
- └────────────────┘
- Welcome to B.I.D. - the BBS Information door. BID is a BBS
- door, designed to help new users on your BBS get a head start at
- BBSing. I had noticed that new users would frequently log onto my
- BBS once or twice, do little more than look around, and often
- never call again. Quite often, it seems, once computer users
- aquire a modem, they will log onto a few BBS systems, find little
- of interest to them, and seldom use their modem again. However,
- the fact is that if many these people only knew what was
- available from BBSes, knew how to get involved, and had a hand
- getting started, they too would probably want to continue
- participating on the BBS. With this in mind, I set forth to write
- BID, a simple door that will introduce new users to BBSing, teach
- tehm about messages, files and doors, and give them some pointers
- as to what would and would not be considered "acceptable
- behaviour" on most BBSes. Furthermore, BID will help new users
- get started with BBSes, by allowing "free" downloads of key
- files, such as compression utilities, yoru BBS membership form,
- and so on. You will also find that you can get BID setup and
- running "as is" in only a matter of a few minutes. Or, if you
- wish to customize the text that BID displays to users, you will
- find this very easy to do.
-
- You will no doubt to be pleased to hear that unlike many doors
- you will see that are written by their authors in an attempt to
- make a quick buck from other hobbyists by selling software for
- much more than it is worth, BID is ABSOLOUTELY FREE! I wrote BID
- because I enjoy to no end this (fantastic) hobby of electronic
- communications, and wished to make my own contribution to it. So,
- if you like this door, you don't have to feel obliged to send me
- money (although I certainly could use it if you want to send some
- :-), just send me a message at 1:163/264@fidonet.org and
- introduce yourself to me!

- ┌─ SETTING UP BID ─┐
- └──────────────────┘
- To get BID setup and running on your BBS, you need only
- follow these steps:
-
- 1.) Simply extract the files from the BID archive, and
- place them in the directory from which you wish to
- run the door. This may be either your BBS
- system directory, or a seperate sub-directory.
- (note that if you use a seperate sub-directory,
- you must cd to this directory prior to running
- BID.) Then add BID to the menu from which new
- users will access it, and setup your BBS system to
- run the door as you would any other door. Because
- BID will only be of help to users if they use it,
- it would probably be a good idea to setup BID on
- your system in such a way that you do everything
- you can to encourage users to make use of the
- door.
-
- 2.) Alter the BBSLIST.TXT file to contain a list of
- BBSes in your area, for use by new BBS users.
-
- 3.) If you wish users to be able to download any files
- from within the door, you must:
-
- A.) Ensure that a copy of DSZ is located
- either in the BID directory, or elsewhere
- in your system "PATH".
-
- B.) Alter the FILES.BBS file to list the
- names and desciptions of the files that
- should be available for download. The
- user will only be able to download files
- that are listed in the FILES.BBS file. If
- you wish the user to be able to download
- a file in a directory other than
- the BID directory, simply include the
- full path and filename of the file you
- wish to allow them to download.
-
-
- ┌─ CUSTOMIZING BID ─┐
- └───────────────────┘
- You may customize some or all of the information
- displayed by the BID system. The main menu can be altered by
- editing the files BIDMENU.ASC, BIDMENU.ANS and BIDMENU.AVT. The
- text displayed by BID is divided into up to 10 different
- sections, each section available from the menu by using the
- number keys 1-10, respectively. Each section is divided into one
- or more individual screens, numbered from 000 to 999. Thus, the
- filenames containing this text are formed as follows:
-
- BIDTEXTx.yyy
-
- where x is the section, and yyy is the individual screen. Hence
- the first file displayed would be BIDTEXT0.000, followed by
- BIDTEXT0.001, etc. Each of these files may contain from 1-19
- lines of text. The rest is up to you!
-
-
- ┌─ A QUICK PLUG FOR OPENDOORS ─┐
- └──────────────────────────────┘
- BID was written in only a few hours (although the text
- BID displays took considerably longer to write), using
- "OpenDoors". If you program in Turbo C, Turbo C++ or Boland C++,
- and are interested in writing doors or other utility programs
- for BBSes, you may request ODOORS*.* from 1:163/264 for the
- newest version. OpenDoors automatically handles almost every
- aspect of programming doors, and is not only very powerful, but
- very easy to use! And, beginning with version 3.00, OpenDoors
- also provides you with a complete set of routines for
- manipulating BBS system, configuration, user files - plus a full
- message base engine! This only scratches the surface of what
- OpenDoors actually is - if you want to find out more, feel free
- pick up a copy!

- BID, please feel more than free to get in touch with me at
