- DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
- buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it,
- you are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details
- -- some request registration while others require it, some specify
- a maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from
- the simple right to continue using the software to an updated
- program with printed manual.
-
- Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and
- the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
- exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
- programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of
- comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad
- ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The
- author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the
- software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For
- example, some authors require written permission before a
- commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
-
- Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
- should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether
- it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting
- your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because
- the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate
- money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay
- for it.
-
- REGISTRATION
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- The Golfing Companion is distributed as shareware. If you paid a

- weeks, you must register your copy.
-
- We offer registered users a the most up to date copy of the program
- with a serial number registered to them as well as their name
- appearing in the opening screen. Registered users will also receive
- technical support, as well of notices of any updates, should they
- occur.
-
- If after a couple of weeks you are still using The Golfing
- Companion, a registration of $35.00 CDN ($30.00 US) will be
- appreciated. Please fill out the supplied registration form and

- PERSONAL HANDICAP CALCULATION
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- This subprogram will prompt you for your name each time you select
- it. Your name is used to create a filename, in which your previous
- 20 scores are stored. These scores are recalled and used in the
- calculation of your handicap. At least five (5) scores need to be
- entered before you will have a valid handicap. You will be given a
- notice on screen if you do not have enough rounds entered. Your
- handicap will still be calculated, it just won't be valid by
- R.C.G.A. standards. Also, at least one score must be entered before
- a handicap may be calculated. You will be given an error message
- should you forget this rule.
-
- PLEASE NOTE: that the database for this subprogram is limited to 20
- entries, since only the 20 most recent entries are required to
- calculate your handicap. Do not be alarmed if you notice your
- oldest entry gone and your most recent entry replacing it. The
- database works off of the order in which you enter the dat, NOT by
- any other method. Be sure to input you information chronologically
-
- To make a selection from the top window, move the
- highlighting bar up/down by pressing the up/down arrow keys. When
- the function you want is highlighted, press ENTER. To Make a

- PERSONAL HANDICAP CALCULATION - cont'd
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
-
-
- CALCULATE YOUR HANDICAP - Calculates your handicap. You must have
- at least one score entered before selecting this option. At
- least five (5) scores are needed for the calculated handicap to
- be valid. This program uses the method set out by the R.C.G.A.
- This is done by saving your last 20 sets of round information
- and using the appropriate numbers of differentials should 20
- sets of round information not be available. The number of
- differentials used to calculate the handicap is based on the
- number of available scores. The appropriate number of
- differentials are added together, multiplied by 10, divided by
- the number of differentials used, and then this number is then
- used to find the appropriate handicap in a pseudo look up table.
-
-
- VIEW and/or EDIT A SCORE - Will allow you to look up and if need be
- edit a previously entered set of information. Press ENTER or down
- arrow to skip by a field.
- The VIEW & EDIT menu has some extra commands:
-
- D - Delete. This will delete a record. Actually, it will fill
- the record with blanks so it can be re-used.
-
- + Move forward one record. Displays the next record in the
- database.
-
- - Move back one record. Displays the previous record.
-
- C - Change. Use this command to change a record name, or
