  2. DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE

  5. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  6. before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
  7. using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
  8. differ on details -- some request registration while others
  9. require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
  10. registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
  11. using the software to an updated program with printed manual.

  13. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
  14. and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  15. exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
  16. programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
  17. of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
  18. and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
  19. distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
  20. and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  21. specific group. For example, some authors require written
  22. permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
  23. Shareware.

  25. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
  26. should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether
  27. it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting
  28. your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because
  29. the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the
  30. ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product,
  31. you don't pay for it.

  44. FISHBYTE (tm) is a "shareware program" and is provided at no
  45. charge to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with
  46. your friends, but please do not give it away altered or as
  47. part of another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software
  48. is to provide personal computer users with quality software
  49. without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers
  50.

  52. to continue to develop new products.  If you find this program
  53. useful and find that you are using FISHBYTE (tm) and continue to
  54. use FISHBYTE (tm) after a reasonable trial period, you must make a
  55. registration payment of $29.95 to EJM Computer Consulting Ltd. The
  56. $29.95 registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
  57. computer at any one time.  You must treat this software just like
  58. a book.  An example is that this software may be used by any
  59. number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
  60. location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
  61. being used at one location while it's being used at another.
  62. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
  63. same time.

  65. Commercial users of FISHBYTE (tm) must register and pay for their
  66. copies of FISHBYTE (tm) within 30 days of first use or their license
  67. is withdrawn.  Site-License arrangements may be made by con-
  68. tacting EJM Computer Consulting Ltd.

  70. Anyone distributing FISHBYTE (tm) for any kind of remuneration
  71. must first contact EJM Computer Consulting Ltd. at P.O. Box 154
  72. East Meadow, New York 11554 for authorization. This
  73. authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
  74. recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for
  75. shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering
  76. FISHBYTE (tm) immediately. (However EJM Computer Consulting Ltd.
  77. must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept
  78. up-to-date with the latest version of FISHBYTE (tm).).

  80. You are encouraged to pass a copy of FISHBYTE (tm) along to your
  81. friends for evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their
  82. copy if they find that they can use it.  All registered users
  83. will receive a copy of the latest version of the FISHBYTE (tm)
