- Searching is basically pretty simple -- in text fields,
- you search for matches, and in numeric fields, you can
- search for MATCH | INEQUALITY | RANGE. Common Spelling
- File Fields 4 and 7 are also MATCH only. You may also
- search in as many fields as you wish. Your progress is
- shown at the bottom of the window. To initiate a Search,
- simply Click the desired field. (you may alternately use
- the cursor keys to scroll to the record and press ENTER.)
- A "CRITERIA" window pops up - What it is asking for is
- HOW a search is to be done. Simply Click/Scroll the type
- you wish.
- * Example in supplied data file:
- In the ANTIQUES Data file, for instance, assume you want
- to locate ALL items MADE after 1900. Click YEAR MADE.
- Then, Click 'GREATER THAN >'. Type in '1900'. That's it!
- ---------------------------------------------------------
- There are 2 other things about Search that bear mention -
- the above example could be continued by selecting another
- data field, such as PRICE PAID. If we continue, we could
- then specify 'LESS THAN <', '400.00'. The result would
- then be: "Items costing > $400.00 made 1900 - present."
- The other thing is that if you look closely, the bottom
- 3 fields are not Data Fields! They are in fact "spread -
- sheet" types of Data made up on the fly and normally seen
- on the Legal Pad as Finance Info. This allows a Collector
- Database to do what YOU want. Now, you can search for
- items that were A) made in a certain time period, B) cost
- $400.00 or less and C) CHANGED IN VALUE BY MORE THAN 25%!
- Indeed, used wisely, Collect! can be a decent investment
- tool.
- ---------------------------------------------------------
- Notes: The Text field matches mentioned before are NOT
- case sensitive. I.E. you can type in "BoOk" and find Book
- and BOOK and book and bOoK all the same.
