  7. The Book Shelf is a simple data base program designed to provide an
  8. easy and convenient way of cataloging books, magazines, publications,
  9. etc.
  10.  
  11. No attempt has been made to emulate formal library practices such as
  12. using the Library of Congress or Dewey-Decimal Systems.  The program
  13. provides features such as:
  14.

  16.     *    Adding, editing and deleting books;
  17.  
  18.     *    Printing book description records or just titles;
  19.  
  20.     *     Viewing book description records;
  21.  
  22.     *    Listing authors, book titles, series names, publ
  23.  
  24.     *    Customizable printer definition and selectable print size.
  25.

  27. The Book Shelf requires a minimum of 256k of available RAM to execute
  28. properly.  It runs under MS-DOS 3.x or higher on the IBM PC, XT, AT
  29. or compatible, and may be used with color (recommended) or monochrome
  30. displays.

  32. It is recommended that a hard drive be used for the benefits of speed
  33. and storage capacity, although the program will work on a floppy based
  34. system.

  36. Virtually any printer may be used.  The PRINTER.DEF file that is provided
  37. should work with most printers.  In the event that the printed copy is
  38. not correct, a function under the OPTIONS menu allows the user to customize
  39. the definition file.

  41. When the program is first installed the following files should be present:
  42.

  44.     BOOKS.EXE, the main program file;
  45.  
  46.     PRINTER.DEF, the default printer definition file;
  47.  
  48.     README, general program information and registration form.
  49.

  51. To run The Book Shelf simply type BOOKS <CR>.  There are no other
  52. installation procedures required for this product.
  53.  
  54. The top of the screen is called the COMMAND LINE.  It contains a series
  55. of menu names; each one with a highlighted initial.  To select a menu
  56. simply type the ALT key at the same time as the initial of the menu
  57. you wish.  A menu will appear on the screen containing a list of functions
  58. for that menu.  Using the horizontal arrow keys will allow flipping 
  59. through each of the menus.

  61. A menu function may be selected in one of two ways.  First, by using
  62. the up and down arrow keys, move the cursor bar until it rests on top
  63. of the desired function and then press the ENTER key.  The second method
  64. is to simply type the highlighted character for the desired function.
  65. Each menu groups together related functions such as editing, printing, 
  66. viewing, etc.

  68. For an in depth discussion of the functions in this program, a printed
  69. reference manual is available upon registration - along with any
  70. technical assistance that may be required.
