- Main Menu Help
-
- This is the opening menu of TTYPRT. This are the options that you can do
- here, all by typing one letter:
-
- "F" - indicates that you want TTYPRT to read the text of the message from
- an external WordStar or ASCII file. TTYPRT will then ask for the filename.
-
- "E" - means that you want to enter the message text manually by means of
- the mini-text editor. You will immediately be placed in the editor. If the
- file "AUTOLOAD.MSG" exists, it will be loaded into the mini-editor as a
- template file.
-
- "L" - downloads the OCR-A 'softfont' to HP LaserJet-compatible printers.
- The softfont filename is requested and must be somewhere on path.
-
- "D" - displays a series of 6 screens that explain in greater detail the
- parts of this program. See also the written documentation or the .DOC file.
-
- "?" - shows this screen. Throughout TTYPRT, typing a "?" for a menu
- option will display a short help screen on the current menu selections.
-
- "<esc>" - immediately exits TTYPRT to DOS. Many menus have a <esc> (to DOS)
- option. All except this one requests confirmation of the exit command.
- :extread
- Input of an External File
-
- You have selected to read the message text from a external WordStar or ASCII
- file. You can enter a:
-
- filename to read, (include drive letter and/or path if not on the
- current drive and/or directory)
-
- "*" - Display a list of the filenames in the current directory,
-
- "." - Change to a different directory, or
-
- "<esc>" - Return back to the main menu.
-
- TTYPRT will search the complete path for any files not in the current
- directory before complaining that the file was not found.
- :edsave
- Saving text from the mini-editor
-
- You have asked to save the text in the mini-editor to a file or indicated that
- you are finished with the mini-editor. You can enter a:
-
- filename (include drive letter and/or path if not on the current drive
- and/or directory) to save the text into. If the file already exists, you will
- be asked to confirm that you wish to overwrite the old file.
-
- "*" - Display a list of the filenames in the current directory,
-
- "." - Change to a different directory, or
-
- "<esc>" - To either return to the mini-editor (if you just asked to save
- text) or to continue on to enter header information (if you were through with
- the mini-editor.) Note that you do not have to save the text from the mini-
- editor. TTYPRT will print the TTY with all the changes made in the
- mini-editor. However, any changes made in the editor and not saved can not
- be recalled for a subsequent run of TTYPRT.
- :edread
- Read an external file into the Mini-Editor.
-
- You have selected to read the message text from a external WordStar or ASCII
- file and insert it into the mini-editor starting at the current cursor
- location. You can enter a:
-
- filename to read, (include drive letter and/or path if not on the
- current drive and/or directory)
-
- "*" - Display a list of the filenames in the current directory,
-
- "." - Change to a different directory, or
-
- "<esc>" - Return back to the main menu.
-
- Note: The file will be inserted starting at current line of the message; any
- subsequent text in the mini-editor will be overwritten by the inserted file.
- :edabort
- Quitting from the mini-editor
-
- You have indicated you wish to abort TTYPRT from within the mini-editor. You
- can enter a:
-
- "Y" - To save the text in the mini-editor to a file and then abort to
- DOS. You will be prompted to enter a filename to save to.
-
- "N" - To exit directly to DOS, discarding a text in the mini-editor.
-
- "<esc>" - To change your mind and not abort, but return to mini-editor.
- :signblk
- Entering a code letter for a defined signature block
-
- A menu of signature blocks is shown at the top of the screen. To select any
- of these standard signature blocks, simply enter the highlighted letter.
- Entering any other letter (or an <enter>) will cause TTYPRT to prompt you
- to type the two signature block lines.
-
- To review the message text, either read from an external file or entered with
- the mini-editor, type an '='. You may enter (or return to) the mini-editor
- by typing an '!'.
-
- An "<esc>" will allow you to exit TTYPRT to DOS, you'll be asked for
- confirmation first.
- :prtdeflts
- Header and Printing Defaults
-
- All of the heading a printing parameters have default values. These defaults
- are:
- Classification = Unclassified
- Action Precedence = Routine
- Info Precedence = Routine
- Day Time Group = <blank>
- Print all pages including MFR, if present
-
- If all of these are what you want, type a "Y"; if not, type a "N".
-
- An "<esc>" will allow you to exit TTYPRT to DOS, you'll be asked for
- confirmation first.
-
- Note that a <enter> is assumed to be a "Y"es.
- :prtready
- Ready printer and start output
-
- All text, header and printer information has been entered. The header and
- printer information is shown on the screen.
-
- Check over the display to see if everything is the way you want it. If so,
- setup the printer for OCR-A printing (install the OCR thimble for the NEC or
- insert the OCR cartridge for the LaserJet or Kiss), insert a DD173 form, and
- strike an <enter> to start the print. TTYPRT will pause between pages so
- that you can insert forms for subsequent pages.
-
- If all is not ok, you can type an "R" to re-enter the header information.
-
- To review the message text, type an "=" and it will be displayed page-by-page.
-
- You may enter (or return to) the mini-editor by typing an '!'.
-
- An "<esc>" will allow you to exit TTYPRT to DOS, you'll be asked for
- confirmation first.
- :edhelp
- The mini-editor
-
- "Just type" - the mini-editor does word wrap at the right margin, cursor
- movement keys work as appropriate, and <F1> displays a help screen. If the
- file "AUTOLOAD.MSG" exists, it will be automatically loaded in the editor.
- Other files may be loaded with the <F6> key. Save the file with a <F5>.
-
- Line spacing AND CASE is ignored - TTYPRT automagically forces all text to
- upper case and double spaces everything. Although you may leave blank lines
- while entering text in the mini-editor, these will be deleted upon output.
-
- Address lines should begin at column 19 - the <tab> will automatically indent
- to this position. TTYPRT will retain any horizontal spacing entered in the
- editor. The mini-editor limits you to 68 characters per line. Use a <enter>
- to split lines and <BackSp> in column one to join lines. Lines longer than 68
- characters are automatically wrapped. An overwrite mode (the <ins> key) is
- available. The internal editor has a limit of 10 20-line pages, 200 lines).
-
- If you wish to use the MFR feature, end the message text with a '!' in column
- 1. Any additional text on this line will be ignored. All lines after the !
- will be considered the MFR. The MFR will be printed verbatim, TTYPRT will
- not change the case or line spacing. Like the message text, the MFR section
- is limited to 68 characters per line.

- TTY Print! General Help (screen 1/6)
-
- TTYPRT formats and outputs text for a DD173/2 (Joint Messageform.) Input may
- be entered directly using the internal mini-text editor or taken from a
- external ASCII or WordStar file. Several versions of the program are provided
- to formats the output various printers. (Currently: NEC spinwriter, QMS Kiss,
- HP LaserJet, and ALPS.) Header & trailer information is requested, and output
- appropriately in the correct locations. Support for MFRs is also provided.
- Optionally, signature block information may be predefined in an external file.
-
- Opening options:
-
- F -> reads an external WordStar or ASCII file and formats it to standard
- message format for printing on a DD173/2.
-
- E -> allows you to enter the message text directly into a mini-text
- editor. The input is then formatted to the standard message format.
-
- L -> downloads an OCR-A font to LaserJet-compatible printers
-
- D -> displays program description (what you are looking at now)
-
- <esc> -> to exit TTYPRT without any further action
-
- TTY Print! Header and Output Information (screen 2/6)
-
- After the message text is entered, a menu of standard signature blocks will
- be shown (if defined.) Select the code letter to use any of these blocks.
- <Enter> will request manual entry of the two signature block lines. The
- predefined signature blocks are read from the file "SIG_BLKS.DAT." If this
- file doesn't exist, you will have to enter the signature block manually.
-
- Enter classification. If Classified, a "CLASSIFIED BY" line will be requested.
- Enter "TO" and "INFO" precedences, <enter> for routine. Any entered letter is
- automatically doubled. Enter the day/time group - this entry is normally left
- blank. Enter starting and ending page - <enter> for both to print all pages
- and MFR. The current date is calculated automatically.
-
- Just before printing starts, you will be asked to confirm the header and
- output information entered. If any changes are needed, type a "R" to redo the
- entries.
-

-
-
-
-
-
- TTY Print! Input Conventions (screen 3/6)
-
- (apply to both external Word Processors and internal mini-editor)
-
- Line spacing AND CASE will be ignored - TTYPRT automatically forces all text
- to upper case and double spaces everything. Although you may leave blank
- lines for readability, these will be deleted upon output. Refer to the
- templates for standard margins and additional notes.
-
- If your wish to use the MFR feature, you must end the message text with a "!"
- in column 1. Anything after the ! will be considered the MFR. The MFR will
- be printed verbatim, TTYPRT will not change the case or lines spacing.
- The MFR section is not limited to any given line length, but lines longer than
- 80 characters will probably run off the edge of the paper when printed.
-
- Special formatting commands such as tabs, font selections, paragraph
- numbering, and paragraph styles are not supported and should not be used. If
- using WordPerfect, an ASCII file must be generated and fed to TTYPRT, the
- original WordPerfect file can not be read correctly.
-
-
-
-
-
- TTY Print! Using the Built-in Mini-Text editor (screen 4/6)
-
- "Just type" - the mini-editor does word wrap at the right margin, cursor
- movement keys work as appropriate, and <F1> displays a help screen. If the
- file "AUTOLOAD.MSG" exists, it will be automatically loaded in the editor.
- Other files may be loaded with the <F6> key.
-
- Address lines should begin at column 19 - the <tab> will automatically indent
- to this position.
-
- TTYPRT will retain any horizontal spacing entered in the editor. The mini-
- editor limits you to 68 characters per line. Use a <enter> to split lines and
- <BackSp> in column one to join lines. Lines longer than 68 characters are
- automatically wrapped. An overwrite mode (the <ins> key) is available.
-
- The internal mini-editor has a limit of 10 20-line pages, including MFR (200
- total lines).
-
- Upon exit from the mini-editor <F10>, TTYPRT will ask to save the input into a
- file. This is optional and not needed for printing a TTY. However, any text
- not saved will lost after the TTY is printed.
-
-
-
- TTY Print! Printing Help (screen 5/6)
-
- TTYPRT will pause before the first page is printed and after each page. You
- may exit the program with a "X" any of these points.
-
- HP LaserJet or Qume Kiss Printers: An OCR-A cartridge or the OCR-A soft font
- must be inserted or downloaded into the printer before any output is done. It
- is recommended that you single-sheet feed the DD173/2 forms through the
- "envelope" feeder. Pages are automatically ejected after printing.
-
- NEC Spinwriter Printers: The OCR thimble must be installed before printing.
- Each DD173/2 form and any carbons must feed and positioned into the printer
- before any output. Some practice may be needed to get the placement of the
- form "just right." The recommended starting place is:

- |X (the "UNCLASSIFIED" will be printed on the same line)

- TTY Print! Credits (screen 6/6)
-
- The original DD173/2 printer was called "Le Message" and was written for
- the Intel 310 and C70 by Michael Orlowicz (Oct 85) in UNIX BASIC. Adapted to
- MBASIC and TurboDOS (Mar 87), GWBASIC and MS-DOS (Nov 87) by Bob Bloom.
-
- Version 2 was converted to TurboPascal and compiled (May 88). Adapted
- to handle WordStar v5 files (Apr 89), and the HP LaserJet (May 90).
-
- Version 3 added external signature blocks, internal file entry support,
- the "mini-editor", combined both NEC and HP versions into one, added colors,
- and greatly expanded the help system. (Jun 90) Version 3.6 added the ability
- to download the OCR-A softfont to HP LaserJets or compatibles.
