Because there are hundreds of hieroglyphs, there are many ways to match hieroglyphs to our alphabet. The chart on the right shows one way of matching hieroglyphs to the letters in our alphabet. Egyptians did not have hieroglyphs that matched the letters C, U, V, or X. However, they did have a hieroglyph for the sound ch as in chicken.
