Crops cannot grow in the same soil every year unless the nutrients taken from the soil are replaced. Most modern farmers add fertilizer to the soil to replace the nutrients. In many ancient lands, people farmed until the nutrients were used up and then they moved. In ancient Egypt, however, the Nile flooded once a year.
