Transcription: preparing the site. The first step in the construction of a pyramid was choosing a site. The site was usually on the Nile's west bank. The four sides of the pyramid's square base had to face north, south, east, and west. Priests watched the stars to find north. Then the outline of the base was marked by pounding stakes into the ground. Next, workers cleared the site of dirt. When they reached they dug a network of trenches and filled it with water.
