The scientists could study only what they could reach and whatever fell to the ground. Today, scientists can reach the top layers of a rain forest in many ditterent ways. Some climb with ropes or use elevators attached to cranes. Others are carried by a kind of hot air balloon to the top of the rain forest and lowered to the canopy in an inflated raft.
