- The X-Files Start Button v1.1
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- Revisions since v1.0: Enhanced icons to make them look better
- --------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
-
- This program replaces Windows95's normal Start Button icon
- with an 'X'-Files replacement.
-
-
- WARRANTIES
-
- None! If you've changed your USER.EXE file previously, I
- cannot guarantee that the X-Start Button will install
- flawlessly. The install routine will ask you a few questions
- so just relax. If it doesn't work, there's an uninstall
- routine you can run.
-
- Oh yeah, one good thing to do whenever changing a file is to
- backup the file you're gonna me changing. So copy your USER.EXE
- file to a safe place.
-
- For the X-Start Button to work properly and not do damage to
- your USER.EXE file you must not be running a BETA version of
- Windows 95 (and you're probably not). Just to be sure, click
- on the My Computer icon on your desktop, and choose Properties.
- Make sure that your version of Windows95 is at least 4.00.950.
-
-
-
- HOW DO I INSTALL THE X-START BUTTON?
-
- Double-click on the INSTALL file (should have an X-File
- icon beside it) and then click YES. Windows95 will
- then drop to MS-DOS mode to allow the installation to
- change your USER.EXE. Windows95 will then reboot.
-
- PLEASE DON'T try to install the program by simply opening
- an MS-DOS box and running the XSTART.BAT file. You need to
- shut down in DOS mode all together since Windows95 is using
- USER.EXE while running.
-
- ANTI-VIRUS * Some virus checkers create innoculation files
- INFO that are used to indicate any unauthorized
- changes to executable files. Although this
- program makes a harmless modification to a key
- Windows95 system file, you may experience a
- false virus alert after installation. You may
- safely ignore such a warning provided it is
- limited to the file USER.EXE.

- PURCHASE INFORMATION :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
-
- If you like this mostly-trivial and useless modification
- to the Windows95 interface, e-mail it to everyone you
- know and drop the authors some e-mail while you're at it.
- **(The X-Start program is a modification of the MacOS-Start
- utility. If you wish to obtain a MacOS Start button, visit
- the WWW listed below or e-mail the original authors of the
- MacOS Start button changer)**
-
- You can also e-mail either myself (tmitchell@easynet.on.ca)
- or Ryan Thomas Ross (below) for instructions on how to modify
- the START button graphic yourself. For best results and
- quicker response time, include your favourite or most
- recently found Windows95 tip or trick.
