- The Spectrum Emulation FAQ
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The Most Frequently Asked Questions on comp.sys.sinclair: (In no particular
- order)
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- * 1. Where can I get Spectrum programs from?
-
- There are three sources:
-
- o The "official" one is ftp.nvg.unit.no, in the directory
- pub/sinclair/snaps. This contains public domain Spectrum
- snapshots - demos, magazine covertape programs and other public
- domain stuff.
-
- o The main "unofficial" one is ftp.ijs.si, in the directory
- pub/zx/snapshots. This is by far the largest, containing many
- megabytes of Spectrum software, but currently seems to be
- defunct. None of the directories have been updated since
- September 15th 1994.
-
- o A smaller alternative site exists in Chile at ftp.dcc.uchile.cl,
- but most of the time it's unbearably slow for anyone not in the
- western hemisphere.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- * 2. What machines can I run Spectrum emulators on?
-
- IBM PCs, Amigas, Atari STs, Macintoshes, Archimedes (Archimedi?) and
- X-terminals
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- * 3a. Where can I get Spectrum emulators from?
-
- o IBM PC: src.doc.ic.ac.uk, in pub/packages/ibmpc/simtel/emulator.
- Here you can find JPP, SPEC-145 and Z80 v3.02 (shareware). Others
- available at ftp.nvg.unit.no, in pub/sinclair/utils/pc are the
- Irish emulator, the Polish emulator and the Spanish emulator. See
- below for detailed notes on each.
-
- o Amiga: ftp.nvg.unit.no, pub/sinclair/utils/amiga. Here you can
- find Peter McGavin's rather neat SPEC v2.07, as well as the older
- KGB emulator (v1.3), ZX-Spectrum v4.7 and ZXam v1.3. Again, see
- below for more information.
-
- o Atari ST: ftp.nvg.unit.no, pub/sinclair/utils/atari. Three
- emulators for you to try: Atari-Speccy, Atari-Spectrum and ZX_SP
- v2.07. Details below...
-
- o Apple Macintosh: ftp.nvg.unit.no, pub/sinclair/utils/other. One
- emulator only at present, although another's reportedly on its
- way: MacSpeccy v1.1 is it. Information can be found below.
-
- o Acorn Archimedes: ftp.nvg.unit.no, pub/sinclair/utils/arm. The
- one you want is MZX v1.10. See below for more info.
-
- * 3b. What about ZX81 / TS1000 emulators?
-
- There are three ZX81 / TS1000 emulators (IBM PC only), believe it or
- not, although there are no ZX81 program archives. Once again, you can
- get them from ftp.nvg.unit.no in pub/sinclair/utils/pc. The files are
- TS1000-C.ZIP, ZX81.ZIP and XTENDR093.ZIP (the latter being rather
- better).
-
- * 3c. Are there emulators of other Sinclair machines? Unfortunately,
- no. Perhaps somebody can do something about this? (hint, hint)
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- * 4. I want Mutant Zombie Alien Apocalypse. Where can I get it from?
-
- o Step 1: Search the Canonical Snapshot List for the game's title.
- o Step 2: Look on ftp.ijs.si before doing anything else. Then look
- on ftp.nvg.unit.no.
- o Step 3: If all else fails, post a message to comp.sys.sinclair.
- Emphasize that you cannot find it on ftp.ijs.si or in the CSL.
- Somebody might have it and send it to you, but if it is really
- obscure this is less likely.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- * 5. I want to have a real Sinclair machine. Where can I get one from?
-
- Amstrad no longer make them and Sinclair no longer exists, so it's
- impossible to buy them new. The best place for non-UK people is
- probably Computer Cavern of Marlow, Bucks, who sell reconditioned
- Speccies for between £20-£50 (depending upon the model). UK residents
- are probably best served by going to their local car boot sales. Huge
- numbers of Spectrums were sold in the UK, so they turn up extremely
- regularly, for anything between £1 (the rubber-keys 48K) to £40
- upwards. As a general rule, try not to pay more than about £30, and
- give the machine a good inspection first. (Does it rattle unhealthily?
- Are any of the ports visibly damaged? Does it have all the usual
- leads?)
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- * 6a. Where can I get documentation on Spectrum programs?
-
- The best place is (as ever) ftp.nvg.unit.no, in the directory
- pub/sinclair/docs/instructions where yours truly has put about 150
- instruction files for many popular Spectrum games. If you want to
- upload some yourself, please try to stick to the same basic formula
- (i.e. game name, publisher, date, storyline, how-to-play, keys and if
- possible, original magazine comment).
-
- * 6b. What about Spectrum technical documents?
-
- Try consulting the Spectrum Technical FAQ - it contains a lot of info
- and has links to other files held at ftp.nvg.unit.no in
- pub/sinclair/spectrum/docs.
-
- * 6c. What about info on the other Sinclair machines?
-
- Apart from a five-part QL FAQ held at ftp.nvg.unit.no in
- pub/sinclair/docs/qlfaq, I'm afraid there isn't much. This may be
- rectified in the future. The original ZX81 manual has a chance of
- appearing here in 1995, but that's strictly a medium-term goal.
