- INTRODUCTION
- ______________________________________________________________
-
- Thank you for trying this software--PC-Bartender. I hope you
- find it to be useful and fun, and that you learn about some
- tasty new drinks!
-
- We've tried to make this software as easy-to-use as possible,
- essentially all you have to do is point and click. For example,
- if you are planning a party and want to mix up enough Margaritas
- for 20 people, a few clicks of your mouse and you can convert
- the recipe to one that serves 20--and all of the measurements
- will be converted to the most convenient form. What was measured
- in ounces for one drink is now shown as cups and pints when
- scaled up to twenty people.
-
- I'll start be describing how to install PC-Bartender; then go
- over a quick summary of the features in the software. This will
- be followed by a detailed description of how to use each feature.
- Although you can probably figure out how to use the software
- without reading this manual, everything you need to know is here,
- if you need it.
-
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS___________________________________________
-
- To use this software you must have an IBM compatible computer
- that is running Windows version 3.1 or higher.
-
- A hard disk with at least 2.4mb of free space is required.
-
- A printer is recommended if you wish to print copies of recipes.
-

-
-
- INSTALLATION
- ______________________________________________________
-
- You may install PC-Bartender For Windows either from the DOS
- prompt or while using Windows.
-
- INSTALLING AT THE DOS PROMPT
-
- Place the floppy disk in your "A" disk drive. If the disk goes
- in the "B" drive, replace the letter "A' with the letter "B"
- throughout these instructions. Get the "A>" prompt on the
- screen, type INSTALL and push ENTER. Follow the directions that
- appear on the screen when you are asked to enter a drive and
- path.
-
-
- INSTALLING USING WINDOWS
-
- Place the floppy disk in your "A" disk drive. If the disk goes
- in the "B" drive, replace the letter "A' with the letter "B"
- throughout these instructions. Go to the Program Manager screen
- and click on "File" to display the File Menu. Then, on this
- menu, click on "Run". This will display the Run box.
-
- Next click on the "Browse" button, set the drive to the "A"
- drive, and then double click on "INSTALL.EXE" in the Filename
- box. This will return you to the Run box. Click on "OK" and
- then follow the directions that appear on the screen.
-
- The software requires almost 1.6mb of disk space, and must be
- installed on a hard disk. You can not use this software on a
- floppy disk. If you'd like to save some disk space, you can
- erase the VBRUN300.DLL file, if this file is already in the
- SYSTEM subdirectory of your WINDOWS directory. Many other
- programs use this file, and it may already be installed on your
- hard disk.
-
- Should you install the PCB software a second time, when it asks
- you whether you want to overwrite a file, push "N" for no.
- Overwriting files may cause some the existing recipe files to be
- replaced by the original files on the floppy disk.

-
-
-
-
- GETTING STARTED
- ________________________________________________________________
-
- PC-Bartenter has three basic functions:
-
- 1) Search for and select drink recipes.
-
- 2) Enter new recipes and edit existing drink recipes.
-
- 3) Convert and adjust the amount of ingredients used in a recipe.
-
-
- Selecting A Recipe To View______________________________________
-
- There are two screens in PC-Bartender that you will be using the
- most. THe first of these is the one that is displayed when the
- software is started. This screen has three boxes: "Select A
- Drink", "Search", and "Type Of Drink To Show". We'll start by
- looking at the "Select A Drink" box.
-
- The "Select A Drink" box shows a list of all drink recipes. To
- see the recipe for a drink, double click on the name of the
- drink.
-
- The "Select A Drink" box displays the names of ten drinks at a
- time. To see additional drinks use the the slider on the right
- side of the box. You can also use the up/down cursor keys to
- move the blue scroll bar up and down through the list of drinks.
- When the scroll bar reaches the top or bottom of the list, the
- list will scroll up or down to show additional drinks (unless you
- are at the end of the listing).
-
- For the cursor keys to work, the "Select A Drink" box must be
- selected as the active box. This is indicated by a yellow border
- around the scroll bar. Let's take a look at an example. Put the
- mouse cursor on the round button next to "Both" in the "Type Of
- Drink To Show Box". Then click the left mouse button. (Do this
- even if the "Both" option is already selected). Notice that a
- box appears around the word "Both". This indicates that the
- "Type Of Drink To Show" box is now active and pushing the cursor
- keys will select among the three options.
-
- Now put the cursor on the blue scroll bar in the "Select A Drink"
- box and click the left mouse button. Notice tha a fuzzy,
-
- _______________________________________________ PC-BARTENDER - 4
-
-
- yellowish border appears around the outside edges of the scroll
- bar. Pushing the cursor now will move the scroll bar in the
- "Select A Drink" box.
-
- In some cases you will see the name of a drink listed twice in
- the "Select A Drink" box. This means that there is both a
- cocktail and a mocktail (no-alcohol) recipe for that drink. If
- several variations are included for a drink, they will be
- identified by having the terms "Variation One", "Variation Two",
- etc. included as a part of the name of the drink.
-
-
- Viewing A Drink Recipe__________________________________________
-
- To see the recipe for a drink, use the scroll bar to highlight
- the name of the drink and then click on the "View" button. You
- can also display a recipe by double clicking on the name of the
- drink.
-
- Notice that the names of each button include an underline letter.
- You can push a button, without using a mouse, by holding down the
- ALT key and pushing the letter that is underlined.
-
-
- The name of the drink, the type, and the recommended type of
- glass for serving the drink will always be shown at the top of
- the screen. The ingredients, and the quanities required will be
- shown in a box just below them. And below that is the box giving
- the directions for mixing the drink.
-
- The controls on the right side of the screen allow you to modify
- the recipe.
-
-
- Recipe Size_____________________________________________________
-
- The upper right corner of the screen has a box titled "Serves".
- When a recipe is first displayed the recipe will be sized to
- serve one person. You can change this by clicking on the Up
- Arrow in this box to increase the number of people served.
- Clicking on the Down Arrow decreases the number of people served.
-
- You can also change the number directly by clicking inside the
- box containing the number of people that can be served. A cursor
- bar will appear and you can use the Del key to delete the number
- that is already there and replace it with a new number. PC-
- Bartender can adjust recipes so they serve anywhere from one
- person up to 999 people.
-
-
-
- _______________________________________________ PC-BARTENDER - 5
-
-
- English/Metric Units_________________________________________
-
- PC-Bartender can display recipes using either English or metric
- measurements. To change the setting, click on the button for the
- measurement method you want to use.
-
-
- Cocktail/Mocktail____________________________________________
-
- Some of the drink recipes in PC-Bartender have both cocktail
- (includes alcohol) and mocktail (taste alike, no-alcohol version)
- recipes. If the recipe that is being displayed includes alcohol,
- the "Cocktail" button will have a black dot in it. If the recipe
- being displayed does not include alcohol the black dot will be in
- the "Mocktail" button.
-
- You can switch between the cocktail and mocktail version of a
- drink by clicking on appropriate button. If a button is shown in
- gray, then there is no version of the recipe for that type of
- drink.
-
-
- View A Drink Screen - Push Buttons_______________________________
-
- Clicking on the "Top" push button will display the recipe for the
- first drink in the list.
-
- Clicking on the "Bottom" push button will display the recipe for
- the last drink in the list.
-
- Clicking on the "Previous" button will display the recipe for the
- drink that come just before the one currently being displayed.
-
- Clicking on the "Next" button displays the recipe for the drink
- that is listed immediately after the drink that is currently
- displayed.
-
- The "Edit" button let's you modify the information in a recipe.
- I'll discuss the feature in more detail later.
-
- The "Print Drink" button will print a copy of the recipe
- currently being displayed. BE SURE YOUR PRINTER IS TURNED ON,
- HAS PAPER IN IT, AND IS ON-LINE.
-
- Click on the "OK" button to leave this screen and return to the
- screen used to select a drink.
-
-
- _______________________________________________ PC-BARTENDER - 6
-
- When PC-Bartender is first started it will display the names of
- all of the available drinks. You can reduce the number of drinks
- in various ways. For example, you can tell the software to just
- display the names of cocktails (drinks containing alcohol).
-
-
- Type Of Drink To Show__________________________________________
-
- The "Type of Drink to Show" box let's you limit the listing of
- drink names to just one type. Click on the "Cocktail" button to
- list just those drinks that contain alcohol. Click on the
- "Mocktail" button to list just the drinks that do not contain
- alcohol. To get a complete listing, click on the "both" button.
-
-
- Searches_______________________________________________________
-
- The "Search" box provides a way for you to create a specific
- listing of drinks. There are four ways you can search for drink
- recipes.
-
-
- Search By Name_________________________________________________
-
- This search will list all drinks that contain a specified word or
- phrase in their name. To start this type of search click on the
- "By Name" button, and then type in the word or phrase you want to
- find. All matching drink names will be listed in the "Select A
- Drink Box".
-
- Here's an example. Let's say you want to find the recipe for
- IRISH COFFEE. Start by clicking on the "By Name" button. Then
- enter "Coffee". You could enter "Irish Coffee", but the software
- can find any word contained within a drink name. By entering
- just "Coffee" you'll find the drink you want and you may spot
- something else that looks interesting. Now either push the ENTER
- key or click on the "Do Search" button. A list of all drinks
- that contain the word "Coffee" will be display. You can select
- an view a recipe as described in the previous section.
-
-
- Search By Ingredients___________________________________________
-
- You can search all of the recipes in PC-Bartender to find those
- that include a specific ingredient. To do this click on the "By
- Ingredient" button and then type in the name of the ingredient
- you want. The software will then list the names of all of the
- drinks that include that ingredient.
-
- _______________________________________________ PC-BARTENDER - 7
-
-
- Search By Drink Type____________________________________________
-
- The third way to search for drinks is by drink type. When you
- click on the "By Drink Type" button a box, containing the drink
- type currently selected will appear. Click on the arrow that is
- on the right side of the box (or push ALT- and the Down Cursor
- key). This will display a list of the various drink types. Use
- the scroll bar to highlight the type of drink you want, and then
- push ENTER. Or just double click on the drink type you want to
- list. All of the drinks of that type will then be listed in the
- "Select A Drink Box".
-
-
- Search By Inventory Available__________________________________
-
- The last search will give you a list of all the drinks you can
- make with the ingredients you have on hand. Just click on the
- "By Inventory Available" button to get this listing.
-
- In order for this search to work you need to be using PC-
- Bartender to keep an inventory of available ingredients. The
- "Inventory" button on the right side of the screen is used to
- switch the software into the inventory mode.
-
-
- Ingredient Inventory___________________________________________
-
- The ingredient inventory is used to help you keep track of the
- drink ingredients you have on hand. You should enter all
- ingredients that make up a drink, not just the various liquors.
- Include ingredients such as limes, orange juice, cream, etc.
-
- To enter an item into the inventory, click on the "Add" button.
- This will display the "Inventory Edit" window with three boxes.
- Type in the quanity, the container information, and a description
- of the inventory item.
-
- The quanity is the number of bottles, pints, quarts, etc. that
- you have.
-
- The information that goes in the "Container" box describes the
- container, if there is one. Containers might be "one-quart
- bottles", or "box of one-dozen" (for eggs).
-
- The "Inventory Item" is a description of the item.
-
-
- _______________________________________________ PC-BARTENDER - 8
-
-
- PC-Bartenter comes with a few examples entered in the inventory
- to give you and idea of the type of information that is entered.
-
- Once you have entered the information for an item, click on "OK"
- to save it in the inventory.
-
- An inventory item can be deleted by highlighting it with the
- scroll bar and clicking on the "Delete" button.
-
- Any of the inventory items can be edited by highlighting it with
- the scroll bar, and then clicking on the "Edit" button. This
- will display the same window you saw when entering a new item,
- except that the information from the highlighted item will be
- shown.
-
- To exit from the Inventory window click on the "Exit" button.
-
-
- Terms And Substitutes____________________________________________
-
- Back on the opening screen, just below the "Inventory" button,
- there is a button titles "Terms/Subst". Click on this button to
- see a list of terms and definitions. A substitution box, located
- below the definitions box, shows what can be used as a substitute
- if a recipe calls for the highlighted item and you don't have it
- available.
-
- You can quickly skip around in the list of definitions by pushing
- the first letter of the word you want to see defined. This will
- cause the list to jump directly to the first item that begins
- with that letter.
-
- To leave this screen click on the "Exit" button.
-
-
- Adding A New Recipe____________________________________________
-
- The "Add" a recipe and edit a recipe features are essentially the
- same. To add a recipe click on the "Add" button on the opening
- screen. This will display a blank recipe edit window titled
- "Edit A Drink Recipe". I'll discuss each of the boxes on this
- screen, one at a time.
-
- The cursor will be in the top box, "Drink Name". Start by typing
- in the name of this drink.
-
-
- _______________________________________________ PC-BARTENDER - 9
-
-
- Next click on the "Drink Type" box. This will display a list of
- drink types. Select the type that is appropriate for this drink
- by putting the cursor on it and double clicking.
-
- (Type in new type??)
-
- If you wish to specify a type of glass to be used, click on the
- "Glass" box, scroll through the list until you find the type of
- glass you want to specify, then double click on it.
-
- The next box is titled "Other Drink (Cocktail/Mocktail)". PC-
- Bartender allows you to link drink recipes so that when a
- cocktail recipe is displayed, you can immediately switch to the
- recipe for the mocktail version of that drink. It also works the
- other way. If a mocktail recipe is displayed, you can
- immediately switch to the cocktail version of the recipe. This
- link is established by using this box to specify which drinks
- should be linked.
-
- Here's how you would enter two drinks that are to be linked:
-
-
- Establishing Recipe Links_____________________________________
-
- 1) Enter the complete recipe for the cocktail version of the
- drink.
-
- 2) Enter the complete recipe for the mocktail version of the
- drink. Then click on the "Other Drink (Cocktail/Mocktail)" box
- to display the list of drinks. Find and double click on the name
- of the drink recipe you just entered in step one. This
- establishes the link from the second recipe to the first. Save
- this recipe by clicking on the "Update" button.
-
- 3) On the Main Screen find the drink entered in step one, and
- view this recipe. On the "View a Drink Recipe" window click on
- the "Edit" button. This will display a screen that looks like
- and functions just like the screen used to enter a new drink.
- Click on the "Other Drink (Cocktail/Mocktail)" box to display the
- list of drinks. Find and double click on the drink entered in
- step one. This establishes the link from the first recipe to the
- second. Save this recipe by clicking on the "Update" button.
-
- Thanks how to link two drinks together. Now let's finish going
- over how to enter a new drink.
-
-
- _______________________________________________ PC-BARTENDER - 10
-
-
- Entering Ingredients___________________________________________
-
- The main part of the screen used to enter a new drink is taken up
- by a box titled "Edit Ingredients". This box includes an "Add",
- "Edit" and "Delete" button. To add an ingredient to the recipe,
- click on the "Add" button.Ingredients are added one at a time.
- This gives the software the time it needs to set up the
- quantities portion of the ingredient so that it can easily by
- converted to larger quanties or other units of measurement.
-
- When you click on the "Add" button, a new window will open. The
- top section of this window is used to enter the amount of the
- ingredient to be included in the recipe. If you have set the
- software for English units, you will see a large box, a smaller
- one to the right, and then a slash and another box to the right
- of that. English amounts are always entered using fractions.
- For example, to enter 1-1/2 ounces, type the number "1" and push
- enter. This will move the cursor to the next box. Then type the
- number "1" again. (This is the "1" part of the fraction "1/2").
- Push ENTER. Finally enter the number "2" and push ENTER. The
- amount has now been entered.
-
- In the "Unit" box you can type in any unit of measurement you'd
- like. This box also provides a list of measurements. If you
- want the software to recognize the measurement and be able to
- convert it to other units, you'll need to select a unit of
- measurement from the list.
-
- Next click on the "Ingredient Name" box and type in the name of
- the ingredient.
-
- Click on the "OK" button to enter this ingredient into the
- recipe. This will close the "Edit Ingredient" box. You'll now
- be back at the "Edit A Drink Recipe" window and you can enter the
- next ingredient.
-
- You can edit an ingredient that has already been entered in the
- recipe by highlighting it with the scroll bar and then clicking
- on the "Edit" button.
-
- You can delete an ingredient from the recipe by highlighting it
- with the scroll bar and clicking on the "Delete" button.
-
-
- _______________________________________________ PC-BARTENDER - 11
-
-
- Recipe Directions_______________________________________________
-
- The final step in entering a drink recipe is to type in the
- directions. Put the cursor in the "Directions" box and push the
- left mouse button. The cursor will move to the "Directions" box.
- You can now type in the instructions to be followed to mix this
- drink.

- Editing A Recipe_______________________________________________
-
- Editing a recipe is done in almost exactly the same way as
- entering a new recipe--the exact same screen is used. The only
- difference is that when you are editing and existing recipe, the
- "Edit A Drink Recipe" screen will contain the information for
- that recipe when it is displayed.
-
- To edit a recipe you'll first need to display the recipe using
- the "View a Drink Recipe" window. Then click on the "Edit"
- button to go to the "Edit A Drink Recipe" window. You can now
- replace, edit, type over, or select new information for this
- recipe.
-
- When you have made all the changes you want to make, click on the
- "Update" button to update the recipe file and save the modified
- recipe.
-
-
- Delete A Recipe__________________________________________________
-
- A recipe can be completely deleted from the drink file by going
- to the Main Screen; use the scroll bar to highlight the recipe to
- be deleted; then click on the "Delete" button.
