- Installation and Performance
- Welcome
- *cLThank you for purchasing Simply 3D software. Simply 3D is designed to offer
- *2Jan easy but extremely powerful three dimensional environment in which full
- *2Kcolor still images and camera animations can be created. More importantly,
- *2GSimply 3D offers a smooth upgrade path from 2D drawing programs such as
- *2JCorelDRAW! and Adobe Illustrator by allowing you to load drawings from the
- *24AI file format and extrude them to create 3D shapes.
- The Simply 3D CD includes:
- Renderize Live EZ
- 3. A complete and highly intuitive 3D rendering and
- Eanimation application that allows you to compose objects in 3D space,
- *2Lassign material, lighting and camera effects, and generate full-color output
- *27to most of the common image and animation file formats.
- Visual Font
- 8. A simple utility that extrudes and bevels any Windows
- KTrueType fonts to create true 3D objects. These objects can then be loaded
- *2Cinto Renderize Live EZ and composed with other objects in 3D space.
- Visual Catalog
- =. Organize your work in catalogs to facilitate the recycling
- Hof 3D scenes, objects, material and images from previous projects. Drag
- *2Jand drop resources from Visual Catalog to other applications in the Visual
- Reality product suite.
- *B 3DClipART
- 6. This CD library includes over 100 3D objects and 70
- Gseamless bitmap textures. Additional libraries are also available from
- Visual Software.
- tKRenderize Live EZ is the centerpiece of Simply 3D. Renderize Live EZ loads
- *2?and extrudes AI and WMF files from CorelDRAW! and other drawing
- *2Jpackages, as well as extruded font objects from Visual Font and 3D objects
- *2Hfrom the ClipART CD. These objects can be composed together in 3D space
- *2Oand rendered with a wide variety of material attributes. Materials can include
- *2Mseamless textures from the ClipART CD, or using any image in a supported file
- *2Oformat, and you can control opacity, shininess and reflections as well. Light
- *2Jyour scene with any variety and number of light sources, and control light
- *26colors, intensity and shadows for a realistic effect.
- *AMVisual Catalog allows you to organize and view all of the different resources
- *2Mthat make up a rendering: views, objects, materials and images. Resources in
- *2HVisual Catalog can be transferred into Renderize Live EZ by dragging and
- dropping the desired resource.

- Using the Documentation
- *cIThe tutorial lessons in this User's Manual focus on the features found in
- *2LRenderize Live EZ. However, they also discuss how to operate Visual Font to
- *2Kload, extrude, bevel and save TrueType fonts as 3D objects, and how to drag
- *2Oand drop data from Visual Catalog. Regardless of your general familiarity with
- *2Hrendering applications, we recommend that you use the tutorials that are
- *2Hsupplied with Simply 3D before getting too deeply involved with your own
- *2Sprojects. The tutorials will teach you the nuances of the interface in addition to
- *2Mthe specific concepts and commands related to rendering. If you must jump in
- *2Lhead first and begin with your own projects, at least run the first tutorial
- *2P(Quickstart) before going off on your own, as this will give you a good overview
- *21of the layout of the Renderize Live EZ interface.
- Technical Support
- *cLVisual Software is pleased to offer free technical support to all registered
- *2ISimply 3D users. Call us at (818) 883-7900 weekdays between the hours of
- *2J8AM and 5PM Pacific time to speak to an applications support engineer. In
- *2Faddition, you can visit Visual Software on CompuServe by accessing the
- *2EAnimation Vendor A forum. Or, simply GO VISSOFT to access the Visual
- Software section directly.
- *AFIf you are a new Simply 3D user and you cannot get the software to run
- *2Scorrectly, we encourage you to read this chapter in its entirety before calling, in
- *2Iorder to confirm that your system has been properly configured to run the
- *2 software.
- *AMIf you have questions regarding the use or Simply 3D, we encourage you to run
- *2Fthrough the tutorial lessons before calling, in order to maximize your
- *2 familiarity with the software.
- Installing Simply 3D
- *cKThe entire Simply 3D package, including executables and tutorials, requires
- *2Happroximately 10.5MB of disk space. The executable programs and related
- *2Bfiles require about 5.5MB; the tutorial files require about 5MB.
- *ANStart Windows before beginning the installation process, and insert the Simply
- *3?3D CD into your CD-ROM drive. From the Program Manager select
- A File, Run
- Land type D:SETUP, then click the OK button to begin the installation process
- *2Nand follow the prompts. If your CD-ROM drive is not the "D" drive, substitute
- *26the appropriate drive letter during the setup process.
- Installation and Performance
- Times New Roman
- tPIf you perform a full installation, Renderize Live EZ, Visual Font, the tutorial
- *2Nfiles, and all animation players are installed onto your hard drive. A Simply
- *2J3D program group is created, and it includes icons to launch the Renderize
- *2KLive EZ and Visual Font applications, as well as the Media Player, Autodesk
- *2NAnimation Player and Visual Player animation playback utilities. In addition,
- *2Mseveral icons are created for the Simply 3D Interactive Demo. The files that
- *2Omake up the demo are not installed on the hard drive, so if you wish to run it,
- *28the Simply 3D CD must be installed in your CD-ROM drive.
- *ARNote that the object and texture libraries are not installed onto your hard drive.
- *2QIf you wish to load and object or texture into Renderize Live EZ, you can load it
- *2Ndirectly from the CD. If you wish to copy these files onto your hard disk, be
- *20aware that they require over 80MB of disk space.
- *Simply 3D Recommended System Configuration
- *cKThe applications that make up Simply 3D, Renderize Live EZ and Visual Font,
- *2Lare enhanced mode applications requiring a 80386 or 80486 microprocessor; if
- *2Gyou are running on a '386 then you must also have a math-coprocessor.
- *AHThe recommended system configuration is a 486 33MHz PC running DOS 5.0
- *29or DOS 6.x and Microsoft Windows 3.1 in Enhanced mode. A
- *2GWindows-compatible VGA display is required with a minimum resolution of
- *2N800x600 at 256 colors. Regardless of your display color depth, Renderize Live
- *2REZ still calculates and saves all renderings at 24-bits, and dithers the image for
- the 8-bit display.
- *ACSimply3D requires a minimum of 8MB of RAM and a permanent swap file
- *2J(virtual memory) of 20MB under Windows. If you have a 24-bit display, you
- *2Dmust have at least 12MB of memory to run Renderize Live EZ. You can
- *2Kactually run Renderize Live EZ with fewer resources, but you would probably
- *2 run out of memory quite quickly.
- *AJThe actual amount of system resources that you may require depends on many
- *2Mfactors, including the complexity of your model, the number and resolution of
- *2Nimage and reflect textures assigned to materials, the number of lights casting
- *2Lshadows, the map sizes of the shadows, and the resolution and color depth of
- *2(the image file that you are rendering.
- *ANThe following topics discuss those system configuration issues that may affect
- *2Mthe performance of Simply 3D. While it is not required that you make changes
- *2Mto your system configuration according to this information, it is recommended
- *2Nthat you review these issues in the event Simply 3D hangs up during operation.
- Installation and Performance
- Times New Roman
- Video Display
- *PGSimply 3D requires a minimum display resolution of 800x600, 256 colors,
- *2Lalthough we recommend that you run the software at 1024x768. If you wish to
- *2Nrun in a high color mode (either 64K colors or 16.7M colors), you must have at
- *2Oleast 12MB of RAM to run the applications effectively. Note that if you run at
- *2F64K colors, you may encounter "16 Get Bitmap Failed" error messages on
- *2Loccasion in Renderize Live EZ: this is a non-fatal error: simply dismiss the
- *2&error dialog box and continue working.
- *AKSimply 3D has been successfully tested with a wide variety of video display
- *2Qcards at all applicable resolutions and color depths. In fact, any compatibility
- *2Nissues lie not with the display card, but with the Windows drivers (DRV files)
- *2Rthat control the card. The quality of these drivers, shipped with and specific to
- *2Leach video board, vary widely from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you are
- *2Ehaving a driver compatibility problem, your software may crash with a
- *2L"General Protection Fault in Module <driver.drv>", where <driver.drv> is the
- *2Oname of the specific Windows video driver that is currently installed. If this
- *2Moccurs, change the display resolution or color depth at which you are running
- *2NWindows, as this usually installs a different driver which may be more stable.
- *2JYou can also contact your video card manufacturer to download or otherwise
- *2Preceive driver updates, if any are available for your card. In addition, please
- *2Ibring these kind of compatibility problems to the attention of the Visual
- *2CSoftware technical support department so that we can work with card
- *2%manufacturers to solve the problem.
- Disk Cache
- *PLA disk cache (such as SmartDrive) improves disk access speeds. Since Simply
- *2K3D uses virtual memory in a permanent swap file on disk, the disk cache can
- *2Ihave a large impact on performance by speeding access to the swap file.
- *AMSetting your disk cache size requires making some choices in order to balance
- *2Ethe need for maximum RAM with the need for fast access to the virtual
- *2Jmemory swap file on your hard drive. Any RAM allocated as a disk cache is
- *2Iremoved from the amount of RAM available to Windows. If you set up a 2MB
- *2LSmartDrive, you will enhance performance by speeding access to the swap file
- *2Kon disk. On the other hand, because you have reduced your available RAM by
- *2)2MB, more disk swapping needs to occur.
- *AGIf your system has 8MB of physical RAM, you should not set a disk cache
- *2Clarger than 1MB. Although a larger disk cache would improve system
- *2Operformance by speeding access to the swap file, it would reduce your available
- *2DXMS memory to a point where the Renderize Live EZ interface would no
- *2Klonger fit entirely into RAM, and therefore would need to be swapped. This
- *2Fwould dramatically increase the amount of swapping going on, adversely
- affecting system performance.
- Installation and Performance
- Times New Roman
- tMIf your system has 16MB of RAM, you can afford to set up a larger disk cache,
- *2Fperhaps 2MB or more. The degree to which a larger disk cache improves
- *2Lperformance depends on the performance of your hard disk and the size of the
- *2Oprojects you are working on. If you are working on small projects, the need to
- *2Puse the swap file is decreased, so it would be faster to run with a smaller disk
- *2Ccache. However, in larger projects where disk-swapping occurs more
- *2:frequently, a larger disk cache may increase performance.
- *d Swap File
- *PGBefore running Simply 3D, you must set up a swap file under Windows. A
- *2Pswap file is an area on your hard disk that acts as "virtual memory," increasing
- *2Kyour total available memory. Your physical RAM plus your swap file make up
- *2Cyour total available system memory. To optimize performance, it is
- *2Krecommended that you create a permanent swap file of at least 20MB. If you
- *2Iplan to work on complex projects, you may wish to increase swap file size
- significantly.
- *AOWindows uses several parameters to determine the size of the swap file that can
- *2Lbe set. First, the swap file must occupy contiguous space on the hard disk.
- *2JTherefore, you should run a disk defragmentation program (such as Norton's
- *2QSpeedDisk) before setting up the swap file. If your disk drive has strategically
- *2Lplaced bad sectors, this may limit the amount of swap space that can be set.
- *AMSecondly, the maximum swap file size is initially limited to 4X the amount of
- *2Hphysical memory available after Windows has been launched. The multiple
- *2Cthat is used in determining maximum swap space can be increased, if
- necessary, by adding the line
- PageOverCommit=n
- in the [386enh] section of
- tLthe Windows SYSTEM.INI file, where "n" is the multiple that you wish to use,
- *2Kbetween 2 and 20. In addition, this value determines the maximum amount of
- *2Itotal memory (RAM plus swap space) that can be recognized by Windows. To
- *2Seliminate this limitation once and for all, we suggest that you set the multiple to
- *2Kits maximum of 20, then set your swap space according to the amount of disk
- *2(space that you can afford to allocate.
- !Note: Your Simply 3D installation
- t3process automatically adds this line to SYSTEM.INI.
- *AMFinally, the default recommended swap file size is limited to 50% of the free
- *2Jspace available on your hard disk drive. You may type in a permanent swap
- *2Ofile size greater than 50% of the free space on your hard drive, and ignore the
- *2Iresulting warning message. However, you may not specify a swap file size
- *23greater than the maximum swap file size indicated.
- *AHTo create a swap file under Windows 3.1, launch Windows and select Main,
- *2EControl Panel, 386 Enhanced, Virtual Memory. Under this area Windows
- *2Odisplays the type and size of the current swap file. Select the Change command
- *2Pto modify the swap file. Make sure that the file type is set to Permanent. You
- *2Ncan enter in a swap file size up to the Maximum Size listed in the window. If
- *2Eyou enter a swap file size larger than the Recommended Size a warning
- Installation and Performance
- Times New Roman
- Mmessage will appear saying that Windows will not recognize the entire size of
- *2Kthat file: this message is erroneous regarding permanent swap files. Full
- *2?information on setting a swap file can be found in your Windows
- documentation.
- *AHThe minimum recommended swap file size to run the applications in Simply
- *2K3D is 20MB: however, the larger the swap file you can afford to define, the
- *2Nbetter off you are. Specifically, a larger swap file allows you to define and
- *2Qrender larger, more complex scenes. After setting the swap file size, be sure to
- re-launch Windows.
- High Memory
- *PJBecause of the way Windows uses memory, it is no longer necessary, or even
- *2Ndesirable, to maximize the amount of free conventional memory. In fact, using
- *2=DEVICEHIGH (in CONFIG.SYS) and LH (LoadHigh, in AUTOEXEC.BAT)
- *2Ito load drivers and programs into high memory not only doesn't change the
- *2Gavailable XMS memory, it can cause memory conflicts that can crash your
- *2Ksystem. The likelihood of problems occurring depends on a wide variety of
- *2Lfactors, including the programs being loaded, their location in high memory,
- *2Jand the BIOS of your computer. Therefore it is difficult to say whether a
- problem may actually occur.
- *A=There are two ways in which you can disable DEVICEHIGH and LH
- *2<commands. The simplest thing to do is disable or remove the
- *2CDEVICE=C:\[directory]\EMM386.EXE line from your CONFIG.SYS, as this
- *2Gmanages the use of the high memory area. When you disable EMM386, all
- *2LLH and DEVICEHIGH lines are still loaded, they are just loaded normally into
- low memory.
- *AMIf you run DOS applications on your computer that require the use of expanded
- *2Imemory, you won't want to disable the EMM386 line, as it is your expanded
- *2Amemory manager. If this is the case, you must modify each LH and
- *2<DEVICEHIGH line individually. A CONFIG.SYS line that reads:
- Courier New
- I(DEVICEHIGH /L:1,14512 =C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
- %Should be changed such that it reads:
- DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
- An AUTOEXEC.BAT line that reads:
- I LH /L:2,32336 C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.COM
- %Should be changed such that it reads:
- C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.COM
- KIf you do run DOS applications in addition to Windows applications and need
- *2Cto maximize your conventional memory using DEVICEHIGH and LH, it is
- Installation and Performance
- Times New Roman
- tLhighly recommended that you create a multiple boot configuration so that you
- *2Fcan have a simple configuration for when you run Windows, and the high
- *27memory configuration for when you run DOS applications.
- *AJNote that it is OK, and recommended to load DOS into high memory using the
- *2,DOS=HIGH,UMB command in the CONFIG.SYS file.
- TSR and Auto-Launch Programs
- *PIThe Simply 3D applications are true 32-bit applications, and although the
- *2H32-bit Windows DPMI memory model should not conflict with other programs
- *2Lthat may be loaded into memory, problems sometimes do occur. It is strongly
- *2Irecommended that you limit the number of programs that run simultaneously
- *2Lwith Simply 3D. Specifically, TSR (terminate and stay resident) programs or
- *2<applications that work in the background may cause problems.
- *AIThe first place to look for TSR's is in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Don't be
- *2Iconcerned with drivers or programs that control standard hardware devices
- *2Ksuch as mice, hard drives, CD ROM drives or sound cards. Instead, focus on
- *2Qutility programs that sit in the background and wait for a "hot key", or poll the
- *21system for a predetermined date, time or event.
- *AJSimilarly, check the LOAD and RUN lines in your WIN.INI file (found in the
- *2F\WINDOWS directory) for similar TSR programs. For example, PIM's that
- *2Qpoll for a specific date and time, or auto-receive fax utilities that wait for an
- *2Dincoming call can cause problems. Many other programs, such as the
- *2AWindows Clock or Calendar, or Adobe Type Manager, or screen saver
- *2Jprograms, should not cause a problem. Finally, look for a Startup Program
- *2IGroup under Windows to see what applications or utilities may be launched
- *2&automatically when you launch Windows.
- *d(Sample AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS Files
- *PBThe following AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files represent a sample
- *2Mconfiguration under which the Simply 3D applications run efficiently on a CPU
- *2Gwith 8MB of RAM in a 256 color video display mode. This is a "stripped
- *2?down" configuration: your configuration may vary significantly.

- &Operating Simply 3D With Other Windows
- Applications
- *cFMultiple applications can be launched under Windows at any given time.
- *2KHowever, because Renderize Live EZ and Visual Font are 32-bit applications,
- *2Oand most other applications are 16-bit, it is possible that launching and using
- *2L16-bit applications may corrupt or fragment the memory used by the Simply 3D
- *2Kapplications. Unfortunately, not enough information is currently available
- *2Kregarding the simultaneous use of 16- and 32-bit applications under Windows
- *2L3.1. Therefore, if you run other applications simultaneously with Renderize
- *2KLive EZ and Visual Font, be sure to take care and save your work regularly.
- *AIRemember that programs can be loaded or run automatically when you launch
- *2KWindows. If you are having problems with Renderize Live EZ or Visual Font,
- *2Mopen the WIN.INI file and see if any programs are specified in the "Load" and
- *2*"Run" lines at the beginning of that file.
- %Launching Programs from the Simply 3D
- Program Group
- *cEAssuming you perform a full installation, the Simply 3D Program Group
- *2Lcontains icons to launch the Renderize Live EZ and Visual Font applications,
- *2Has well as the Media Player, Autodesk Animation Player and Visual Player
- *2Danimation playback utilities. Each of these programs is executed by
- *2Cdouble-clicking on the desired icon in the Simply 3D Program Group.
- *2NEverything needed to run these programs is installed on the hard drive, so the
- *2@Simply 3D CD does not need to be installed in your CD-ROM drive.
- (Launching the Simply 3D Interactive Demo
- *cGThe Simply 3D Program Group also includes several icons that launch the
- *2GSimply 3D Interactive Demo. To run this demo, the Simply 3D CD must be
- installed in your CD-ROM drive.
- *AIThere are several ways to run the demo. If you select the Simply 3D Demo
- *2M(CD) icon, the entire demo is run from the CD. Using this option, sounds and
- *2Janimations may not play back in real time, depending on the speed of your
- *2DCD-ROM drive. If you select the Simply 3D Demo (HD) icon, sound and
- *2Janimation files are copied to temporary files on your hard disk to improve
- Installation and Performance
- Times New Roman
- tMplayback performance. These files require about 18MB of free disk space, and
- *2&are deleted when the demo is complete.
- +Using Objects and Textures from the ClipART
- Library
- *cKThe 3D ClipART Library includes about 100 3D models, stored in the GED file
- *2Iformat, and about 70 seamless bitmap textures, saved as 24-bit TGA files.
- *2JThese objects and images cannot be copied and distributed, but they can be
- *2Iincorporated into renderings and the resulting images distributed with no
- infringement of copyright.
- *ALThe CD contains a little over 7MB of 3D object data, and about 78MB of image
- *2Ltexture data. These files are not installed onto your hard drive during the
- *2Kinstallation process. Therefore you must insert the Simply 3D CD into your
- *2LCD-ROM drive and log to that drive to load the desired objects and images.
- *ADModels are loaded into Renderize Live EZ using the File, Load Object
- *2Jcommand from the Menu Bar. Images are loaded into Renderize Live EZ using
- *2-the File, Load Image command on the Menu Bar.
