  36. WHAT IS PLUG-IN FOR WINDOWS?

  38.   Plug-In Fills the holes in Windows!

  40.   Plug-In is an enhancement utility for Windows.  It seamlessly integrates
  41.   with Windows and works with any Windows Desktop.  Plug-In feels like a
  42.   natural extension of Windows...

  44.   It is Winner of Windows Magazine's Win 100 Award (1993 & 1994)
  45.   and Byte Magazine's / Jerry Pournelle's User's Choice Award (1992 & 1993).

  91. WHAT IS NEW IN PLUG-IN FOR WINDOWS, VERSION 2?

  93.   Lots!  In fact, there is so much new functionality that it could be
  94.   considered a new product.  It has all the features of Plug-In 1.x, plus
  95.   the following:

  97.   - Plug-In now works with any Windows Desktop ... but we didn't forget
  98.     those who use Program Manager!  New in Plug-In V2 is full support
  99.     for nested groups!
  100.  
  101.   - Title bar display of date/time/resources/stopwatch, etc.  This is
  102.     VERY configurable to suit your needs
  103.  
  104.   - Greatly enhanced QuickRun menu.  Accessible from any application by
  105.     clicking on the "Power Button" in the titlebar.  Also, you can click 
  106.     your right-mouse-button on the Windows desktop to active the QR menu.
  107.  
  108.   - Full Sound support.  If you have a sound card, you're in for a treat!
  109.     Assign sounds to application events, talking clocks, chimes, InstaSound
  110.     shortcut key, etc.

  112.   - Custom Cursors have been enhanced to include the I-Beam as well as the
  113.     other standard cursors.  You can also invert and wrap the cursor at the
  114.     screen edge.

  116.   - A powerful Alarm and Scheduling facility allows you to keep track of 
  117.     appointments and schedule programs to run at specific times.  The
  118.     configuration settings for each alarm is very complete, including
  119.     repeating alarms, sounds, etc.

  121.   - The Resource Alerts have been enhanced to include custom dialogs.  In
  122.     addition to system resources and memory, you can now monitor free disk
  123.     space.

  125.   - Screen Saver hotspots and instant-on shortcut key.

  127. INSTALLATION NOTES
  128.  
  129.   Once you have unarchived (or copied) all of Plug-In's files to a
  130.   directory on your hard disk (e.g., C:\PLUGIN), run PLUGIN.EXE from 
  131.   Windows.  Plug-In has a built-in install program which will copy
  132.   a few small files to the Windows directory and create the 
  133.   initialization file. 
  134.  
  135.   If you are updating an existing version of Plug-In, see the next
  136.   section.
  137.  
  138. INSTALLING OVER A PREVIOUS VERSION OF PLUG-IN
  139.  
  140.   NOTE:  If you are installing from Plug-In's master diskette (which
  141.          you receive when you purchase Plug-In), simply run INSTALL.EXE
  142.          from the diskette (Hint:  Use Plug-In's Install Application
  143.          feature!).  
  144.          
  145.          If you are installing by using the "freely distributable" software,
  146.          please read these notes:
  147.  
  148.   1) If you already have a version of Plug-In running on your system, you
  149.      must first shut it down before running the new version of Plug-In V2!
  150.  
  151.      For Plug-In 1.x, select "Options | Configure Plug-In | Shutdown" from
  152.                       Program Manager's menus
  153.  
  154.      For Plug-In 2.x, select "Shutdown Plug-In" from the Plug-In 
  155.                       Control Center dialog (double-click on the 
  156.                       Power Button, or select Configure Plug-In from 
  157.                       the QuickRun menu.
  158.  
  159.   2) UnArchive Plug-In V2.  You can overwrite the existing Plug-In
  160.      files if you wish.  
  161.  
  162.      PLEASE NOTE:  If you are updating over an existing installation of
  163.                    Plug-In V2, you might get a message such as "unable
  164.                    to copy" or "sharing violation" while trying to overwrite
  165.                    PISYS200.DLL.  You should just bypass this file and
  166.                    continue extracting the rest of the archive.  There
  167.                    have not been any functional changes to PISYS200.DLL,
  168.                    so there is no need to update the file.  As an 
  169.                    alternative, you can hold the SHIFT key down while
  170.                    selecting "Yes" from the MessageBox that asks, "Are
  171.                    you sure you wish to Shutdown Plug-In?".  This will 
  172.                    force a full unload of PISYS200.DLL from memory.
  173.  
  174.   3) Run PLUGIN.EXE from the Plug-In V2 home directory, and you are on
  175.      your way.
  176.  
  177.   If you are running the pre-release version of Plug-In, it is recommended
  178.   that you restart Windows after doing the previous procedure. This will
  179.   unload the pre-release DLLs from memory.
  180.  
  181. INTERNATIONAL ISSUES
  182.  
  183.   Plug-In has fairly complete support for international (non-asian)
  184.   countries.  We support international date/time formats and even
  185.   the Talking Clock feature has the ability to use 24 hour format.
  186.   One major thing that is missing in this release is the ability to
  187.   customize the menu items that are inserted into Program Manager's
  188.   menus.  We hope to have this in a later release.
  189.   While most of the international options can be controlled via
  190.   Control Panel and/or Plug-In dialogs there is one that needs
  191.   to be done manually in the PLUGIN.INI file.  If you wish to
  192.   change the 3-character abbreviations used for displaying the
  193.   day of the week and the month, please do the following:
  194.   In PLUGIN.INI (in your Windows directory), add the following
  195.   lines to the [Settings] section, replacing the text as appropriate:
  196.  
  197.   Days=Sun_Mon_Tue_Wed_Thu_Fri_Sat
  198.   Months=Jan_Feb_Mar_Apr_May_Jun_Jul_Aug_Sep_Oct-Nov_Dec
  199.  
  200.   These lines must be EXACTLY the same length as they are here or the
  201.   changes you make won't take effect.
  202.  
  203. CONFLICTS WITH OTHER UTILITIES
  204.  
  205.   There are several programs on the market (both commercial and
  206.   shareware) that offer some overlapping functionality with Plug-In.
  207.   While most of these programs do not cause serious conflicts, you
  208.   might see some unexpected behavior.  For example, if you are
  209.   using another utility that displays information on active title
  210.   bars, you will see both applications fighting to paint on the
  211.   title bar.  Another example is utilites that assign sounds to
  212.   system events.  
  213.  
  214.   Please note that almost everything in Plug-In is configurable.
  215.   If there is a feature you don't desire, check the Control Center.
  216.   Chances are you can disable it or modify the settings to your liking.
  217.  
  218.   We are currently aware of two utilities that have problems when
  219.   Plug-In is running:
  220.  
  221.   1) Icon Hear-It and Icon Do-It.  If these programs are loaded prior
  222.      to Plug-In AND you have icon movies assigned to group icons, the
  223.      group icons with the movies will appear as black squares.  The 
  224.      solution is to have Plug-In load prior to these utilities.  Please
  225.      note that due to the way Plug-In initializes, this workaround is
  226.      only possible in the registered version of Plug-In.
  227.  
  228.   2) Wired for Sound Pro.  This program can cause a GP Fault in Program
  229.      Manager if Plug-In is running.  At this point-in-time, we do not
  230.      know of a workaround, other than to disable Wired for Sound Pro. 
  231.  
  232.  
  233. USING THE [Exclude] SECTION TO AVOID PROBLEMS WITH SOME APPS.
  234.  
  235.   There are some applications which conflict with the method that Plug-In
  236.   uses to manage the Title Bar displays.  If you have an application that
  237.   you think may be conflicting with Plug-In, edit your PLUGIN.INI file (in
  238.   your Windows directory) and add the following lines to the top of the 
  239.   file:
  240.  
  241.   [Exclude]
  242.   MYAPP.EXE=1
  243.   MYAPP2.EXE=1
  244.  
  245.   where MYAPP.EXE and MYAPP2.EXE are the names of conflicting programs.
  246.   You should only enter the filename (not a full path).  Changes to the
  247.   [Exclude] list will take effect the next time you start Plug-In.  Note
  248.   that the [Exclude] list will result in no Title Bar displays for the
  249.   specified applications.
  250.   You can also use the [Exclude] list to avoid having the Title Bar displays
  251.   on certain applications for aesthetic reasons.  An example of this use
  252.   is playing the CD-ROM game "Myst."
  253.   We are working on an update to Plug-In that should solve all these
  254.   problems and not require the [Exclude] list.  Stay tuned for details!
  255.   Some current apps that need the [Exclude] list are:
  256.  
  257.      - AutoCAD for Windows (ACAD.EXE)
  258.      - ChessMaster 4000 (CM4000.EXE)
  259.      - Borland C++ IDE (BCW.EXE)

  262. UPDATE ISSUES FOR OWNERS OF PLUG-IN 1.X
  263.  
  264.   The registration scheme has changed in Plug-In V2.  As a
  265.   current owner of Plug-In 1.x, you are entitled to a complimentary 
  266.   Plug-In V2 registration.
  267.   If you wish to order the update diskette, your new registration
  268.   info will come with the package.  Please see the next section,
  269.   "Ordering the Update Diskette..." for full details.
  270.   If you want your new registration info, but do not desire the
  271.   update diskette, please send us mail, fax, or e-mail (no phone
  272.   calls, please).  Include your name, address, and phone;  and 
  273.   specify that you are a registered user and want the new
  274.   registration info.  We will mail your registration info to
  275.   you.
  276.  
  277. ORDERING THE UPDATE DISKETTE IF YOU CURRENTLY OWN PLUG-IN 1.x
  278.  
  279.   If you currently own Plug-In 1.x, you can obtain the released
  280.   version on diskette.  This diskette contains lots of new icons,
  281.   cursors and sound files (including the Plug-In Talking Clock).

  306. WHERE CAN I OBTAIN THE TALKING CLOCK FILES?
  307.  
  308.   Due to size constraints, the Talking Clock files are packages in a
  309.   separate archive.  The filename is PITALK2?.ZIP, where "?" is the 
  310.   current revision level of Plug-In.  So, if you obtained PLUGIN22.ZIP,
  311.   look for PITALK22.ZIP.  The size of this file is approximately 350K.
  312.  
  313.   If you can't find this archive locally, you can always obtain it from 
  314.   the Plannet Crafters BBS (see below).  Of course, when you purchase
  315.   the product, we ship you a master diskette which contains the Talking
  316.   Clock files, plus lots of other goodies.

  318.   Once you obtain the Talking Clock files, place the contents in the same
  319.   directory as Plug-In.  Note that the Talking Clock feature requires a
  320.   sound card and will NOT work with the standard PC speaker driver!  There
  321.   is a freeware speaker driver that appears to work with the talking clock.

  323.   Note:  If you have already obtained the talking clock files from a 
  324.   previous version of Plug-In V2, there is no need to re-download these
  325.   files as they have not been udpated.

  345.   much longer than anticipated, as we added so much new functionality.
  346.   We take pride in the quality of our documentation and on-line help,
  347.   but we also had pressures to get the product "out the door".  The
  348.   result is that the current documentation is far from perfect.  We
  349.   plan to continue enhancing it as we release minor updates.  Of
  350.   course, our hope is that Plug-In is intuitive enough that you really
  351.   don't need to access the help very often ;-)

  353. PLUG-IN AND CHICAGO (AKA WINDOWS '95 and WINDOWS 4.0)
  354.  
  355.   You might be aware that the next version of Windows (codenamed Chicago)
  356.   is currently under development by Microsoft.  This is a major new 
  357.   release of the Windows environment, which contains many changes.  
  358.   Plug-In will remain a valuable addition to your system when you upgrade
  359.   to Chicago.  However, the current version of Plug-In is only designed to
  360.   operate under Windows 3.x.  We are working on a major update to Plug-In
  361.   that will take advantage of the new features offered by Chicago, and hope
  362.   to have it available when Chicago is released.  Please contact Plannet
  363.   Crafters for further details.

  365. HOW TO DE-INSTALL PLUG-IN
  366.  
  367.   If you wish to de-install Plug-In from a system, do the following:
  368.  
  369.         1) If you have used Plug-In's nested groups (with Program Manager),
  370.            you should first un-nest all nested groups by dragging them to
  371.            Program Manager's desktop.
  372.  
  373.         2) Disable "Run Plug-In when Windows starts" in the General
  374.            Config dialog and press the OK button.  (If you fail to do 
  375.            this, you must manually remove the Plug-In entry from either 
  376.            the StartUp group or the "Load=" line in the WIN.INI file.)  
  377.  
  378.         3) Shutdown Plug-In by selecting "Shutdown Plug-In" in the 
  379.            Plug-In Control Center dialog.
  380.  
  381.         4) In the Windows directory, delete the following files:
  382.            PLUGIN.* and GROUP.EXE
  383.  
  384.         5) Delete all files in Plug-In's home directory (assuming
  385.            this directory contains ONLY Plug-In files!)
  386.

  388. CHANGE HISTORY

  390. Version 1.00
  391. Version 1.31   - The original Plug-In for Program Manager, released on
  392.                  28 September 1992.
  393. Version 2.00   - Very major update from Version 1.x.  So many new features
  394.                  that it is really a new product!
  395. Version 2.10   - Fixed a bug in Application-Specific Events (sound support)
  396.                  that would cause application errors.
  397.                - Save Settings was fixed to avoid a problem whereby an open
  398.                  nested group would become permanently open.
  399.                - Disallow operations on a group with the title of "Groups".
  400.                  It is not permitted to have a group named "Groups" because
  401.                  of the way Plug-In interfaces with Program Manager.
  402.                - Fixed some problems with udpating the Title Bar displays
  403.                - Several smaller fixes
  404.                - Cleaned up the Help file a bit.
  405. Version 2.11   - Fixed an interaction with some video drivers that could
  406.                  cause strange behavior when running full-screen DOS apps
  407.                  (e.g., no text displayed, but typing seems to work).
  408.                - Running Plug-In on HP OmniBooks would display a message
  409.                  stating that "Program Manager could not be found". 
  410.                - Several smaller fixes.
  411.                - Several changes / updates to the README.TXT and online help
  412.                  files.
  413. Version 2.20   - We moved!  So, we updated our address and phone information.
  414.                - Invalid date / time settings caused problems.  We now display
  415.                  a message and abort the load process.
  416.                - Erroneous message was displayed if PLUGIN.INI was not present
  417.                  during Plug-In's Mini-Install process.
  418.                - Chimes would not chime if the "Chime Between" times had an
  419.                  "end time" of 12AM (or 00h) and a "from time" not set to
  420.                  12AM (or 00h).
  421.                - We now accept JCB credit cards.
  422.                - Added a switch to reset the sound driver immediately after
  423.                  Plug-In starts.  If you encounter a problem where sounds 
  424.                  won't work unless you hit the "Test" key in a Plug-In
  425.                  dialog, please edit your PLUGIN.INI file (in your Windows
  426.                  directory) and add "ResetSound=1" to the [Settings] 
  427.                  section.  Please let us know if this does or does not
  428.                  solve the problem on your system!
  429.                - CD-ROM changes were not always detected by Install 
  430.                  Application.
  431.                - Eliminated a situation that could cause a nested group to 
  432.                  become permanently "open".
  433.                - Added a message to clarify the location / parent group when 
  434.                  creating a nested group.
  435.                - Right Click menu on desktop would not stay open if your 
  436.                  mouse was jittery or moved slightly.
  437.                - Several changes / updates to the on-line help, README.TXT 
  438.                  and other text files.
