Two words spring to mind regarding the puzzles in WSA - obscure and difficult. Even at the beginning there is certainly some aimless wandering around to be done, and much of that old adventurer's favourite - clicking on everything, and trying to use everything with everything else, which is never an ideal situation.
Lateral thinking is all well and good, but Goblins was very definitely guilty of taking the concept too far, and WSA strays a little in this respect too.
However, at least the interface is far less confusing. For starters, you have control over just the one character - in Goblins you controlled three little beggars, which only made life more difficult.
