These fall into 3 choices: firstly, the [PARA]self-catering halls, 1 at Redland (145 places) and 2 at St Matthias [PARA](80); secondly, 250 University-owned houses and flats in and [PARA]around the city with space for 400 students; or finally, the 2 [PARA]student villages at Frenchay (552 places) which are self-catering [PARA]houses shared between 7 students each. The main problem with[PARA]the student villages is their distance from the city centre (5 miles) [PARA]and from shops (a mile to the supermarket). A few rooms are [PARA]shared, but only about 3%. There are single sex houses and [PARA]some floors in halls reserved for men or women only.[PARA][BOLD]Car parking:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Extremely inadequate. Early birds catch the [PARA]homeliest nests and the later foragers can end up in fairly dumpy[PARA]dives, paying over the odds, but it's better than cardboard. [PARA]Although local relations are quite good, some areas of Bristol are [PARA]rough 'n' tough, such as St Paul's and St George's where drug [PARA]dealers run their trade on the street corners.[EITAL] [ITAL] [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL] recommends [PARA]a thorough preliminary investigation with the 'granny test' (send [PARA]an old lady alone down the street in question - if they reach the [PARA]end, it's inhabitable). Areas worth trying include Bishopston, [PARA]Cotham, Clifton and Redland. Wherever students lay their hat, [PARA]they find it hard to park their car.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][STAT][BULL] Renting: 89%[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Availability: [EBOLD][ITAL]Accommodation works out just a bit cheaper than for[PARA]those at [ULNE]Bristol University[EULNE], because they can live a little further out[PARA]and still be close to the campus, but otherwise details of [PARA]accommodation in Bristol remain the same. A car certainly [PARA]helps.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Housing help:[EBOLD] The 4 full time and 2 part time staff of the [PARA]Accommodation Office at the University's centre for student [PARA]services provide aid and advice but don't promise cockroach [PARA]checks on the houses they help students find.[PARA][PARA]
