[HDNG]STUDENTS' UNION/UNDEB Y MYFYRWYR:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]P5[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] 5 sabbatical [BULL] Turnout at last ballot: 18.75% [BULL] Ave. turnout[PARA]at General Meetings: 2.5% [BULL] NUS member [ESTAT][PARA][ITAL]The level of participation in union affairs is high, it being [PARA]necessary for students to find their own means of passing the [PARA]time. The College staff take a similarly crusading position - the [PARA]lecturers that is (through the local AUT), not the administrative [PARA]authorities, who look on it all like a small zit: mildly distasteful and [PARA]impossible to ignore. A few years ago, this led to the Union [PARA]taking out national advertising, discouraging people from applying [PARA]to Swansea, but things are a tad calmer now. The Union [PARA]services and welfare are starry stuff - read on...[EITAL][ITAL][HDNG]SU FACILITIES:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA]The Union has a building on the main campus called... go, take a [PARA]guess... got it in one: Mandela House. There's 3 bars, a pizza [PARA]parlour, travel agency, general shop (including 2nd hand books), [PARA]print shop, computer shop, nursery, Endsleigh Insurance, [PARA]launderette, 4 pool and 4 snooker tables, table tennis, photo [PARA]booth, video and vending machines, and pay phones. It also has [PARA]the marginally more originally named Student Amenities Centre [PARA]at Hendrefoilan Student Village which has a general shop, a bar, [PARA]licensed diner, vending machines, a launderette and pay phones. [PARA]By the way, the College signed away their soul to Lloyds Bank [PARA](but then again, so has [PUSH]push[EPUSH]) and consequently theirs is the only [PARA]bank and cashpoint on campus.[HDNG]CLUBS (NON SPORTING):[EHDNG][PARA]607 Revellers; Amnesty; Bosnian Aid; Cult TV; Duke of [PARA]Edinburgh; English; French; German; Greek; Italian; Lodgers Club [PARA](livers-out co-op; organising events and minibus trips to the [PARA]supermarket); Macabre TV; Magic Roundabout Appreciation; [PARA]Militant; Only Fun in Focus (organises Gigs); Palestinian; Plaid [PARA]Cymru; Politics; Psychology; Spanish; Slavonic; World [PARA]Scholarship Appeal.[HDNG]OTHER ORGANISATIONS:[EHDNG][PARA]Rag, which raised a [ITAL]healthy [EITAL]รบ20,000 last year, has a very high [PARA]profile, as does the student community group with over 500 [PARA]people involved and a full time co-ordinator organising 24 projects [PARA]run every week with the young, the old, the disabled and the [PARA]deprived. 'Radio Shreek' is the College radio station filling the [PARA]campus airwaves. The only other regular student media is 'Bad [PARA]Press', the student newspaper, [ITAL]which, fortunately, doesn't [PARA]usually live up to its name[EITAL].[HDNG]RELIGIOUS:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] 5 chaplains (CofE, RC, URC, Methodist, Baptist)[ESTAT][PARA]On campus, there's an inter-denominational chapel, mosque and [PARA]in town, churches of most orientations and places of worship for [PARA]Jews and Jehovah's Witnesses.[HDNG]PAID WORK:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]When industrialism died, most of the jobs in Swansea went with [PARA]it leaving the area fairly depressed. Students looking for work [PARA]often end up in bars, but rarely working there. Engineers and [PARA]select scientists may find a little vocational vacation work in the [PARA]local oil industry.
