[HDNG]TOWN:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]E3[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Price of a pint of beer: ú1.50 [BULL] Glass of wine: ú1.10[ESTAT][PARA]Brighton is bright on entertainments (which is why it's nicknamed[PARA]'London by the sea') offering not just the full flow of the [PARA]mainstream, but also splashes of jazz, reggae, folk and blues. It [PARA]has loads of gay pubs and many clubs have notable DJs. The [PARA]Brighton Festival each May is one of the country's biggest arts [PARA]and entertainment festivals - an excellent distraction from exams.[PARA]It is accompanied by the Festival Radio station, which employs a [PARA]fair few students.[PARA][BOLD]Cinemas:[EBOLD] 3 cinemas including an MGM multiplex and the Duke of[PARA]York's cinema club.[PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] (4) The Pavilion Theatre offering the short back and [PARA]sides of fringe and the Theatre Royal with pre-West End runs, [PARA]summer spectaculars and Xmas pantos.[PARA][BOLD]Pubs:[EBOLD] Expensive but [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: Pig in Paradise (cheaper beers, [PARA]small club upstairs); Great Eastern (near station, bohemian, [PARA]bookshelves); King and Queen (huge, noisy, youthful); Cricketer's[PARA](plush, good central meeting point); Bulldog Tavern, Zanzibar [PARA](gay); Horatio's (student favourite on the end of the pier); Walmer [PARA]Castle (often live music or even poetry); Geese (Irish).[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos:[EBOLD] Some of Brighton's [ITAL]best[EITAL] clubs are nationally [PARA]renowned, such as the[ITAL] trendy and cavernous [EITAL]Zap Club with its [PARA]cabaret nights and gay nights (ú5-7 though, so attracts Sloanes). [PARA]Among the many other clubs to get hit with include The Escape [PARA](ú2-5), tacky times at The Gloucester (ú3) and for cheap [PARA]chuckles, students frequently frequent the Brighton SU's [PARA]Basement Club at Grand Parade (ú2).[PARA][BOLD]Cabaret:[EBOLD] For live jazz and the climb-aboard point for some of the [PARA]top ticklers in cabaret, check out the Concorde or some of the [PARA]local pubs and clubs. Every summer the Brighton Festival of [PARA]Comedy challenges Edinburgh for smiles per mile.[PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] For a bit of Brighton rock, the silver sounds [PARA]emanate from many a cranny and nook: The Event and the [PARA]Brighton Centre are the big name venues (Carter, Duran Duran, [PARA]Tom Jones); the Theatre Royal does classical and opera; and The[PARA]Richmond pub, the Concorde and the Zap provide indie and [PARA]dance stuff.[HDNG]UNIVERSITY:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]E3[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Price of a pint of beer: ú1.50 [BULL] Glass of wine: ú1.10[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Bars:[EBOLD] 5 bars, 3 run by the SU and 2 by the University (a bit more [PARA]pricey). Of the SU's bars, The East Slope Bar (cap 200) is often [PARA]used as a music venue and the Mandela Hall Bar only opens [PARA]when there's an event. The 3rd is Park Village Bar which serves [PARA]a [ITAL]cocky [EITAL]cocktail or two. The University runs the Falmer Bar in [PARA]the SU Building [ITAL]- more of a pub than a bar[EITAL].
