Sheffield Hallam has just emerged from a ú27million redevelopment scheme, built around a glass atrium on the City Campus at Pond Street. There are 4 other sites stretching out to the south-west as far as Totley (7 miles from the centre) on the edge of the Peak District. 3 of the sites, made up of some older stone buildings, are quite close to each other in the leafy suburb of Ecclesall, between 1 and 3 miles west of the centre. Different departments are based at each site and each is pretty much self-sufficient. So students don't need to constantly hop between sites, but, with free inter-site transport, [ITAL]its not that difficult to do when necessary. Students should check on which site their course is based.[EITAL][HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]The proportion of mature students makes for quite an unconventional student body. They don't shy from involvement in conventional student pursuits though, mucking in on the general level of radicalism in dress, politics, interests and experiences. The relationship with the city is also unusual, students feel as much a part of the local community as a part of the University, although it does gives its students a point of reference, an identity. Meanwhile, most courses involve placements which (see below) make a change from academia and keep students' livelier interests alive.[EITAL][HDNG]THE SITES:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]City Campus: [EBOLD](engineering, financial studies, law, SU). Main city centre site, at Pond Street.[PARA][BOLD]Psalter Lane:[EBOLD] (history, design and packaging, fine arts, film making, etc) This is a little community of over 900 students, generally artists and weirdos (the two are not exclusive). 3 miles from Pond St. It has a Union Bar and a few facilities, including a library and a hall (cap 300) for discos.[PARA][BOLD]Hallamshire Business Park:[EBOLD] (computing, etc) This is a brand new site 11/2 miles from the City Campus with about 1,000 students including part-timers. No SU facilities [ITAL]and little atmosphere, but nice carpets.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Collegiate Crescent: [EBOLD](communication, health, teacher training, physiotherapy) The second largest site with 2,600 students, green space and a mix of buildings. The union runs a shop in the Pearson Building. Also sports facilities, 3 halls (housing 425 students) and 65 houses.[PARA][BOLD]Totley: [EBOLD](recreation management, home economics, leisure, part of Business School) 1,000 students situated 7 miles from Pond St on the edge of the Peak District.[HDNG]TOWN:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] Population: 499,700 [BULL] London: 147miles [BULL] Manchester: 35miles [BULL] Birmingham: 67miles[ESTAT][PARA]Sheffield is the cultural core of a wide catchment, offering all sorts of entertainments and diversions. Cars too are diverted from pedestrian parts of the modern city centre. It's a hilly, clean, litterless city, threaded by 3 rivers. The old industrial area has recently been redeveloped and includes the site for 1991's World Student Games, which may have been a financial farce, but left Sheffield well-stuffed for leisure and sports facilities. The suburbs in the south-west, where the University accommodation is based, were described by John Betjeman as one of 'England's prettiest suburbs' (and he [ITAL]rightly[EITAL] advocated the bombing of Slough). [ITAL]As far as amenities are concerned, Sheffield has it all, or almost:[EITAL] [ITAL]local luxuries[EITAL] like late-night shops, 52 parks, street markets, museums and galleries (the City Museum, The Mappin Art Gallery and so on). [ITAL]There are fewer bookshops than might be expected,[EITAL] although 4 big ones and many 2nd hand.[HDNG]TRAVEL:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]Trains:[EBOLD] Sheffield Station offers many routes nationally, including London (2:20hrs, 1/hr), Birmingham, Edinburgh, Bristol.[PARA][BOLD]Coaches:[EBOLD] Sheffield is served by South Yorkshire Transport as well as National Express whose services go to London (ú12.00, 3:20hrs, 6/day), Birmingham (ú9, 2:05hrs, 6/day), Newcastle (ú13.75, 3:55hrs, 2/day), Manchester (ú4.25, 1:35hrs, 6/day) and other destinations.[PARA][BOLD]Car:[EBOLD] 10mins off the M1, Sheffield is also visited by the A57, A61, A616 and A631. 20mins off the end of the M18.[PARA][BOLD]Air:[EBOLD] Manchester is the nearest international airport.[PARA][BOLD]Hitching:[EBOLD] [ITAL]For getting out to the M1 a bus is needed, but then students can cruise by the rule of thumb.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Local:[EBOLD] Local buses run till about 11pm, but before then, they're [ITAL]frequent, reliable and quite cheap.[EITAL] The local minibuses are[ITAL] even better[EITAL], not because they run any later, but because they go everywhere .[PARA][BOLD]Taxis:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Worthy wheels for after 11pm[EITAL]. Private companies are cheaper than the black cabs.
