Any which way, a house-hunting weekend is held in September and all are settled within 3 days of the start of the academic year,[ITAL] although a student's first impressions may not be very homely[EITAL]. Finalists are also offered the chance to live in (about 1/2 take it) and a very small proportion of 2nd years. For the most part, 1st years are allocated places in the catered halls, although some find themselves self-catering (more usually reserved for finalists). With the exception of Sibly (self-catering) and Mansfield (owned by a Japanese college, but not housing exclusively Japanese students), all halls are within a mile of the Whiteknights site. They range from brand new self-catering blocks to the redbrick Oxbridge-style Wantage Hall and Grade II listed St Andrew's Hall. Many of the newest ones even offer en suite facilities. Halls vary in size too, from around 200 to 400 students. Only 2 halls offer no single sex areas, others, although mixed, have women-only corridors and floors. [EITAL]There's a fair amount of housing available within a mile of campus.[ITAL] The rough stuff between London Rd and the Railway and around Oxford Rd is worth giving a miss.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Housing help:[EBOLD] The University Accommodation Office is willing to do a cockroach check on accommodation within a mile of campus. The Welfare Office will also give contracts the once over. [ITAL] The best places though, are usually passed down through generations of students via RUSU's notice board.[EITAL][PARA][PARA]
