There are only 1,139 places, which are snapped up almost exclusively by 1st years but still only manages to accommodate 48% of them. A few rooms (5%) are shared. Jesmond Hall is an all-male hall and the Lovaine Flats have single sex corridors. The halls are 60s high-rise blocks in an [ITAL]unattractive [EITAL]blend of grey concrete and grey concrete. [ITAL]Students complain that they are poorly maintained and that showers never work. [EITAL] 400 new places should be ready by 1995. The University also runs a head tenancy scheme, allocating 500 places in houses and flats, none too far from the city centre. The University acts as a [ITAL]benevolent [EITAL]landlord. (These places have not been included in the above statistics.) The best places to look are in Jesmond - close to the campus and quite posh (but still affordable) - Fenham and Heaton. The West End (postcode NE4) and Benwell have a high crime rate and lots of drug taking. In fact, some students would be surprised if they didn't get offered something, but with cheap accommodation elsewhere, students can afford not to bother with such areas.
