[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA][BULL] Formerly Liverpool Polytechnic[EBOLD][PARA][BOLD]For general information about Liverpool: [EBOLD]see [ULNE]University of Liverpool[EULNE].[BOLD] [EBOLD]Liverpool John Moores University is built on 9 sites. Or maybe only 4. In fact, it's so spread out that it's hard to say exactly how many sites there are and none of them can be said to be the main one. The University used to be 4 separate colleges and you can still detect the cracks where the merger took place back in the 60s. As a result, some of the University buildings are modern purpose-built constructions like the Trueman Building, whilst others, such as the Fine Art Department are [ITAL]fine [EITAL]examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture. As far as most students are concerned, the sites operate more or less independently. They are clustered in the city centre, near [ULNE]Liverpool University[EULNE], and further out in some of the [ITAL]less kempt [EITAL]areas of Liverpool's urban edges.[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]Students at Liverpool's newest university are very attached to their city, many of them are mature and live here all year round. But they are right to be proud of Liverpool which is a vibrant place to live, large enough to have all the amenities of a sprawling city, but small enough to be both intimate and friendly. They're also proud of their university (if not its new name), even though, with so many sites and no central administration point, the city is just about the only thing that unites them. But there's is also their SU and its building, the Haigh, which is the nub of an electric social life.[EITAL][ITAL][HDNG]THE SITES:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][BOLD]IM Marsh: [EBOLD] (3,000 students - Education, Community Studies) IM Marsh in Aigburth (3 miles from the city centre) has a central Georgian building surrounded by modern additions and is [ITAL]the most isolated site[EITAL] in a [ITAL]leafy [EITAL]residential part of the city - [ITAL]good for sport, but otherwise fairly insular. [EITAL][PARA][BOLD]The Byrom Street:[EBOLD] (6,000 - 7 science and engineering faculties, Computing) A 60s [ITAL]carbuncle[EITAL] and the more attractive Georgian Mountford Building in the city's shopping district, 2 miles from the centre.[PARA][BOLD]Mount Pleasant: [EBOLD](4,000 - Business School, modern languages) An old building with lots of gargoyle type things, next door to the Haigh. There's a big new Learning Resources Centre here.[PARA][BOLD]Myrtle St/Hope Place:[EBOLD] (750 - Arts and Drama) Small old buildings close to the city centre.[PARA][BOLD]Hope St:[EBOLD] (2,500 - Law and Social Work, Media, Textiles) The arty quarter, near enough Mount Pleasant to be virtually the same site and 1 mile from the centre. Josephine Butler House is a converted women's hospital and Hahnamann Building is another Georgian building, very over-crowded.[PARA][BOLD]Tithebarn St: [EBOLD](2,000 - Health and Social Sciences) Purpose-built teaching accommodation of post-war horribleness, 1 mile from the centre.[PARA][BOLD]Trueman St:[EBOLD] (2,000 - Health and Social Sciences) Brand new [ITAL]and very... er... functional[EITAL]. 2 miles to centre.[PARA][BOLD]Clarence St:[EBOLD] (1,500 - Building, Environmental Studies) Another 60s eyesore, just 1 mile from the centre.[BOLD][HDNG]THE CITY:[EHDNG][EBOLD][PARA][BOLD][STAT][BULL] Population: 448,300 [BULL] London: 189 miles [BULL] Manchester: 28 miles[ESTAT][EBOLD][PARA]Liverpool was once a prosperous merchant town, doing deals on the docks, touting for trade inland. It still bears the legacy of former times with grand Victorian houses and old streets built for carriages, such as Princes Road lined with tall houses, but it's seen some rough times, and some areas, such as Toxteth, have become notorious. But it's far from all gloom and doom: the Albert Dock development is just one part of a face-lift programme [ITAL]that makes Michael Jackson's surgery look slight by comparison[EITAL]. [ITAL]The richness and contrast of architectural styles is being revitalised and is beginning to reflect the spirit of the people, a spirit that never dwindled.[EITAL] There are nightclubs everywhere [ITAL]and bohemian bustle is bubbling away. [EITAL]Supermarkets, shops and markets abound, and there's more for tourists to do than visit Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields. There are the Liverpool Museum, the Museum of Labour History, the Walker Art Gallery (the largest art collection in the UK outside London), the Tate Gallery in Albert Dock and the University's own art gallery on campus.[HDNG]TRAVEL:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]Trains: [EBOLD]Main-line links with many destinations including London Euston (2:40hrs, 1/hr), Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds and Birmingham.[PARA][BOLD]Coaches: [EBOLD]National Express to most destinations including London (ú16.00, 4:05hrs, 5/day), Birmingham (ú6.50, 2:20hrs, 15/day) and Manchester (ú3.50, 0:50, 18/day).[PARA][BOLD]Car: [EBOLD]M53, M56, M57, M58 and M62 (good for North West and Wales).[PARA][BOLD]Air: [EBOLD]Flights inland and to Belfast and Dublin from Liverpool Airport, 7 miles from the city centre.[PARA][BOLD]Ferries: [EBOLD]This is the main port for Belfast and there are other regular ferries to Ireland. [ITAL]And, of course, there's the ferry 'cross the Mersey.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Hitching: [EBOLD][ITAL]Good connections and many long haul drivers who sympathise, especially round the M62.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Local:[EBOLD][ITAL] Efficient, but expensive, bus services.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Underground:[EBOLD] [ITAL]The Metro is the best way of getting around town although delays can be common.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Taxis:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Many black cabs and other dodgy merchants - a bit of a taxi city - but prices aren't cheap.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Bicycles: [EBOLD][ITAL]Too smoggy and large, and chances are the bike'll get nicked. The city came last in a 'New Cyclist' magazine survey.[EITAL][ITAL][HDNG]NOS and REQUIREMENTS:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Arts/Prof[EBOLD] 7,969 16-18pts[BOLD][PARA]Eng/Sci[EBOLD] 4,175 16-18pts[BOLD][PARA]Health/Soc Sci[EBOLD] 6,166 16-18pts[HDNG]LIBRARIES and COMPUTERS:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] Books: 554,000 [BULL] Periodicals: 2,672 [BULL] Study places: 1,281 [BULL] Computer workstations: 744[ESTAT][PARA]2 main libraries and 5 smaller ones.[ITAL][HDNG]CAREER PROSPECTS:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][ITAL][STAT][BULL] Careers Service [BULL] No of staff: 9full [BULL] Unemployed after 6mths (1992): 12.7%[ESTAT][EITAL][ITAL][HDNG]SPECIAL FEATURES:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][BULL]Phil Redmond - TV mogul and deviser/one-time writer of such series as 'Grange Hill' and 'Brookside' - is an Honorary Professor of the University.[PARA][PARA][BULL]In a ballot of students when it was still Liverpool Poly, 60% opposed 'Liverpool John Moores University' as the new name.[PARA][PARA][BULL]40% of students are Merseysiders.[HDNG]FAMOUS ALUMNI:[EHDNG][PARA]Bill Drummond (K Foundation); Debbie Greenwood (ex-Miss England and TV presenter); Martin Offiah (Rugby League); Dave Puccioni (New York DJ).
