[HDNG]THE UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL GUILD OF STUDENTS:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]P5[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] 4 sabbatical [BULL] Turnout at last ballot: 15% [BULL] Ave. turnout at General Meetings: 1-2% [BULL] NUS member [ESTAT][PARA][ITAL]The Guild is the 2nd largest students' union building in Europe (the biggest is in Paris) and so it's not surprising that it offers some pretty good facilities, but also being so big, it's often difficult to fill it. Even with several hundred students at an event, it can feel almost empty. This makes it a bit daunting and almost as many students use [ULNE]John Moores University[EULNE]'s Haigh SU Building, which is smaller and cosier. Still, it's a bit rich to start complaining that the Guild facilities are too big while too many students' unions have to go without. What's more, it's undergoing a ú1.3million refit, including the creation of a Student Services Centre, containing some of the University's support services (eg. the careers service, health centre, etc), bars, shops, and more.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]SU FACILITIES:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA]Bars; cafeterias; Print shop; general shop; photographers; optician; 'Little Cohen' Library with study area; travel agency; off licence; prayer room; International Lounge; launderette; hair-dresser; table tennis; snooker; Mountford Hall (cap 1,500); Monday market in Mountford Hall (clothes, veg, plants, etc); theatre; dark room; band practice room; cloak-room (for leaving bags, etc); function rooms; photo booth; games and vending machines; film making facilities; photocopying.[HDNG]CLUBS (NON SPORTING):[EHDNG][PARA]Amnesty International; Anti-Fascist; Ba'hai; Change Ringers (bellringing); Critical Legal; Gilbert and Sullivan; House music; Greek; Irish; Juggling; Live Action Role Playing; Malaysian; Methodist; Militant; Northern Ireland Children's Holiday Scheme; Open Air; Postgrad and Mature; Pro-Life (anti-abortion); Psychical Research; RCP; Sci Fi; Third World First; Malaysian; Welsh; Wine-Tasting.[HDNG]OTHER ORGANISATIONS:[EHDNG][PARA]There are a student newspaper 'Gazette' and an arts magazine 'Sphinx', the oldest student rag in the country. The Guild executive produce a newsletter ('Communique'). The charity Rag raised ú9,000 last year and the community action group has a full time paid worker who co-ordinates many local help projects.[HDNG]RELIGIOUS:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] 2chaplains (CofE, RC)[ESTAT][PARA]There's the inter-denominational prayer room in the Union and an Anglican chaplaincy on campus. There are 2 cathedrals in town, Catholic and Anglican, in strongly contrasting architectural styles, and both within praying distance of the Union. There are plenty of churches, more synagogues than in any other English town this size and a few mosques, as well as temples for Hindus, Buddhists and Hare Krishnas.[HDNG]PAID WORK:[EHDNG][PARA]There is high unemployment in Liverpool, so there's lots of competition for the few places in bakeries, shops and bars[ITAL].[EITAL][PARA][PARA]
