[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]S2[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Recent successes: rugby, orienteering [ESTAT][PARA][ITAL]One of the clearest expressions of college differences is through the intercollegiate sporting competitions for the Carter Shield, but they often gang up and show a strong force in national competitions. [EITAL]Every year the University fights for the Roses Cup with York University, which Lancaster have won more often than York (but not in the last 4 years). Facilities, all on the campus, [ITAL]are a bolstering boon to sporting success. [EITAL] To be able to use them, students must join the Athletics Union (ú6) after which most facilities are free or less than ú1.[HDNG]SPORTS FACILITIES:[EHDNG][PARA]18.2 acres of playing fields ([ITAL]which allegedly provide a fine harvest of magic mushrooms in season[EITAL]); all-weather pitches; sports hall; 12 squash courts; croquet lawn; bowling green; 25m swimming pool; climbing wall; gymnasium; multigym; sauna and solarium; gym; weights rooms (male and female); dance studio; athletics area; golf practice area; 8 tennis courts; archery range; floodlit hard playing area; and University's Lake Carter. Locally, a golf course and the River Lune (where the University has a boat house). Sailing Club uses the Glasson Dock marina.
