Not all this local brew gets [PARA]transported out of the county and Canterbury is full of pubs that [PARA]serve a [ITAL]mean [EITAL]brew or two. [ITAL]Testing the local tastes is a major [PARA]student pastime. [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: Locomotive (very friendly, tranquil); [PARA]Three Compasses (packed, wild and brash); The Pilgrim (ú1 a [PARA]pint on Sundays, ie very popular with students); Falstaff and Tap; [PARA]Rose and Crown; Cherry Tree. The Man of Kent is for men of [PARA]Kent, not students.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos:[EBOLD] (2) [ITAL]Canterbury is not club city[EITAL]. The choice is [PARA]between: (a) The Bizz Nightclub - [ITAL]Tracey/Wayne special [EITAL](b) The[PARA]Works - the small, dark,[ITAL] more hip [EITAL]basement of the Bizz; or (c) [ITAL]an[PARA]early night.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] Classical concerts are held in the Cathedral and [PARA]the Marlowe Theatre, which also has folk music. For local bands[PARA]and indie, there's the Penny Theatre. [ITAL]Otherwise, a trip to [PARA]Metronome or Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone (over 14 miles) or [PARA]Whitstable Labour Club (6 miles) is in order, but still mainly local [PARA]bands.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Others: [EBOLD]Many students have to live as far away as Herne Bay [PARA]and Whitstable between 5 and 7 miles away on the north coast [PARA]of Kent. Each [PARA]college has its own bar: Eliot ([ITAL]big and spacious[EITAL]); Keynes ([ITAL]small [PARA]and intimate[EITAL]); Darwin ([ITAL]small[EITAL]); Rutherford ([ITAL]big[EITAL]).[PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] The Gulbenkian Theatre on campus (cap 342) [ITAL]is very [PARA]well equipped, but there's a price to be paid for that - it's not for [PARA]the exclusive use of students. [EITAL] It plays host to many touring [PARA]productions, the annual Canterbury Festival and concerts of all [PARA]sorts. In the foyer there's an area for regular art exhibitions. [ITAL][PARA]However, drama in the University is of an Oscar-winning [PARA]standard and has all the enthusiasm of a dog whose owner's [PARA]holding a tin opener.[EITAL] The University has the largest drama [PARA]department in the country and a new drama building. Students [PARA]put on productions in makeshift theatres in the colleges when the [PARA]Gulbenkian's booked.[PARA][BOLD]Cinemas:[EBOLD] (2) The University runs a Film Studies course and [PARA]makes a point of showing art house pics (Naked, Life is Sweet) [PARA]in the Cornwallis Lecture Theatre. These are twice a week, [PARA]under the name of Cinema 3. The Union[ITAL] panders to a lower [PARA]common denominator[EITAL] with showings of movies such as, [PARA]recently, Made in America, Unforgiven, Beauty and the Beast.[PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos and music venues:[EBOLD] Bops in the 3 of the 4 college [PARA]bars (caps 130-300) and Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), held [PARA]once a week in each, run by the Union and JCR committees. [ITAL] [PARA]Indie music is popular, but there aren't any venues big enough to [PARA]attract bands bigger than those who either are on their way to the[PARA]charts (but haven't got there yet) or those that will never get there.[PARA]What they lose in quality, they try to make up for in quantity -[EITAL] [PARA]there's some kind of event in 1 of the colleges at least 4 times a [PARA]week. All 4 JCRs are used as well as the colleges' dining halls (400-650).[PARA][BOLD]Recent band appearances:[EBOLD] The Frank and Walters, James [PARA]Taylor Quartet.[PARA][BOLD]Cabaret: [EBOLD]2 funsters per term; recently, Doug Anthony Allstars, [PARA]Stevie Starr.[HDNG]EATING OUT:[EHDNG][PARA]Students usually eat in the 4 college refectories, open most of the[PARA]day. The SU provides cafes in the college JCRs. Local scoff [PARA]shops are geared to the student and tourist trade and there are [PARA]plentiful Indian, Italian, pizza, Chinese, French and vegetarian [PARA]restaurants, as well as various fish'n'chip shops and other [PARA]takeaways. [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plug: Cafe des Amis, which, is, of course, [PARA]Mexican.[EITAL] Students who need to stuff something down their [PARA]throats late at night can resort to curries and kebabs but only until[PARA]midnight. The Keynes Burger Bar on campus is open till 11.30pm.
