[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA][BULL] Formerly Humberside Polytechnic[EBOLD][PARA][BOLD]For general information about Hull:[EBOLD] see [ULNE]University of Hull[EULNE].[BOLD] [EBOLD]It [PARA]seems only yesterday (in fact, it was 1983) that Hull and Grimsby[PARA]colleges were becoming Humberside Poly, and now they're [PARA]Humberside University. [ITAL]Still suffering from the hangover of being[PARA]separate colleges,[EITAL] the University is based on 4 sites (3 in Hull and[PARA]1 in Grimsby, 20 miles south east on the other side on the [PARA]Humber estuary). [ITAL]Sites that are not within walking distance of [PARA]each other are still, as far as most students are concerned, [PARA]almost separate institutions. There was very little sense (or proof[PARA]in terms of facilities) that this was a proper poly. With very few [PARA]real changes, despite now being a university, many students still [PARA]refer to it as the Poly. Hull is becoming something of a student [PARA]city, but the older institution is making the running.[EITAL][HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]The number of sites without cast iron links and the proportion of [PARA]mature students conspire to slow down any party potential. [PARA]Some students (particularly at the Cottingham and Inglemire [PARA]Avenue sites) pop round the corner to [ULNE]Hull University[EULNE] for a social [PARA]life. Many students end up here through the clearing system, [PARA]stoically accepting the fact that, with phenomenal amounts of [PARA]funding and development, it could have a lot of potential. Maybe.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]THE SITES:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Cottingham Road: [EBOLD](business, engineering, infotech) The [PARA]University's largest and [ITAL]most elegant[EITAL] site, next door to [ULNE]Hull [PARA]University[EULNE], it is constructed of brick with grass quads in front. A [PARA]few [ITAL]flash [EITAL]additions like the modern Polygon building and the [PARA]Conference Centre. Many of the University's overseas student [PARA]are based on this site, [ITAL]giving it a very international air.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Inglemire Avenue:[EBOLD] (humanities, social and professional studies) A[PARA]couple of hundred yards round the corner from Cottingham Road[PARA]and surrounded by playing fields and a convent, this is a set of 4 [PARA]buildings (2 dating from the 1920s) with a [ITAL]bland [EITAL]block of concrete [PARA]and glass to the front.[PARA][BOLD]Queen's Gardens:[EBOLD] (art and design, architecture) city centre sites, [PARA]about 2 miles from Cottingham Rd.[PARA][BOLD]Nun's Corner (Grimsby):[EBOLD] (food and fisheries) Grimsby may only [PARA]be 32 miles from Hull but, for the 1,000 students based here, [ITAL]it [PARA]might as well be 100, with the Humber in the way and the [PARA]Humber Bridge the only way across. Nun's Corner, therefore, [PARA]forms a tight student community[EITAL] on a campus 1 mile from the [PARA]centre of Grimsby. [ITAL]It is very isolated and everyone knows each [PARA]other[EITAL]. Apart from a few playing fields, it has few amenities. [ITAL][PARA]What's more, Hull may not be dull, but Grimsby's grim with even [PARA]less going on at night than during the day.[EITAL] [ITAL]The courses based [PARA]here are reputed to be good, though.[EITAL] [ITAL]We propose the motto: 'Live[PARA]in hell, but study well'.[EITAL][ITAL][HDNG]TOWN:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][ITAL][STAT][BULL] Population: 242,000 [BULL] London: 165miles [BULL] York: 34miles [PARA]Leeds: 50miles[ESTAT][EITAL][PARA]Back in the 19th century, fish were responsible for the growth of [PARA]Hull - the fishing industry rather than a school of particularly [PARA]enterprising haddock. This century, trade has shifted to [PARA]industries, particularly chemical ones. [ITAL]In a weird twist of the old [PARA]adage, Hull is an okay place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit [PARA]there. It hasn't got much to attract tourists,[EITAL] but has all the [PARA]paraphernalia that attend daily existence: shops, banks, [PARA]bookshops, VD clinics and so on. The most amazing local sights[PARA]include the docks and marina, the Hull Fair, several art galleries, [PARA]the Humber Suspension Bridge (the largest central span in the [PARA]world) and the cream-coloured telephone boxes. Hull is the only [PARA]town in Britain to have its own telephone system.[PARA][PARA][BOLD]Grimsby: [EBOLD][ITAL]Grimsby may be grim, but it has more character than [PARA]Hull and a strong history and heritage as one of England's most [PARA]important seaports. It's smaller than Hull and apart from [PARA]supermarkets, is somewhat short on amenities or fun.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]TRAVEL:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Trains:[EBOLD] Hull Paragon BR Station runs direct services to London [PARA](2:50hrs, 2/day) and other connections to Birmingham, Bristol [PARA]and Edinburgh.[PARA][BOLD]Coaches:[EBOLD] Clipper and National Express services all over the [PARA]country including London (ú23.00, 4.45hrs, 4/day), Leeds (ú5.00, [PARA]1:45hrs, 2/day), and Newcastle (ú13.00, 3:35hrs, 1/day).[PARA][BOLD]Car:[EBOLD] From the south the M18 connects the M1 with the local Hull [PARA]motorway, the M62. From the north, the M1 then M62 which [PARA]leads into the A63 - then look out for the A1079.[PARA][BOLD]Air:[EBOLD] Humberside Airport, 12 miles south across the Humber. is [PARA]mainly for inland flights, although has some to Europe.[PARA][BOLD]Ferries:[EBOLD] To Holland and Scandinavia.[PARA][BOLD]Hitching:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Prospects okay, having reached the main routes out of [PARA]Humberside, but getting that far can present a problem.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Local:[EBOLD] There's a [ITAL]fiercely competitive[EITAL] number of bus companies [PARA]running until midnight-ish. Fares from 30p to 60p. There are 3 [PARA]train stops in Hull, 2 of which are useful for students, since 1 is in [PARA]the city centre and the other is in Cottingham.[PARA][BOLD]Taxis:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Sharing taxis is often cheaper than catching a bus or train.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Bicycles:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Hull is very flat with straight wide roads between the [PARA]residential and functional parts of the University. However, theft [PARA]is rife.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL]Travel between sites isn't often necessary.
