[EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: Zetland Arms, College Arms (both opposite the University); Yates Wine Bar (near University); The Union Bank (off Main St, student hacks); the Terrace (featuring 'the mean 13', 13 different beers with a challenge to drinkers: drink a pint of each and win a T-Shirt); Rat and Ratchet (studenty, 12 real ales and sometimes live music).[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Some local clubs are truly naff and the many students who frequent them do so with their tongues firmly planted in their cheeks and manage to have a ticklin' time. [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: Johnny's (the Cliff Richard of clubs - it has withstood the test of time - naff, students on Mondays, ú1); Calisto's (small, not naff, ú1). The SU is buying the Bel Air club.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] Classical at the Town Hall and elsewhere, but the Union's the only live venue for [ITAL]less stuffy[EITAL] sounds apart from a few pubs. Thursday nights are 'Bop till you Cop' nights (or 'Bop till you Barf' as most students put it), when 60s and 70s music spins till late.[PARA][BOLD]Cabaret: [EBOLD]Once a month, the usual suspects; Lee Evans, Jeff Green, etc.[PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] Band appearances are for the most part run by an outside agency who keep the door money and the Union gets the bar takings. Mainly local bands, but is also big enough to attract some of the [ITAL]better [EITAL]bands that tour student unions, such as recently, BjÜrn Again, Oui 3, Chumbawamba and XC-NN. St Joseph's, a small sort of prefab affair, is also used for regular sounds. As well as the big bands, there's a regular jazz band slot and classical concerts, or, more usually string quartet background music.[PARA][BOLD]Other:[EBOLD] Various balls and dinners, providing a good range, all revolving around alcohol and usually with drinks promotions.[HDNG]EATING OUT:[EHDNG][PARA]The refectory areas look like the London Underground during the blitz, serving sarnies 'n' pies all day. The Union has a cafeteria. For other choicer chomps, try pub lunches ([ITAL]The Royal Swan in town[EITAL]). [ITAL] Local eateries are not plentiful and offer more by way of value than quality. Some are worth [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugging anyway: Mensahib (cheap studenty Indian); Blue Rooms (good vegetarian, not so cheap); Shabab (upmarket Indian); Paris II (French, not cheap, but good value); Trattoria (Italian)[EITAL]. Fast food flows in rivers of grease throughout the city. [ITAL]Try Abrakebabra for kebabs, pizzas and, er, witty name[EITAL]. Some stay open till 3.30am.
