[HDNG]IN LONDON:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]E3[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Price of a pint of beer: ú1.50 [BULL] Glass of wine: ú1.45[ESTAT][PARA][ITAL]For a weekly guide to the Capital's entertainments, 'Time Out' [PARA]magazine is a must. [EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Pubs:[EBOLD][ITAL] London is a bitter blow for bitter lovers. Some London [PARA]pubs water down their ridiculously expensive beer (sometimes [PARA]over ú2 a pint), but one of the few sparkles in your glass is the [PARA]rise of the Weatherspoon chain, dedicated to good ale and food, [PARA]at superb prices (regular 99p a pint specials). Look for the blue [PARA]and gold livery. [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs in Bloomsbury area: Jeremy Bentham;[PARA]Rising Sun.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Cinemas:[EBOLD] [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: many repertory cinemas offer student [PARA]discounts and The Prince Charles Cinema just off Leicester [PARA]Square shows films from ú1.99.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Theatres: [EBOLD]Student standby tickets are sometimes available for [PARA]West End shows, but they're still around ú8. The National [PARA]Theatre on the South Bank is cheaper and features some of the [PARA]country's top talent. Also, don't forget the Fringe (the collective [PARA]title for all the smaller theatres around town, ranging from back [PARA]rooms at pubs to full size auditoria)[ITAL] where you can often see high[PARA]quality at low cost.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos: [EBOLD][ITAL] [EITAL]Although London clubs are always at the very nub [PARA]of any fashion scene, you pay for the privilege. At top nightspots,[PARA]admission starts at around ú5 and drinks can be anything up to 5 [PARA]times pub prices. There is, however, an ever-changing set of [PARA]cheaper hang-outs where the latest sounds are available without [PARA]the latest prices. [ITAL] [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: Heaven (mostly gay); Camden [PARA]Palace; Maximus; Ministry of Sound; Fridge; Subterania. These [PARA]are the venues; individual events move between clubs, and [PARA]disappear like cliches in the night, so don't blame [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH] [ITAL]if our [PARA]recommendations for Smashing, Pleased, Billion Dollar Babes [PARA]and Kinky Gerlinky send them off into the memory-zone of the [PARA]groove.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Cabaret: [EBOLD]London is a hot-bed of alternative laugh-mongers[ITAL]. [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL][PARA]plugs: There's the just-moved Comedy Store or, more cheaply, [PARA]Jongleurs (Camden, Battersea, Shepherds Bush), East Dulwich [PARA]Cabaret, Hackney Empire and many, many more.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Music venues: [EBOLD]Many of the country's biggest and most famous, [PARA]including Wembley Stadium and Arena, Hammersmith Apollo [PARA](was the Odeon), The Marquee, The Forum (was the Town and [PARA]Country), The Garage (was TandC 2), The Astoria, The [PARA]Hackney Empire, The Brixton Academy, The New Cross [PARA]Venue, as well as innumerable pubs, warehouses, cardboard [PARA]boxes, and, of course, Tube stations.[HDNG]NEW CROSS:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]E3[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Price of a pint of beer: ú1.50 [BULL] Glass of wine: ú1.30[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Cinemas:[EBOLD] For most entertainments - not least movie-going - the [PARA]West End has more to offer than the locality.[PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] Again the West End, although Greenwich Theatre has,[PARA]in the past, fed the West End with some of its [ITAL]most moist [PARA]morsels[EITAL] ('Another Country' started here with Rupert Everett).[PARA][BOLD]Pubs:[EBOLD] [ITAL]A few are worthwhile (Amersham Arms, Paradise Bar, [PARA]Dew Drop Inn), but most are expensive, dingy and have fighting [PARA]dogs (especially Macmillans).[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos and music venues:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Live music and spinning sounds [PARA]are soundest in some of the less unwholesome local pubs and [PARA]clubs. Recommended: The Venue (Oasis, King Kurt, Dr and the [PARA]Medics); Amersham Arms; Up the Creek (regular comedy slot); [PARA]and The Crypt.[EITAL][ITAL][HDNG]COLLEGE:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][ITAL][GRPH]E1[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Price of a pint of beer: ú1 [BULL] Glass of wine: 80p[ESTAT][EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Bars:[EBOLD] (4) 3 bars all run by the SU, including 1 at the Loring Sports Ground.[PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] With lots of drama and arts students, it's not surprising[PARA]that Goldsmiths' is well-equipped: a proscenium stage in the [PARA]George Wood Theatre and 3 studios used for thespian pursuits, [PARA]dished up with bowel-challenging regularity.[PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos:[EBOLD] Every Wednesday and Friday, the Tiananmen [PARA]Building (cap 800) is one big disco venue.[PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] Meanwhile, almost every other night of the week, [PARA]live lithe bands let loose on the ears of the willing who turn out in [PARA]their driven droves. Tuesday is live jazz, Thursday is blues [PARA]and/or rock and at weekends, [ITAL]as 'Time Out' so rightly said, [PARA]Goldsmiths' is 'one of the best college venues for gigs'.[EITAL] There's a[PARA]small Concert Hall in the Music Department (cap 200) and the [PARA]Great Hall (600). All this and ULU too.[PARA][BOLD]Recent band appearances:[EBOLD] The Selecter; Oui3; The Prodigy; Corduroy.[PARA][BOLD]Cabaret:[EBOLD] Once a term, the music muses give way to the giggle [PARA]masters. Recently Lee Evans, Stevie Starr, Alastair McGowan.[HDNG]EATING OUT:[EHDNG][PARA]In the College itself, there are 3 popular options for daytime dining:[PARA]the main college refectory (3 meals a day with plenty of choice [PARA]for about ú1.50); the SU's Panhandle ([ITAL]tops[EITAL] for pizzas, salads, hot [PARA]veggie dishes at lunch and in the evening); and the SU coffee [PARA]shop (snacks and sandwiches, burgers and baked spuds). [PARA]Locally, the multi-cultural culture makes for a varied cuisine, [PARA]everything from killer kebabs and fast food franchises to ethnic [PARA]take-aways and [ITAL]great vegetarian restaurants in Greenwich.[EITAL] All [PARA]night long, there's something open; just as much as - if not more [PARA]than - in the West End. [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plug: Thailand, opposite the college [PARA](hint: it's not a burger bar).[EITAL]
