[HDNG]THE CITY:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]E2[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Price of a pint of beer: ú1.20 [BULL] Glass of wine: ú1[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Cinemas:[EBOLD] (8) For those with a passion for the pictures, there are [PARA]enough cinemas to keep eyes squared for ages, including [PARA]everything from 21st century multiplexes to old-fashioned flea [PARA]pits. There are a few which specialise in arty flicks, including the [PARA]Glasgow Film Theatre.[PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] Glasgow hosts Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet, the [PARA]Scottish National Orchestra and Chorus and the Scottish [PARA]Exhibition Centre. [ITAL]Not bad, eh? Well, as we already said, [PARA]Glasgow's Miles Better (than a slap in the face with a wet fish).[EITAL] [PARA]And, of course, there are standard theatrics too, notably at the [PARA]Theatre Royal (with visits from the RSC and the National [PARA]Theatre), the Citizen's Theatre for rep, the Tramway for [PARA]experimental drama and the King's Theatre for [ITAL]quality [EITAL]touring and[PARA]amateur companies. Every May, there's the Mayfest, which, [PARA]although a lot smaller (and more radical) than the Edinburgh [PARA]Festival, has the advantage of being during term. There is [PARA]Streetbiz street theatre every August.[PARA][BOLD]Pubs:[EBOLD][ITAL] Some of the city's best beer bars are more fun than a [PARA]naked frolic in mud. [EITAL] [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs (among many others): Victoria [PARA]Bar, Bridgegate (trendy, arty); Brahms and Liszt; Brunswick [PARA]Cellars; Busby's; Horseshoe (friendly, unpretentious); Bon [PARA]Accord (real ales). Don't try your luck in the East End if you're [PARA]English, or the Red Lion unless you want to join the BNP.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Glasgow's clubs may not be cheap but they're [PARA]rocking.[EITAL] Many have student nights. [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: The Tunnel [PARA](trendy, ú5); Cotton Club (ú2 for students); Fury Murrays [PARA](studenty, ú3). Bennetts (ú4) and the cruisy Club X (ú3) are the [PARA]main gay haunts.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] Many local bands have made it big, often starting [PARA]out at some of the many [ITAL]vibe-ridden[EITAL] venues. [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: [PARA]Barrowlands (Lemonheads, INXS, REM); Royal Concert Hall [PARA](Mozzer, Lisa Stansfield, Tori Amos); SECC (Take That, U2, [PARA]Cliff); King Tut's Wah Wah Hut (Boo Radleys); and Pavilion (jazz [PARA]and blues).[EITAL][HDNG]UNIVERSITY:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]E2[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Price of a pint of beer: ú1.10 [BULL] Glass of wine: 80p[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Bars:[EBOLD] (7) There are bars at both of the university's 2 - yes 2 [PARA]-unions. 2 at Queen Margaret Union (QM) and 5 at Glasgow [PARA]University Union (GUU), including the [ITAL]excellent [EITAL]'Beerie'. [ITAL] The [PARA]atmosphere is very different in each: at GUU, students lounge in [PARA]leather chairs; at QM, they'll squat on anything available. QM also [PARA]has an offie.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] The University's theatre hosts regular productions. [PARA]Last year, students took 3 shows to the Edinburgh Fringe.[PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos/music venues:[EBOLD] Both QM and GUU have regular [PARA]club nights, [ITAL]but GUU wins it [EITAL]with the refurbished and [ITAL]21st century[PARA][EITAL]The Hive (cap 1,000) narrowly beating QM's Common Room [PARA](1,200), although QM has recently been forcing its way onto the [PARA]big gig circuit. Both do their stuff 3 times a week. Both club [PARA]venues also host live bands.[PARA][BOLD]Recent band appearances:[EBOLD] GUU: Credit to the Nation, Jools [PARA]Holland, Utah Saints. QM: The Fall, The Cranberries, Manics, Therapy?[PARA][BOLD]Others:[EBOLD] The highlight of the entertainments year is 'Daft Friday', [PARA]the last day of the 1st term, when GUU hold a posh ball for its [PARA]members only. (The Stone of Scone scheme was reputedly [PARA]hatched on Daft Friday). In retaliation, QM started the 'Dafter [PARA]Friday Ball' which is much less formal and geared around bands [PARA]and discos. Both unions have other occasional events like the [PARA]unavoidable karaoke, cabaret and so on.[HDNG]EATING OUT:[EHDNG][PARA]The University refectory injects a bit of high grade tummy fuel [PARA]including sit-down meals and snacks from 8.30am till midnight. [PARA]GUU has 3 outlets (8am to 6.30pm) and, in the red corner, QM [PARA]has 2 (times vary). If students still fancy a bite, there's many a [PARA]local cafe, snack bar and pub. [ITAL]As for eating out, Glasgow has [PARA]plenty of restaurants, but Keith Floyd would be unimpressed by [PARA]the ones that students can afford. For those with sweet teeth, [PARA]and a sugar-daddy to match, Cafe Rogano does the best [PARA]chocolate mousse ever. The West End is packed with everything[PARA]from pizzas to potatoes to pakoras to puppyburgers, into the wee[PARA]small hours.[EITAL]
