On Sundays, it has comedy nights with recent appearances from John Hegley, Mark Steel and Jim Tavare. The Whitehall Theatre hosts local amateur dramatics.[PARA][BOLD]Pubs:[EBOLD] Many of the city's [ITAL]best [EITAL]pubs are right on the edge of the Dundee University campus and frequently frequented by students. Of course, being Scotland, they're open virtually the whole time. [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: The Phoenix, Nethergate (small, busy, town and gown mix, good food); McGonagall's, Perth Rd (small, studenty); Mennies, Perth Rd (rugby club); Parliamentary Bar (getting trendy); Tally-Ho (beer yard out back); Globe (the only pub with Red Stripe on tap); Mickey Coyle's; the Ascot; The Scout Tavern (live music). Avoid Greystokes and anywhere more than a mile from the campus.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Dundee's clubs may not be Stringfellows, but that doesn't stop students having a good time. A bit pricey though. [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: The Edge (studentsville, ú2) Fat Sam's (alternative e-trippers, ú2.50); De Stihls (suits and ties, optional moustache and tattoo, ú2-4); Jasper's (for metalheads).[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] Apart from Fat Sam's (which has recently featured Bjorn Again), Caird Hall has monthly performances by the Scottish National Opera and a summer prom season, but has also provided a venue for the likes of Morrissey in the recent past. The West Port pub swings to cajun and Mexican sounds.[PARA][BOLD]Others:[EBOLD] For fun before nightfall, there're the zoo and wildlife sanctuary and the beaches. The Main Hall (500) also has a [ITAL]big, dark, noisy [EITAL]bar in it, useful for ents.[PARA][BOLD]Cinema: [EBOLD]The film club recently showed Abba - the Movie, and a Woody Allen all-nighter.[PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] (2) There are theatres in the Union and the Bonar Hall (500), which is run as a commercial venture by the University. It's an [ITAL]excellent [EITAL]conference centre and venue with (apart from the theatre and exhibition area) a 180-seat function room and catering facilities.[PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos:[EBOLD] Twice a week, bodies go all a-quiver at the Floorshow (cap 550, ú2)..[PARA][BOLD]Music venues: [EBOLD]The Main Hall, the bars, the Chaplaincy (150) and the Bonar Hall are all used for live sounds, from the Orb to Jools Holland.[PARA][BOLD]Cabaret: [EBOLD]Once a fortnight, the Main Hall becomes the Dead Club, playing host to Jack Dee and the Doug Anthony Allstars.[HDNG]EATING OUT:[EHDNG][PARA]The University's Tower Cafe is open all day. In the Union, open all morning until after lunch and all evening until midnight (sometimes), there're a fast food counter and coffee room (although no sit-down cafeteria). Otherwise, students sometimes eat in the pubs ([ITAL]such as The Pheonix[EITAL]) around the campus. [ITAL]As for fast food and restaurants, here are the [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH] [ITAL]prize winners: Don Quixote (Spanish value, veggie available); Fine Palate (Chinese); Gunga Din and Jaghanic (Indians); The Parlour (daytime cafe near campus); Pegasus (takeaway kebabs, etc till 4am); Queen's Hotel (afternoon tea); Dandilly's (Italian); Russell's (ice-cream parlour and cafe); Le Beauborg (French).
