In addition to the above, [PARA]there are support groups for AIDS/HIV, and ethnic minorities. [PARA]For individual problems, every student has a personal tutor who [PARA]can always refer them to the Welfare Officer at CUSU, the [PARA]University Counselling Service or anyone else who might be able [PARA]to help. The excellent Counselling Service - which sees more and[PARA]more students each year - employs 1 full time and 5 part time [PARA]professionally trained counsellors and a number of volunteers [PARA]and trainees. Incidentally, they recommend that students take a [PARA]year out before coming to Cambridge. Most colleges have their [PARA]own nurses or even doctors and the University operates a Dental [PARA]Service for students and their toothy pegs.[PARA][BOLD]Women:[EBOLD] Most colleges have only started to allow women [PARA]students over the last 2 decades [ITAL]and many are still reeling from [PARA]the shock[EITAL]. [ITAL]As female numbers grow the situation and the [PARA]facilities improve, but the academic staff of many departments [PARA]and colleges are still ominously all male. The prevailing [PARA]chauvinism is that of a previous generation and some women [PARA]end up pedalling on a lower gear just to show they can. The most[PARA]blatant m-c-piggery rears its head in college bars where the tone [PARA]can be frankly oppressive.[EITAL] But, in the face of aggression, [PARA]women have taken steps. There's a Women's Council, [PARA]Women's Executive, Women's Handbook, free rape alarms and[PARA]strong campaigns.[PARA][BOLD]Disabled:[EBOLD] Cambridge was not originally built with wheelchairs in [PARA]mind, although it is blessed or blighted with a lack of hills. [PARA]However, a fair amount of building has been going on over the [PARA]last 20 years and there has been a genuine attempt to make [PARA]these new buildings accessible at least. Bridget's hostel, on [PARA]Tennis Court Road, which has special facilities for people with [PARA]disabilities, offers ground floor accommodation, a care attendant [PARA]and an independent life. Professor Stephen Hawking is a regular[PARA]sight, in his electric chair. For sight-impaired students, large print [PARA]or braille exams papers are available.[HDNG]FINANCE:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] Ave debt per year: cú700 [BULL] Access fund: ú370,000 [BULL] [PARA]Successful applications (1992): 600[ESTAT]
