[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA][BULL] The College is part of University of Cambridge and students are entitled to use its facilities.[EBOLD][PARA][ITAL]The most important thing about Gonville and Caius is to pronounce its name correctly. [EITAL]Gonville's okay ([ITAL]apart from sounding like a Muppet character[EITAL]), but Caius is pronounced 'keys' which is particularly confusing because most people drop the 'Gonville and' bit. Caius is based on 2 sites, 500 yards apart. The main building is at one end of King's Parade and is centred on the [ITAL]fine [EITAL]old renaissance Caius Court, next to Tree Court, the only college court in Cambridge with, er, trees. The other site is Harvey Court, the 1st year accommodation, designed in the 1960s in concrete and grey brick ([ITAL]and the worse for it[EITAL]) and situated on the other side of the river on the Backs (meadow banks). [ITAL]Caius students have a distinctly old school tie, macho raucousness about them, in contrast with a discernible staidness amongst the College authorities.[EITAL][PARA][PARA]3 bars (only 1 open at a time); Thursday night raves; Bateman party room; biennial ball. Intermittent magazines; many drinking/dining clubs[ITAL]. [EITAL] 2 libraries (33,000 books); 20 PCs, 8 Macs; chapel; [ITAL]happy, clappy, candles and sandals [EITAL]Christian brigade. [ITAL]Good [EITAL]sports facilities in College and 1/4 mile away (3 acres). All 1st and 3rd years live in hall, 2nd years in college hostels; [ITAL]'gyp-rooms' (shared kitchens) are inadequate[EITAL]. Nurse; hardship funds, travel, study grants.[HDNG]FAMOUS ALUMNI:[EHDNG][PARA]Harold Abrahams (runner in 'Chariots of Fire'); Mark Bailey (England rugby player); Dr Caius (doctor of medicine); Kenneth Clarke MP (Con); Francis Crick (Nobel prize winning medic); David Frost (broadcaster); William Harvey (who discovered circulation of blood); Stephen Hawking (cosmologist); Sir Nevill Mott (Nobel prize winning physicist); ); Dr Venn (as in 'Venn diagram').
