[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA][BULL] The College is part of University of Cambridge and students [PARA]are entitled to use its facilities.[EBOLD][PARA]About 100 yards from King's Parade, is Cambridge's 2nd oldest [PARA]college. Its buildings are traditional, focussed around the 17th [PARA]century Old Court and spanning both sides of the river (linked by [PARA]Cambridge's oldest bridge) on the Cambridge 'Backs' (the [PARA]college-crusted banks of the River Cam). [ITAL]Old, Clare may be, but [PARA]fogey, never. It's one of the most progressive Cambridge [PARA]colleges with a strong academic and musical tradition, and it's [PARA]getting more radical, too. However, all this enthusiasm and [PARA]academic pressure can make students a bit college-orientated, [PARA]which is fine for them, I suppose, but surely Clare can't be so [PARA]good it offers everything the rest of the world does? Or can it?[EITAL][PARA][PARA]Cellar bar in Old Court (cap 200) is the social core; free pool table,[PARA]jukebox; also MCR bar. 2 libraries (100,000 books); 15 computers;[PARA]CofE chapel used for classical recitals; regular balls; extensive [PARA]gardens used for annual May Ball attended by 1,500 students ([ITAL][PARA]most romantic in Cambridge). [EITAL] Sports fields (4 acres) 11/2 miles [PARA]away;[ITAL] [EITAL]facilities on site are [ITAL]limited[EITAL], but there's wide involvement in [PARA]sport, nevertheless.[ITAL] Strong [EITAL]musical tradition. Students in all [PARA]years are guaranteed rooms either in the College itself or at [PARA]nearby Clare Court. Most students eat in the dining hall (which [PARA]offers a vegetarian option); self-catering provisions limited. Nurse;[PARA]self-defence and assertiveness classes; counselling; hardship [PARA]fund and travel and book grants.[HDNG]FAMOUS ALUMNI:[EHDNG][PARA]Sir David Attenborough (TV naturalist); Chris Kelly (Food and [PARA]Drink); Hugh Latimer (martyr); Peter Lilley MP (Con); Paul Mellon [PARA](philanthropist); Matthew Parris (ex-MP, Times sketch writer); [PARA]Norman Ramsay (Nobel Prize Winner); Siegfried Sassoon [PARA](poet); Cecil Sharp (folk music historian); Richard Stilgoe [PARA](entertainer/lyricist); James Watson (Nobel Prize winner, [PARA]discovered DNA).
