The choices are based in 3 areas: 6 large halls at Stoke Bishop (just under 2 miles north of the University Precinct); 3 halls near the [ITAL]gorgeous [EITAL]gorge in Clifton (2/3 mile west); and student houses in and around the Precinct itself, which are all self-catering [ITAL]and scarce[EITAL]. In all, there are 5 catered halls, 4 self-catering halls (2 of which are blocks of shared flats) and 19 houses for between 9 and 125 students. Nearly 18% of livers in have to share and some corridors in some halls and some student houses are single sex.[PARA][BOLD]Car parking:[EBOLD] The demand for spaces is kept down by requiring drivers to buy a permit, which means that [ITAL]parking is adequate at most, if not all, halls[EITAL] for those who can afford it.[HDNG]EXTERNALLY:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]A3[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Renting: 60%[ESTAT][STAT][BULL] Ave rent: ú40[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Availability:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Finding suitable accommodation in Bristol is almost as easy as finding a haystack on a needle. Early birds catch the homeliest nests and the later foragers can end up in fairly dumpy dives, paying over the odds, but it's better than cardboard. Although local relations are quite good, some areas of Bristol are rough 'n' tough, such as St Paul's and St George's where drug dealers run their trade on the street corners.[EITAL] [ITAL] [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL] recommends a thorough preliminary investigation with the 'granny test' (send an old lady alone down the street in question - if they reach the end, it's inhabitable). Areas worth trying include Bishopston, Cotham, Clifton and Redland. Wherever students lay their hat, they find it hard to park their car.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Housing help:[EBOLD] The University Accommodation Office's 6 staff keep a vacancies register and provide general help and advice in[PARA]home-hunting.
