There are 840 places in halls in Brighton, and others at Falmer and Varley. There are 190 further places in Eastbourne. More than 1/2 the self-catering places are in houses, hotels and flats owned by the University and sublet to students. The University has contracts with several local hotels, guest houses and landladies. [ITAL]Basically, it's a desperate mish-mash attempt to dredge as much accommodation as possible from all sources in the face of a considerable local shortage, [EITAL]but, even if students don't get exactly what they'd like, the University has, as yet, never had to sleep students on gym floors and the like.[PARA][BOLD]Car parking:[EBOLD] Free spaces if students can find them.[HDNG]EXTERNALLY:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]A3[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Ave rent: ú42 [BULL] Renting: 75%[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Availability:[EBOLD] [ITAL]It used to be hell trying to find affordable accommodation. Prices weren't much cheaper than outer London and were more scarce. Things have become easier [EITAL](a number of agencies now deal with students) [ITAL]although prices aren't any cheaper. The most hopeful spots for bedsits and shared houses are London Rd (near station and the best pubs), Lewes Rd/Elm Grove (good for Falmer), Seven Dials (near another station and the town centre) and Kempton (just cos it's nice). Hove is a bit far and Moulsecoomb is a bit rough.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Housing help:[EBOLD] The Student Services organisation allocates the University's spaces and lends a hand in finding places in the private market as do a number of private agencies.
