It has loads of gay pubs and many clubs have notable DJs. The Brighton Festival each May is one of the country's biggest arts and entertainment festivals - an excellent distraction from exams. It is accompanied by the Festival Radio station, which employs a fair few students.[PARA][BOLD]Cinemas:[EBOLD] 3 cinemas including an MGM multiplex and the Duke of York's cinema club.[PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] (4) The Pavilion Theatre offering the short back and sides of fringe and the Theatre Royal with pre-West End runs, summer spectaculars and Xmas pantos.[PARA][BOLD]Pubs:[EBOLD] Expensive but [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: Pig in Paradise (cheaper beers, small club upstairs); Great Eastern (near station, bohemian, bookshelves); King and Queen (huge, noisy, youthful); Cricketer's (plush, good central meeting point); Bulldog Tavern, Zanzibar (gay); Horatio's (student favourite on the end of the pier); Walmer Castle (often live music or even poetry); Geese (Irish).[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos:[EBOLD] Some of Brighton's [ITAL]best[EITAL] clubs are nationally renowned, such as the[ITAL] trendy and cavernous [EITAL]Zap Club with its cabaret nights and gay nights (ú5-7 though, so attracts Sloanes). Among the many other clubs to get hit with include The Escape (ú2-5), tacky times at The Gloucester (ú3) and for cheap chuckles, students frequently frequent the Brighton SU's Basement Club at Grand Parade (ú2).[PARA][BOLD]Cabaret:[EBOLD] For live jazz and the climb-aboard point for some of the top ticklers in cabaret, check out the Concorde or some of the local pubs and clubs. The Theatre is occasionally hired for music or raves as are some Brighton clubs like Paradox.[PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] [ITAL]The Grand Parade site is the best for ents, [EITAL]hogging both the theatre (cap 350) and the Basement. The bar at Falmer features live music on a regular basis. Mostly it's local bands (eg Delicious Monster).[HDNG]EATING OUT:[EHDNG][PARA]Each site has its own refectories. The SU does bar food in all bars and has a pizza bar at Moulsecoomb. Otherwise there are endless local pubs and cafes. At Falmer, students often nip across the tracks to [ULNE]Sussex University[EULNE]. Meanwhile in town, Brighton bursts at the seams with restaurants: [ITAL]a choice a wide as the Bee Gees' lapels[EITAL], including fish and chips and seafood, veggie and wholefood, pizzas and burgers, Indian, Thai, Chinese, Mongolian and of course, traditional British restaurants to every degree of daintiness. [ITAL]It's almost as good and almost as expensive as London.
