[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA]In a hole in the Pennines not far from the Yorkshire Dales, is a [PARA]city that bloomed and boomed during the Industrial Revolution [PARA]because of sheep or, more accurately, wool. Now Bradford is [PARA]famously multicultural with a large Asian population. The streets [PARA]are criss-crosses of Victorian terraced housing, except in the city[PARA]centre, a jigsaw of big civic centres and buildings from the [ITAL]brilliant[PARA][EITAL]National Museum of Photography to the [ITAL]fantastic [EITAL]Alhambra [PARA]Theatre. If the city and its amenities get boring ([ITAL]which won't [PARA]happen within about 43 years of getting here[EITAL]), Bradford is [PARA]between Leeds (see [ULNE]University of Leeds[EULNE]) and Manchester. The [PARA]University is in the thick of it, less than a mile from the city centre [PARA]and mega roundabouts which trap cars in ever repeating circles. [ITAL][PARA]The campus is as compact as a Swiss Army knife and has to [PARA]be to fit in all the added extras[EITAL]. Most of the modern building [PARA]blocks rise into the sky leaving room to park cars in between. [PARA]About 600 students are based 2 miles away in the [ITAL]pleasant [EITAL][PARA]suburbs at the Management Centre at Emm Lane which consists[PARA]of an a former religious training college and 2 modern extensions.[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]Bradford's a small, friendly and utterly unpretentious University - [PARA]having one main self-contained campus helps keep student spirit [PARA]from dissipating into the city which would otherwise swallow it [PARA]with friendliness. Students at Emm Lane are less a part of the [PARA]party. The fun focus is sharply defined on campus, especially [PARA]the bars.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]THE CITY:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][ITAL][STAT][BULL] Population: 449,100 [BULL] London: 180miles [BULL] Leeds: 9miles [PARA]Manchester: 30miles[ESTAT][EITAL][PARA][ITAL]Bradford is one of the cheapest places to live in the whole [PARA]country, but does that mean Bradford students spend less? On [PARA]the contrary, with everything so cheap, most of them end up with[PARA]stonking great overdrafts (see below).[EITAL] When we say [PARA]'everything', we mean[ITAL] everything[EITAL] - Bradford has all the trappings [PARA]of cosmopolitan commerce and culture.[PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]TRAVEL:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Trains:[EBOLD] Bradford Station is just 1/2 a mile from the campus. [PARA]Services to London (3hrs, 1/hr), Birmingham, Edinburgh, Bristol, [PARA]Leeds, etc.[PARA][BOLD]Coaches:[EBOLD] National Express services to, among other places, [PARA]London (ú12, 4:10hrs, 8/day), Manchester (ú3.50, 1hr, 1/hr).[PARA][BOLD]Car:[EBOLD] Just a few minutes off the M62 down the M606, on the A58, [PARA]A658 and A650.[PARA][BOLD]Air:[EBOLD] Leeds and Bradford Airport (61/2 miles away) operates [PARA]flights inland, and to Europe, Ireland and, [ITAL]strangely,[EITAL] Canada.[PARA][BOLD]Hitching:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Not too many lifts - the beginning of the M606 is the [PARA]place to try though.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Local:[EBOLD] Regular bus services at just 18p from the campus to the [PARA]city centre, but everybody walks if it isn't raining. There are 3 [PARA]stations around the city (including neighbouring Shipley) which [PARA]are useful for getting to Leeds (60p).[PARA][BOLD]Taxis:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Not too expensive [EITAL]costing ú2 from the campus to the [PARA]station.
