- Thank you for previewing Sport Accolade's two inning HardBall 5 (tm)
- demonstration. This readme.txt file explains how to get this demo
- version of HB5 up and running on your computer.

- This demo version is freely redistributable provided it remains unmodified.

- INSTALLATION
- ============
- 1. You may play the HardBall 5 demo from either your harddisk (if you
- want faster load times) or directly from the CD.
-
- a) If you want to play from your harddisk:
- i) Create a demo directory at the C:\> prompt by typing
- "mkdir hb5demo" <enter>
- ii) Change directory by typing "cd hb5demo" <enter>
- iii) Insert the demo CD in your CD-ROM drive.
- iv) Copy the hb5 demo files from the demo CD to your hard disk
- by typing "copy d:\hb5demo\*.* ." <enter>. If your CDROM
- drive is not D: then use the drive letter of your CDROM
- drive instead.

- b) If you want to play the demo directory from the CDROM:
- i) Insert the demo CD in your CD-ROM drive.
- ii) Type "d:" <enter> (use the drive letter your CDROM drive is on)
- iii) Type "cd hb5demo" <enter> to go into the HB5 demo directory.

- 2. If you have 7 megs of free RAM, skip to #3. If you have less than
- 7 megs of free RAM, you must run the special VM command listed below
- before HardBall 5 will boot. You must also have an additional 7 megs
- of hard drive space free in addition to space required for the game.
-
- - Type VM at the "C:\hb5demo>" prompt and press <enter>.
- (If playing directly from CD, type "VM C:")
-
- 3. Type "HB5DEMO" at the dos prompt and press <enter>. The Setup screen
- will be displayed.
-
-
- SETUP OPTIONS
- =============
- 1. Adjust joystick - Calibrate your joystick by doing the following:
-
- - Select ADJUST JOYSTICK and press <enter>.
- - Follow the on-screen directions. (If your joystick does not have
- trim-pots, disregard the readings.)
- - If you have a second joystick plugged in, you can calibrate it the
- same way.
- - Press <esc> to cancel calibration.
-
- 2. Sound and Music
-
- Here's how to select the soundcard you want to use:
-
- - Press the tab key to move the highlight to the driver list, then
- press the down arrow key to highlight the desired driver and
- press <enter> to select.
- - Press the right arrow key to select Port, IRQ and DMA settings.
-
- Make sure the settings displayed are correct for your soundcard or
- you will not get any sound or your computer will lock up.
- Depending on the sound card, change settings using one of these
- methods:
-
- - Highlight a setting and press <enter> repeatedly until the desired
- setting is displayed or highlight and press <backspace> and type in
- the new setting.
- - If you don't know your settings, highlight Detect Settings and press
- <enter> or consult your soundcard manual.
-
- NOTE: Using "Detect Settings" is not 100% reliable on all soundcards
- and your computer may lock up.
-
- When soundcard selection and settings are complete, highlight Test and
- press <enter>. A sound effect will be played if your settings are
- correct.
-

- KEYBOARD, JOYSTICK AND MOUSE CONTROLS
- =====================================
- One or two players can play HardBall 5. You can use 1 or 2 joysticks, the
- keyboard, or any combination thereof. If you have a mouse, you can use it
- on all menu screens by moving the cursor to the desired item and clicking
- the left mouse button. Scroll up and down menus by holding down the left
- mouse button and moving the cursor to the bottom or top of the list.

- To choose whether a joystick, keyboard or computer controls a team:
-
- 1. Select "Exhibition Game" from the Main Menu.
- 2. Select "Options" from the pre-game screen.
- 3. Highlight the team you want to control in the Player Control box on the
- right of the screen.
- 4. Press <enter> repeatedly until the game controller you want is shown.
- Keyboard 1 is the cursor keys or the keypad. Keyboard 2 is letters
- A (left), W (up), D (right), X (down), Spacebar (enter), Tab (backspace).
- A joystick(s) selection will be available only if you have a joystick(s)
- plugged in.
- 5. Highlight the opponent and select control in same manner as above.

- MENU SELECTIONS
- ===============
- Use the cursor keys (up,down,left,right arrows) or joystick to highlight a
- menu selection then press <enter> or joystick button #1 to select.
-
- Use the <tab>/joystick button #2 to move between menu lists and Statistical
- Set Buttons.
-

- PLAY CONTROLS
- =============
- These instructions assume you're using the keyboard. If you're using
- a Joystick then <enter> corresponds to button A and <backspace>
- corresponds to button B. <Space> and <Tab> are the buttons for
- keyboard 2.
-
- BATTING
-
- Choose a swing type by pressing the cursor key that corresponds
- to the desired swing type, then press <enter>.
-
- After the pitcher throws the ball, press <enter> to swing the bat.
-
- Press <Esc> to call a timeout.
-
- BASE RUNNING
-
- The runner goes immediately to first base. Make the hit a double by
- pressing the up arrow key. The left arrow key moves the runner to
- third and the down arrow key sends the runner home.
-
- To retreat to a base, hold down the arrow key that corresponds to the
- base you want your runner to return to and press <enter>.
-
- To leadoff or steal - Base runners automatically lead off. You can
- increase their lead off by holding down the arrow key that
- corresponds to the desired base. Hold down the desired arrow key and
- press <backspace> (button #2 for joystick users) when the pitcher
- starts his windup to make the runner steal.
-
- PITCHING
-
- Choose a pitch by pressing the cursor key that corresponds to the
- pitch you want and then press <enter>.
-
- Press and hold down <enter> to start the throw. Use the cursor keys
- to aim the pitch during the windup before the pitcher releases the
- ball. How long you hold down the cursor keys determines how far
- inside/outside, etc. the pitch will be.
-
- To attempt a pickoff, press and hold down the cursor key that
- corresponds to the desired base and press <backspace>. You must
- select your pitch before you can try a pickoff.
-
- FIELDING
-
- After a ball is hit, a yellow circle appears by the feet of the player
- nearest the ball. Use the cursor keys to move the highlighted player
- to the ball. If he is close to a ball, press <backspace> to jump or
- dive. If the ball passes him and another player is closer, press
- <enter> to switch player control.

- Once the fielder has the ball, press an arrow key and press <enter> to
- throw toward a base. First base is the right arrow key, second base
- is the up arrow, third is the left arrow and home is the down arrow.

- VIEWING STATISTICAL SETS
- ========================
- HardBall 5 compiles a wide variety of individual and team statistics
- during League and Exhibition Games. This demo includes the results
- of a season that has been played out in full so you can explore the
- completeness of our stat tracking and the versatility of our Statistics
- Display option.
-
- You can change the set of statistics currently displayed on the
- Team Roster, Scoreboard/Lineup, League Leaders, etc... screens
- by pressing <tab> to highlight the Statistical Set Button (the small
- button with a #1 on it to the right of a stat column heading) and then
- pressing <enter> repeatedly or moving the cursor over the button and
- pressing the left mouse button.

- CUSTOMIZING STATISTICAL DISPLAYS
- ================================
- You can customize four Statistical Display Sets for each menu screen
- that displays stats. To do so, highlight the Statistical Set Button
- and press the <Spacebar> or move the cursor over the button and press
- the right mouse button.

- The Statistics Display Screen allows you to select, sort and view
- by the following:
-
- CATEGORY
- Batting: batter's statistics only
- Pitching: pitcher's statistics only
- Team: team statistics only
- Ratings: player's performance ratings
- Game: individual game statistics
- Historical: 1994 performance statistics for the MLBPA league and statistics
- based on the team year listed in the Legends league.
- Week: the cumulative week's totals for an individual in regular and
- post season play
- Season: the cumulative season-to-date totals for an individual, not
- including post season play
- Lifetime: the career totals from initial installation to date

- SITUATIONAL
- Shows how a player or teams does in home/away games, vsL/vsR, during
- individual months, etc. Only one of these may be active at a time.

- Here's an example of how to customize a Statistical Set:
- 1. Highlight #1 in the Set box then press <enter>.
- 2. Highlight Batting and press <enter>.
- 3. Highlight Season and press <enter>.
- 4. Highlight a choice under Situational and press <enter>.
- 5. Repeatedly press Remove until all stats in the Display column
- are deleted.
- 6. Highlight and select a statistic (a description of that stat appears
- at the bottom of the box) in the Statistics box. Repeat until you
- have added all the stats you want to appear in that set. Note: only
- the statistics shown in the dark gray area under Display will appear
- in that set.
