- Deleted File Analysis Utility[tm] 3.0 (build 83)
- for
- Windows NT[R]
- Windows[R] 2000
- Windows XP
-
- This text file provides information you should know about
- the Deleted File Analysis Utility.
-
-
- PLATFORMS AND OPERATING SYSTEM VERSIONS SUPPORTED
- =================================================
-
- Deleted File Analysis Utility is supported on Intel x86
- platforms (or equivalent) running Windows NT 4.0,
- Windows 2000, or Windows XP.
-
-
- IMPORTANT NOTICE
- ================
-
- Deleted File Analysis Utility is a free utility to find
- files that have been deleted but may be recoverable. In
- order to recover accidentally deleted files and/or protect
- deleted files from overwrite you will need to purchase
- Undelete 3.0 instant file recovery utility (available in
- Server, Workstation and Home User Edition versions)
- from Executive Software, International. More info is
- available at www.undelete.com
-
- Online purchasing information for Undelete is displayed
- when you run the Deleted File Analysis Utility.
-
- Deleted File Analysis Utility Workstation version only shows
- the deleted files on your local hard drive, while Undelete
- Server version allows you to find and recover deleted files
- remotely, on any computer where Undelete is installed.
-
- Undelete Server can be installed on a server or workstation.
-
- Undelete Workstation version can only be installed on a
- workstation.
-
- Once a file is deleted (where Undelete has not yet been
- installed), the chances of fully recovering that file decrease
- considerably when other activity occurs on the same disk
- partition. To improve the possibility of a complete recovery
- of a file that has been accidentally deleted, Executive Software
- recommends the following steps:
-
- 1. Stop all activity on the disk partition where the
- accidentally-deleted file resided. Do not save any files
- that are currently open, since this causes a write operation
- on the disk.
-
- 2. If the computer is on a network, disconnect the network
- cable if possible. This prevents disk activity caused by
- remote users from writing over the file you want to recover.
-
- 3. If Deleted File Analysis Utility is not currently installed
- (it is a very minimal install), do so now and see if you can
- locate the deleted file you want to recover.
-
- 4. To recover a deleted file, run Emergency Undelete, which is
- provided when you purchase Undelete. Consult the help file in
- Undelete.
-
-

- ===================
-
- You must be a member of the Administrators Group to install
- Deleted File Analysis Utility.
-
-
- INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
- ======================
-
- The Deleted File Analysis Utility installation procedure makes
- minimal additions to the system registry. The procedure writes
- a minimum amount of information (less than 8 KB) to the hard
- drive on your computer. This lessens the chances that information
- written to the disk during the installation will overwrite the
- file or files you want to recover, and improves the chances for
- full recovery of accidentally deleted files.
-
- To install Deleted File Analysis Utility, follow these steps
- while logged on to an account that is a member of the
- Administrators Group:
-
- 1. Run the Deleted File Analysis Utility self-extracting
- compressed file that you downloaded.
-
- 2. Extract the installation files to a floppy disk.
-
- 3. The setup program should start automatically. If not,
- run Setup.exe.
-
- 4. When the installation is complete, start the Deleted File
- Analysis Utility by running DelUtil.exe.
